  1. https://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/mike-bossy-auction-stanley-cup-rings-htp9sz29 Mike Bossy’s first two Stanley Cup rings set records this past weekend as the most valuable Cup rings ever sold at auction, according to Heritage Auctions, which sold the rings at its Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction. Bossy’s 1980 Islanders championship ring brought $222,000. Then his 1981 ring surpassed it at $228,000. His daughter Josiane recently told Newsday that she decided to sell her half of the memorabilia she inherited from her father, who died of lung cancer in April 2022, but that her sister Tanya opted to keep hers. Tanya has her father’s ’82 and ’83 rings. The next-most-expensive item among the 144 in the Bossy collection was a signed, game-worn Islanders jersey from the 1983-84 season that sold for $49,200. “As much as he was the best dad he could be, when I look at the hockey things, I think it really belongs to the people who love hockey and who love him for the hockey player he was,” Josiane said. “That’s why I thought it would be best to get it to fans or collectors or people that would see the value of it.” The biggest-ticket item in the auction also was hockey-related. The only known sealed case of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee cards, including Wayne Gretzky’s first card as an Edmonton Oiler, sold for $3.72 million. “We knew from the moment we heard this O-Pee-Chee case existed that it would get the attention of hockey card collectors worldwide,” Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of sports auctions, said in a news release. “Those hockey collectors played an integral part in the success of this Winter Platinum Night event with world record results achieved for both the O-Pee-Chee case as well as the Mike Bossy collection.”
  2. Nah, it's probably not. But value and what folks think market value is also happens to be subjective. I reckon 11M would be a discount, others would argue it's market value, others would argue it's an overpayment. My take is that the Leafs threw the Canucks a grenade by handing Nylander 11.5M per, I have a hard time seeing Pettersson getting less than that. Pettersson's camp was probably waiting for the Nylander deal to get done.
  3. Pettersson laughs and says he ain't signing to stay in Edmonton
  4. Probably, and that's fine. I think hockey fans in general often have unrealistic hopes and expectations regarding players taking team friendly deals in general though. Most star players don't take discounts, I don't know how a player being paid market value got spun into being a negative when it's actually the norm.
  5. That depends entirely on a theoretical Kuzmenko return, but it didn't happen so that's an unending list of who could have been acquired And sure, but we wound up moving him anyway, things are easier to look back on in retrospect Thing is, it wasn't retrospect for everyone, I wasn't the only one arguing we should have traded him We got Lindholm out of it, and he's a very good player, I just we'd gone about it differently and acquired blue chip guys
  6. Sounds like a guy who's often wanted to be a top six guy ain't happy when he's not in that position
  7. Hard to say, but it certainly wasn't this season's Kuzmenko He did, which brings us full circle, I reckon we could have done better for him last season and was calling for him to be traded But one circle is enough for me
  8. I didn't see his production as being sustainable, in part because of his shooting percentage I also saw him as more of a benefactor, how many tap ins did he have last season? Turns out I wasn't wrong
  9. Loading up for this season, or the future. Kuzmenko's cap hit vs production would have allowed him to fit on any playoff team, his shooting percentage was unsustainably high, and Bruce bump or not we were in tough to make the playoffs. Could have returned picks, prospects, a young NHL'er, or some combination thereof. We're still extremely thin regarding center prospects for example. He was a sell high option, we could have done very well by trading him when his value was highest.
