  1. It's gonna be someone But if the idea is to try and chase a cup sooner than later, while Miller is still a force, than signing Pettersson to a medium term deal fits that timeframe anyway We were always going to have to look beyond Pettersson sooner or later, which is why management needs to start using their high picks to start drafting center's again
  2. What is there to strip down? They already shipped out Zadorov and Lindholm, Tanev and Hanifin will be next. Maybe Markstrom, but there's a good chance not. Flames have bandied around the word retool, I've also read the word rebuild. More than likely they'll try to compete, they'll stick to short and medium term deals so as to retain roster flexibility. They'll see guys on shorter deals if they flame out. Weegar, Andersson, you need solid vets around so your young guys aren't getting shelled every night. You need good players on rebuilding/retooling teams for stability, to show younger guys the ropes, to be glue guys. Realistically the list of guys not available on Calgary is probably pretty small, Kuzmenko and Mangiapane are pending UFA's next season. More than likely the guys they keep are Weegar, Andersson, Kadri, and Huberdeau. They'll have Backlund til he retires, maybe Coleman waives his NTC for them at some point. There's really not that much left to sell once Tanev and Hanifin go, unless they ship out Kuzmenko/Mangiapane/Coleman/Sharangovich. And that's only if they conclude they won't be able to retain Sharangovich imo. Flames are in for some pain whether they try to rebuild or retool, that doesn't mean they should at least try to be competitive.
  3. I don't necessarily see a 4-5 year as being the end of the world. Pettersson will be 26 in November, a 5x12M deal would take him through the meat of his prime and give both sides and out. We get his best years without the potential decline, he gets an opportunity to cash in elsewhere, or to possibly re-sign with the Canucks. I view it as win/win. I've argued it in this thread before, I think going forward we'll see more top tier players opting to go the Matthews route, they'll bet on themselves for an overall larger payday across multiple deals instead of taking a single mega deal. Lot of guys will still opt for security, but I think we'll see more of it.
  4. Crosby himself said he's not interested in playing for another NHL franchise just over a week ago, quit dreaming. https://theathletic.com/5286060/2024/02/19/penguins-guentzel-crosby-future-trade-deadline/ Will the Penguins’ decision regarding Guentzel, either before or after the trade deadline, influence Crosby’s decision to recommit to Pittsburgh? “No,” Crosby said. “Obviously, it’s a big decision for both sides. That’s something that’s out of my control. But I don’t think that affects how I view things. “I’m not even thinking about extensions.” One thing that hasn’t changed: Crosby only wants to play for the Penguins his entire career. “Yeah,” he said. “I’ve said that forever. But right now I’m trying to focus on getting into the playoffs.”
  5. As @Miss Korea said, a complete teardown doesn't make sense. Nor is it really feasible given how much cap is tied up in Kadri and Huberdeau. Tanev and Hanifin will be shipped out, but there's a solid chance Markstrom doesn't unless a team blows Calgary's socks off. Why? Because he's insulating Wolf the same way he insulated Demko. Ship out Markstrom and you're thrusting a young tender into a sink or swim scenario which may not be beneficial for the guy they have pegged as their goalie of the future. Calgary doesn't need to attract top tier, sexy UFA's, they just need to bring in guys who can fit into the system Calgary has in place. It may be that they have to be a lower scoring, more defensive oriented club for a while. If you look at the club, albeit one that won't feature Hanifin or Tanev sooner than later, their team stats are solid. 16th in goals for, 12th in shots on goal, their shooting percentage is on the lower end given it's tied for 18th, they're a decent faceoff team given they're ranked 14th. Middle of the road stuff. Their goals allowed ranks 16th, their shots on goal allowed ranks 18th, their PK is 5th which is a strength, and they rank 16th in terms on penalty minutes. All in all, middle of the road stuff for the most part. Their powerplay is one of the worst in the league though, ranking 30th. The good news for Calgary is it shouldn't be tough to improve upon 30th. If their powerplay rises next season and their PK dips a bit they're probably still a relatively average team if they can maintain what they've done this season. The good news is they should get hauls for both Hanifin and Tanev. But yeah, with Kuzmenko and Mangiapane come off the books after next season they'll have some decisions to make. They'll have decisions to make on defense as well, I've argued that they probably don't move Andersson if he can be retain, him, Weegar, and Pachel are the only D they have signed beyond next season. There's no arguing that Calgary is a team in flux, and they'll work to gather prospects and youth, but I don't see why they can't be competitive going forward if their management group makes savvy moves.
