We can afford over $5 million.

$2.75 million now with a 23 man roster.  Add $1.75-$2 million if you drop it to a 21 man roster which many teams run with now and that is $4.5 million.  Add in the $775k-$1 million for the person that the new signing pushes out of the roster... = $5.5ish million room.

We have room for another significant piece at forward or defence.  If we decide to move Garland because Heinen can do that job, we can add basically anyone we want including a big piece like Necas or Trouba.

    Debrusk-Petterson-Hoglander
    Podkolzin-Miller-Boeser
    Joshua-Suter-Heinen
    Sherwood-Blueger-Karlsson
    PDG

    Hughes-Trouba ($2.5-3.0 million retained)
    Soucy-Hronek
    Forbort-Myers
    Desharnier

    or...

    Debrusk-Petterson-Necas
    Podkolzin-Miller-Boeser
    Joshua-Suter-Heinen
    Sherwood-Blueger-Karlsson

    Hughes-Hronek
    Soucy-Myers
    Forbort-Desharnier
    Juulsen

Isnt the main issue with a 21 man roster that you need to use waivers way more in event of injury? Given that a bunch of our depth can now get claimed it feels like we should probably go with a 23 man roster

Noticed the Oilers are now almost $2.5 over the cap. They still kept signing players (Skinner, Arvidsson, Perry, Henrique, etc)

Are the Oilers trying to trade Kane?  I am wondering if the Canucks would be involved, just because of the type of player Kane is. Coached by Tocchet, they might believe Kane could be a beast. I think his past troubles are behind him..?  Assuming that's all good:

    Kane - Miller - Boeser

    DeBrusk - Pettersson - Hoglander

Good to see Suter out of there anyway. It looks like a tougher Top 6.

If not Kane, who else? I don't think Carolina is going to part with Necas or Jarvis.

Nucks put high value on good character guys, Kane is the opposite. Not worth it even at 2m. Dirty player who has a history of alienating his teammates. Fit like a glove in Edmonton with divers, whiners, and buttplugs (Perry).

    good points

the only thing i'm certain off is that we probably won't see Forbot and Desharnais together on the same pair because there's a lack of offense there

PA's been hinting it about splitting up Hughes/Hronek and Tocc mentioned that for next year he wants to work on the D being more active and joining the rush.

I think the top 3 D (Hughes, Hronek, Soucy) will start off by leading their own pair and Desharnais, Forbot, Juulsen, Myers will fit in where they are best suited.

I think Hughes - Desharnais should be tried out for sure. We'll never know if it works unless they give it a shot

    im sure theyll try it

i was combing through old player discussions on him by oilers fans and i must say im appreciating this signing more

they have lots of love for his extreme work ethic, gratitude, stays late to work with coaches, etc.

I think it will be more like:

    Heinen-Miller-Boeser

    Debrusk-Pete-Hoglander

    Joshua-Blueger-Garland

    Sherwood-Suter-Podkolzin

    Aman

    Hughes-Hronek

    Soucy-Desharnais

    Forbort-Myers

    Friedman, Juulsen

I can't imagine they'd have two big, slow defender in Desharnais and Forbort in a pairing together, it's likely they are split. I think when we're desperate in the 3rd they rejoin Soucy-Myers and limit the use of the third pairing.

Terrified of Desharnais playing top-4 minutes for us.

We have some cap room, i have to hope the plan is to shake a top-4 RD loose somewhere

Gives them more depth I guess.  If Arvidsson and Skinner find their games, that's a substantial boost in offence.  Arvidsson could be a 50 to 60 point guy alone... about the same as Kane.

theyre going to miss Kanes snarl, forecheck, puck retrieval, and he was no slouch offensively himself.

Im scratching my head. I don't think the *one* thing Edmonton was missing was more goals. I understand getting more offense from lower down the lineup but why pick up 2 guys whose main contributions are offensive, and on powerplay 1 no less?

McDavid-Drai-Nuge-Hyman-Bouchard are going to be eating the majority of the powerplay time

Feels like they would have been far better off going out and getting a true #1 goaltender who could steal them some games. If they did that, and ran back the rest of the lineup as-is, they'd be the far and away favorites to win the cup next year.

Well I was speaking about his cup winning year. That's the performance that got his team to a cup and not the years prior

Skinner was just one win from winning a cup. If he gets only a little better he could win one for his team.

Plus if there's already conversation that he could represent Canada for the Olympics (guys from Sportsnet 650) it means he's already one of the top Canadian goalies right now.

I dunno. They're leaning super hard into the "outscore our problems" philosophy.

And Skinner may have just been one win away from winning a cup, but he was also 1 goal away from losing in the 2nd round. So it cuts both ways.