  10. For real, I was one of the folks saying we should sell him off, we were never going to make the playoffs last season Would have gotten a great return
  11. Dallas, Seattle, Florida, and Carolina jump out to me Maybe Boston or Washington, but I don't like their pieces as much
  12. I explained my reasoning regarding Anaheim earlier I think he'll sign and remain a Canuck
  13. As mentioned earlier, I don't view Anaheim as an organization Pettersson would sign with I reckon he'll want a more competitive landing spot
  14. I agree we will be fine, I just don't view LA as an interested party which is why I didn't list them Dubois should be better, Byfield should be Kopitar's heir apparenr
  15. I doubt Byfield is available, not sure they could fit Pettersson's extension in next season without moving significant cap out either Only way that'd probably work is by giving up Byfield and Dubois, given how Byfield has looked they may be better off standing pat Maybe Zibanejad would waive his NMC, but he's in control of that scenario
  16. I thought about the Kings, but Dubois is the wrinkle Not sure what cap the Rags would move out They're also fronted by Zibanejad and Trocheck has slotted in nicely
  17. It doesn't have to be 12M available though, more than likely we'd be taking cap back. Let's take a look. I could see Nashville being interested, O'Reilly is their 1C and he ain't getting any younger. Hard to say which direction Trotz wants to take the Preds. I don't view them as a likely trade partner, but you never know. Potentially Buffalo, but we'd likely be taking one of Mittlestadt or Cozens+ back. They could fit him, Thompson being on such a palatable deal helps them. But I don't see it as being a likely thing. Columbus could certainly use him, but I don't see Pettersson having any interest in the mess that's been Columbus. Potentially Carolina? Pettersson and Aho would be a nice 1-2 punch. We'd likely be asking for Svechnikov+ though. Winnipeg could use Pettersson, I don't see a Monahan extension as a sure thing and Schiefele will be 31 in March. Doubt Pettersson has any interest in Winnipeg though. Pettersson and Barkov would also be a nice 1-2 punch, he'd likely cost him less due to taxes. Hard to say what Florida does, them keeping all of their current crew seems like a stretch, they're a wildcard. Hard to say what we'd want from them though. Seattle has Beniers, Wennburg is a pending UFA. Walking away from both Eberle and Wennburg would pay for most of Pettersson. We'd be asking for Beneirs or Wright+, but maybe they'd go for it to get a 1C. Maybe Dallas? Someone to go with Hintz? Benn's deal will be up after next season, Pavelski won't play forever. Duchene is having a great year but he's 33 and isn't a long-term option up front. Maybe something around Robertson? Harley and Johnston are appealing pieces. Boston has Coyle and Zacha as their top two centers, and while they've both performed admirably Pettersson would be an upgrade. We'd probably have to take one of them back in any deal, they have trade clauses and Coyle has a NMC, but who knows. Boston has limited trade assets though, probably not an ideal trade partner. Strome has played well for Washington but they need a top six center something fierce. They have the Backstrom LTIR, and his deal is up entirely after next season. Hard to say what we'd want from them though. If Minnesota didn't have another season of 14M+ in dead cap space ahead of them I'd list them, but they do. Tampa could opt to let Stamkos walk and try to trade for Pettersson but it seems extremely unlikely given he's a franchise icon. Cernak and Hagel are interesting pieces. Vegas has Eichel, but never count them out.
  18. I just don't see it, Anaheim would be better off being patient too imo I think plenty of teams could pay Pettersson, in fact I think there's a stronger chance the Canucks would be taking a sizeable amount of cap back (in the form of positive value player/players) to facilitate a Pettersson trade I see Pettersson as wanting to get paid on a playoff team, more than likely he does that here imo
  19. Regarding Anaheim, the thing that immediately jumps out is why would Pettersson sign with a rebuilding Ducks team if he wants to win? Pettersson will get paid wherever he goes, that's not a question, he will. Anaheim offers money and that chance to be relatively anonymous, but it'd take more than Pettersson to turn that Ducks team into a playoff team, let alone a contender. The caveat to any Pettersson trade is that he has to be willing to sign there or the deal is dead before negotiations even begin. The Canucks have limited trade power because of this, they'd have to deal with a team Pettersson would commit long-term to. There'd likely be no shortage of interest in Pettersson if he were available, but one could probably cut the list of potential landing spots down pretty quickly. More than likely Pettersson wants to get paid to play with a competitive group, that ain't Anaheim and probably won't be til their youth develop more. Anaheim will go as far as their youngsters can take them, and I like Anaheim's youth and prospect pool.