  6. Game winner and an assist in his return to Chicago Who else? He's been impressive considering the surgery he had is usually a death knell for careers, point per game
  7. They do need skilled bodies now, but they also need skilled prospects period and the draft is the best place to get em I don't necessarily view a Guentzel trade about helping the Crosby era Pens though, management needs to look beyond him, Letang, and Malkin And me either
  8. Probs, picks take longer Could see them wanting a 1st and a blue chip guy though, they should be looking for quality over quantity
  9. Guentzel should return a 1st and either a top prospect or a combination of pick, player, lesser prospect If they retain 50% they should be able to get a solid return without taking cap they don't want back Pittsburgh knows they need to get younger and will probably lean more towards high picks, blue chip prospects, or high ceiling young NHL'ers
  10. Pittsburgh should be able to do better than that imo, especially if they're retaining 50%
  11. Cinderella runs are rare anyway, I'm not interested in going "all-in" Let em run with what they have, maybe make some depth additions, and just get some playoff experience Just making the playoffs makes the season a success given how frequently we've missed, maybe over the next season or two I'll up my expectations if they show they can be a playoff regular
  12. Probs, I don't see us being willing to pay for him either whereas Vegas probably does to try and repeat Which is fine, I'm not interested in us giving up more top tier assets
  13. I wish Kucherov would slow down as I'm rooting for MacKinnon, but there's no denying he's having a helluva season He's singlehandedly made the Lightning a potential playoff team
  14. https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2852626/report-golden-knights-canucks-among-several-teams-eyeing-guentzel A deep group of playoff contenders have Pittsburgh Penguins star Jake Guentzel on their radars leading up to the trade deadline. The Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers are among the teams that have expressed interest in the pending unrestricted free agent, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Guentzel would be arguably the biggest name available for this year's trade season, but the Penguins haven't made it clear if he's on the block. General manager Kyle Dubas is reportedly listening to trade offers for all non-core players as Pittsburgh fights for a playoff spot. The club is nine points back of both a wild-card and divisional seed with 28 games remaining. Dubas shut down rumors involving Guentzel in January, saying all trade talk was "pure speculation." Guentzel was sidelined for up to four weeks on Feb. 15 with an upper-body injury, halting a terrific season in which he's racked up 52 points in 50 games on Pittsburgh's top line. The 29-year-old is a two-time 40-goal scorer and has 58 points in 58 career playoff contests to go with a Stanley Cup in 2017. He currently carries a $6-million cap hit and is expected to land a notable raise on his next deal. The trade deadline is March 8.
  15. I get that, Marky's the only bubble guy imo If they keep him it'll be precisely because they don't want to ruin Wolf
  16. They could definitely use a goalie, the problem is Korpisalo has 4x4m remaining May be able to swap him for Elvis or Campbell, his deal is a season longer though, other than that I dunno It may be easier to tweak their defense and bottom six, hence their supposed interest in Tanev, although that may have dissipated given the trade price They'd probs go after him via UFA though Ottawa can score, they just need to address the other side of the ice somehow, a coaching swap may help with that, Martin is a stopgap
  17. I don't disagree, but there's a good chance he wins a Norris this season and that'll only drive up the price Interestingly enough Hughes and Makar will be due for extensions at the same time, watch em both get 12M+ Pettersson, Hughes, my take is you're better off paying market value for your stars and trying to find deals for your bottom six as Allvin appears to have done The cost of success is having to pay guys, but also having to replace guys as cap forces turnover Pettersson likely gets signed, but I wouldn't expect a discount from him
  18. There's a solid chance Hughes actually ends up making more than Pettersson by the time his deal is up for renewal
  19. Maybe, but like him or not he does hear things and if teams are hearing that they're not even interested in listening on him than it's worth sharing
  20. If anything this may push Calgary further towards looking at a retool, they're playing competitive hockey May be a mushy middle team, but they'll still have to sell Fortunately trading both Hanifin and Tanev would probably be enough to see them slide, I'm not sure they're set either way on Marky, depends on what teams offer imo
  21. Wild have been hot of late, if Ek is hurt that'd be a big loss as he's been huge for them
