Is that defense core worse than last year?
No, its probably around the same assuming no Myers regression
Regular season Cole was probably a better overall defender than Forbort, but Forbort is a true PK specialist

Currently Patera is in as our backup at 775k, he'll be in Abbotsford and Silovs will sign a one way deal for at around 800 - 850k, so basically a wash.
I dont think thats right, im seeing 22/23 roster spots filled, with no backup goalie yet. 1m of cap space + 2.5m of poolman LTIR.

I'm sure they are waiting for price on Necas to come down, Necas said he does not want to be in CAR
I would be thrilled if true, but where would we get the cap space for Necas?
Assuming silovs at 1m, and that Hoglander would be part of a deal for Necas, we'd only have about 3m of cap space.

Still think they’re waiting for some bargains.Schultz? POJ?
POJ would be a great pickup imo.
He and Forbort trade spots as our #6 defenseman depending on what kind of team we're up against

This is the only signing so far I'm iffy on. The rest have been quite solid.
Heinen and Sherwood were great moves
Debrusk is a way better fit up front than Lindholm
Bluegar proved hes a very capable 3C with joshua and garland
our forward group is much better today than we were in the playoffs
its the Defense that im not thrilled about

We're not capped out and Hoglander isn't going anywhere. In terms of guys on the team who would be traded, he's about 8th or 9th down that list. Unless a team is willing to put up a 3/4, 23 - 24 year old Dman who's at the same pay rate, trading Hoglander makes less than zero sense. That's not how winning teams are built
yea i misread puckpedia, thought we only had 1m of cap space left, in reality we will have 2.5 after signing silovs
if we moved out a league minimum player that realistically gives us 3.4m of cap space when all is said and done
if we're willing to part with a draft pick, theres always potential for retention. 3.4m can also go a long way later in the summer if theres a good ufa that doesnt have a contract yet
re: hoglander, i dont want to trade him, but its going to be pretty rough everyone their raises next year, might be wise to get ahead of it while his value is so high and use him to bring in another rare commodity like a young puck moving defenseman

The team has money, trading Hoglander would be foolish. With a 22 man roster with one goalie there is 3.5 mil. There could be another 750k if the team wanted to play the season with a 22 man roster. There is money for trades of need be or other moves.
technically 2.5m if silovs gets a 1m deal
but yea i didnt realize poolmans ltir relief wasnt counted yet
we could do something with 2.5m. Maybe suter and a good draft pick for an upgrade at center

We aren't even close to done, we're like 5 hours in to a 3 month process.
There will be other changes.
We're capped out, outside of a Hoglander trade I don't really see how

After today I think it's safe to say that on paper the team is worse defensively but better offensively which I imagine will cancel each other out to some degree in terms of end results.
I really like the teams philosophy going forward of a balanced forward group that forechecks hard, can roll 4 lines, is good in their own zone and dishes out quite a bit of physicality as opposed to being a group that relies on a relatively small group of very high end forwards. That along with a big physical punishing defense core. Whether this gets them better results next year or not remains to be seen but I like the idea behind everything.Im pretty thrilled with the Heinen signing. He slid up to play on the first line with crosby at times and crosby liked having him there.
not a fan of desharnais but im sure foote and gonchar know what theyre doing and see something
the thing that makes me a bit pessimistic is the puck moving on the back end. we were pretty moving the puck whenever QH wasnt on the ice. we definitely didn't address that.

great buy low candidate but plays the left side, no?

Myers was bad getting 1st pair minutes. Not 2nd pair. The whole first half of the season was with Myers getting 2nd pair. To say Soucy isn't a solid 2nd pair is insane. His absence probably cost us the playoff round against the Oilers.
You can have ONE of soucy-Myers playing on the 2nd pair, probably soucy
But if you watched the games, soucy-myers pair got absolutely buried in our own end. They couldn't move the puck up to forwards. They blocked a million shots but they got shelled and exhausted, and by the time their shifts were over, they just had enough to flip the puck out and skate to the bench
Again, i have no problem with them as a shutdown pair in limited situations - like trying to shut down connor mcdavid, but to use them together for 18 minutes a night again would absolutely kill us

Whats the book on Carrier from Nashville - seems to be around the prime age and plays about 18m a game. Guess it always comes down to dollars and term.
he'd be my pick, small but plays way bigger, defensively excellent, good puck mover
but nashville apparently is close to re-signing him according to EF

cannot put Myers back playing 2nd pair minutes
he and soucy were completley unable to move the puck out of their end
theyre fine as a shutdown pair together to weather a storm, but would be insane to play them as a pair for 18 mins a night

Shes beautiful but I still cant imagine her playing hockey.
Maybe 4th line center?

I really wonder how much klingberg would come in at…. Ghost is also still out there I believe.Klingberg is too much of a powerplay specialist now, with big defensive deficiencies, id rather Alexandre Carrier. Small but plays big.

They may Have to separate Hronek and Hughes
If they do that, we still need a top-4 RD, just with a slightly different profile.
We're missing a RD. Hughes cant play with Juulsen.
Forbort-Myers is our 3rd pair

How are our top 6 forwards worse when Lindholm barely played for us (especially in the top 6) and same for Mikheyev?
Last season top 6:
Suter - Miller - Boeser
Mikheyev - Petey - Hoglander
Replace Mik with DeBrusk, how is that not better? Even if you argued Lindholm should've been in the top 6, then DeBrusk replacing him is a wash since Lindholm was terrible for us besides a small playoff sample.
Slot Garland into the top 6 to replace Suter and it's much better.
Our top-6 is unquestionably better than it was last year.
So is our bottom 6
We still have a huge problem on D. We desperately need a puck mover on the 2nd pair.

I don’t know why people are so high on Lindholm. He was literally good in a handful of games for us last year. He was terrible last year in Calgary and not great the year before. We still have Miller/Petey/blugar down the middle. We needed a PF winger more than Lindholm.
Agreed. He played well with Joshua and Garland but i wouldnt say he was light years better than Bluegar in that position. We had the best 3rd line in hockey when it was Bluegar centering Garland and Joshua.
I have no problem with these forward moves. We're much better up front. Debrusk can score. Heinen can score.
We'll have a terrific 4 line attack next year, and guys who can step up and fill in for injuries in a pinch.
Our D on the other hand..
We badly need another puck mover on the right side. Myers shouldn't be expected to play 2nd pair minutes either.

Yeah, so if you take Juulsen and Friedman off, that puts us at 22/23. Add 200k or so to Patera for Silovs, and that puts us right around 3.3m in cap space with Poolman on LTIR