Edmonton will do well again next year, but i also think their team defense covered up a bunch of their own defensive problems, and i dont think they'll be so lucky again. Especially given the fact that their D may have to take another step back to get cap compliant.

If Darcy Kuemper can win a cup for his team having average stats, so can Skinner.

Darcy Kuemper in his prime was better than Stu Skinner

Obviously Kuemper has now begun his decline

2021-2022 Colorado also had a far superior D than Edmonton

Makar, Toews, Girard, Johnson, Byram, Manson >>>>>>> Nurse, Ekholm, Bouchard, Ceci, Kulak, Desharnais

Edmonton is much better than they were last year (didn't get worse anywhere and added some great depth wingers and are deep at centre too) when they beat us.

We are definitely different, as we got a better top 6 forward, a better 4th line, and more defensive depth (bottom pairing/7th d-men). However, we also got worse on the 2nd pair (especially for the playoffs, as we lost our most impactful d-man from last year's playoffs), and we lost our elite 3rd line center who was great utility everywhere (PP, PK, faceoffs, defense, and even some offense).

I think we're better than opening night last year, but worse than we were in the playoffs.

They're better than last year if the salary cap doesnt exist

The salary cap exists, they're now way over, and will have to lose either a defenseman or probably Evander Kane.

They need to find 3.5 million dollars in cap space now to be compliant next year, in all likelihood thats Kane.

If i were edmonton, Id take Kane over Arvidsson+Skinner

Can't lie, Edmonton's made some smart moves here.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's a tight, two-horse race for the division between the Canucks and the Oilers this upcoming season.

I thought so at first glance, but hold your horses for a sec

Edmonton is now 2.5 million over the cap with 22/23 roster spots filled

And they've done nothing to address their goaltending

Assuming their RFAs come in close to league minimum, theyll be around 3.5 million over the cap with 23/23 roster spots filled

They have very few choices to get cap compliant

    1. convince E Kane to waive his NMC

    2. Trade Ceci (who tf is going to want that useless bag of trash)

    3. Trade Kulak + run with a 22 man roster

Option 1 means they havent really improved at all. In fact they were probably better with Kane than they will be with Skinner. Kane is a human turd but he also plays hard, forechecks, is a proven playoff performer, and has great hands.

Option 2 or 3 means they end up with one of Stetcher or Broberg in their starting lineup. One injury and their D is the thinnest in the league.

That's where our forwards need to provide outlets.  It's gotta be a team transition game.  The puck moves faster than any player can skate.

one defenseman has to be able to make a good pass or skate it out though, at least to get the puck to a forward

soucy-myers were not great at escaping the zone with control, whether pass or skate

very worried our new bottom pair is in the same boat

im hoping GMPA sits tight and lets the first 20 games or so play out with this lineup and then spend the cap space we have once its clear what we need more of

Forbort only 2 inches shorter and 30 lbs lighter, and Desharnais is huge. 6'7 235. We are bigger than last year overall. Not a big difference without Z to be honest. Good move by Allvin and Co. That contract for Z is not going to age well and we'll see how effective he even is in Boston.

Just one thing to bear in mind

Big Z was pretty good at skating the puck out, and he was the only defenseman in our bottom-4 who had any kind of puck moving ability

    Forbort and Desharnais have none

So I'm hoping we can use whatever remaining cap space we have to get someone like Kylington.

  12. 2 minutes ago, Rick_theRyper said:

Honest answers only how is the skating ability with Desharnais and Forbort? I know they're big and can fight that's definitely the most of what stood out for me when they were playing against us.

Forbort is slow, Desharnais is not fast but hes not slow either.

The reason I dont like Desharnais is the times i saw him get walked (gap control) and a couple of truly egregious turnovers. But if Foote and Gonchar could fix Myers...

well, i'm not sure how management is going to secure a puck moving defenseman for 3.3m or less.

Trade, Trade + retention, and believe it or not there are still some UFA options, and they might end up much more affordable as teams continue to spend all their remaining $

I was a huge fan of how they got Suter on such a bargain by just waiting it out and having money to spend when everyone else had shot their wad

It's a bit underwhelming but big z sadly isn't worth that. His presence will be missed but they never trusted him with top minutes so they weren't going to pay him that.

Quite often you expect some overall regression from a team that overachieved like we did last year. That's the challenge to overcome and these new guys may help build things that were missing last year like depth scoring and powerplays. Who knows. It would nice to get someone else of note (skinner?) but i'd take joshua stepping up and brock/miller keeping pace over a high priced addition. Shocked no offer sheet for silovs.

5mx6 years for a bottom pair defenseman would be as bad of a deal as the 6x6 Myers got

Glad we didn't get it done with Z. He was hilarious to watch, the entertainment value was incredible, but absolutely not worth that kind of money.

Boston fucked up hard locking that much money up in Lindholm and Zadorov. I don't think either player is who they think.
