It really is amazing to see. We all know that Aaron Rome wasn't built in a day but the first phases of this turnaround have been remarkably quick and so impressive.

They're addressing all of the things people complained about in here for years - from forward depth, goaltending, defense, RHD, prospects, coaching, culture, training, preparation, fitness, mindset. They're giving people less and less to complain about. It's funny to see people searching for things to complain and be negative about. The Hronek deal upended a lot of that from the beginning and made us a lot better much quicker.

Also namely, like you say, the alignment with the farm, development, systems, coaching, etc. Their execution has been precise, efficient, and competent in all areas. And there's still work to be done.

And like you mention about our D getting better, with Hronek locked up long term, we can now look ahead to Willander on the blueline along with Hronek and Hughes. This is only going to get better.

Makes sense.  CGY needs cap space to find guys via UFA and at the same time they are bolstering their future.  They're doing a retool the right way.

Since the Tkachuk trade, the Flames have moved out:

    Toffoli

    Lindholm

    Zadorov

    Tanev

    Hanifin

    Markstrom

    In return, the Flames got:

    1st Round Pick

    1st Round Pick

    1st Round Pick

    2nd Round Pick

    3rd Round Pick

    3rd Round Pick

    3rd Round Pick

    3rd Round Pick

    4th Round Pick

    5th Round Pick

    Kuzmenko

    Sharangovich

    Jurmo

    Brzustewicz

    Grushnikov

    Miromanov

    Bahl

All while maintaining a half decent roster to work with.

Let's say they go out and grab a top 6F and a top 4 RHD:  Stephenson?  DeMelo?

    Top 9:

    Huberdeau-Kadri-Kuzmenko

    Pospisil-Stephenson-Zary

    Mangiapane-Backlund-Sharangovich

    Top 4:

    Weegar-Anderson

    Kylington-DeMelo

They're doing a heck of a job tbh

They're not making the playoffs next year but at least they're not icing an embarassing product, all the while accumulating an insane amount of draft capital

i think the arguement posters are making here though is that they envision big Z being able to sustain his playoff play regularly and become a #3 or #3B defenseman.

i don't think anyone is arguing that he's been a #3 historically but, that he can continue to elevate his game especially with this coaching group.

i think that's a fair arguement and if PA/JR feel Zadorov can be a staple on the back-end than i'll support it. But i feel confident PA/JR won't give him 5M+ if they see him as a #4-5 D

i dont think its a fair argument at all, we do this literally every time a player goes on a unique run that theyve never been on before. Its extremely rare that it gets sustained. Especially on the offensive side - look at the goals Zadorov scored, most of them were terrible angle shots that the goalie should have had.

More often than not, players regress to the average of what they've been over a number of years, rarely do they sustain what they did for 2 months. We made this gamble on Mikheyev as just the latest example.

I loved watching big Z in the playoffs, but personally, id rather give the 2m in savings to get a Lindholm-Lite 3C who can give us that strength down the middle.

i'd rather invest in high-end talent and dumpster dive for cheap effective 3rd and 4th lines throughout the season than have an average line up from top to bottom.

    thats not the choice though

Zadorov has been a 3rd pair defenseman for most of his career, and people here want to pay him like a #3 defenseman, and give him a big overpayment for a great playoff run. I think thats silly.

You can put in a guy like Dillon whose unlikely to cost more than 3m/year, who also has been reliably playing top-4 minutes and is mean and nasty like Zadorov.

That leaves you with money to put someone really good in the 3C spot, so we have our depth sorted. The top heavy teams (2 good lines, cheapo bottom 2 lines) dont make it very far, and get beat to shit by teams like Florida that have great players all through their top 9

uh.. they have over 19m in cap right now with LTIR. With mik gone its almost 25 million. Thats more than enough for Zads, guetzel or another winger and a couple more pieces.

youre forgetting we need to ice a roster with 22/23 players

add in the 1m per warm body cost and trust me we run out of room very fast. With Zadorov and Guentzel, you have 9 million with which you need: a 3C, a 3rd line winger, a 2nd pair RD, and a 3rd pair RD

3rd Pair RD-  Myers (2.5m minimum)

    Now you've got 6.5m for a 3C, a 3W, and a 2nd pair RD, its not happening.

    Not as bad...

    Petey-Guentzel = $11.6M and $9.5M

    Miller-Boeser = $8M and $6.65M (probably $7.5Mish for BB next year)

    Total = $36.6M

    Toronto:

    Matthews-Marner = $13.25M and $10.9M

    Tavares-Nylander = $11M and $11.5M

    Total = $46.65M

    About a $10M difference lol

Matthews-Marner is worth at least 3.5-5m more than Petey-Guentzel though, just something to think about

    A fine 4th line player at $1-2 million x 1 year contract.

Heck, if they give us Trouba at 50% retained I would consider taking Goodrows’s entire cap hit.

Bringing in a top four D in trade sure puts some pressure on the Hronek/Zadorov negotiations.  If they want to sign here but are holding out for better deals then this is a message we are prepared to move on.

Leverage and pressure points were something Benning never seemed to get.  It was an always an extra million, and extra year, and extra draft pick thrown in on a trade because he had backed himself into corners without other options.

at least he brought in an elite top-6 forward talent like loui eriksson!

Honestly, at a lower cap hit he'd still probably be a good get for someone, he's just not worth 3.6M to a Rangers team that needs to find some cap space.

Odds are he goes unclaimed and they either buy him out or pay to flip him.

1.5m is the max for a high end 4th liner imo. Hes a very good penalty killer
