  1. Jersey was smart, they locked him in long-term before he blew up, Jack has the best value contract in the league right now They got him signed Nov. 30, 2021, which was the season he wound up putting up 56 points in 49 games They bet on him blowing up and he blew up offensively in a spectacular way the following season Jack will probably have the best deal in the NHL until he's up for a new one That's more about Jersey taking a calculated gamble and Jack going for the money than Jack being willing to take less This was the reception at the time https://forum.canucks.com/topic/399334-signing-devils-re-sign-jack-hughes/
  2. Sometimes players leave money on the table, but more than likely it's not a whole lot. I don't see why folks would expect players to take less than close to max, most people wouldn't if they were in that scenario. Even folks working blue and white collar jobs are going to take the best offers they can get, athletes typically do the same but on an entirely different scale.
  3. Like, what are they gonna do.. not pay him? That's ridiculous, he's the best D we've ever had and will get paid as such. Quinn also watched Jack get locked in early, and lose out on millions in the process, he's gonna get his bag. Quinn sat out once, you're right, people are quick to forget. Why wouldn't he play hardball again? Like Pettersson, he'll likely have the Canucks by the balls. Dahlin, in 2023, just signed for 11M per, Hughes still has three more years on his deal. Cap is going up 4.2M in the off season, are folks expecting him to take 11M after another three off seasons of cap increases? Folks should thank their lucky stars we actually have top tier talents who've performed well enough to command the big dollars. We're really not that far from our own decade of darkness, all one has to do is go back 3-8 years and look at the Canucks rosters to see it could be a helluva lot worse.
  4. It's silly, folks love having premier talents but fuss about top of the league talents getting top of the league dollars. If anything, factoring how the cap will rise over the remainder of Hughes's deal, he'll probably end up making more than Pettersson.
  5. Let's not ignore context. Miller signed under market value, absolutely, but Hughes didn't. Hughes signed his current deal on Oct. 1, 2021, before going on to smash his career high of 53 points. Hughes got a 7.8M extension for what he'd done at the time. Over the course of this contract he's put up 68, 76, and currently 36 points in 26. You don't think he's also going to cash in once this current deal is up? Folks are fussing a lot about Pettersson right now, I can't wait to see how they fuss once it's time to pay the piper with Hughes.
  6. Leafs would have to fumble this pretty bad for it not to happen imo, it was reported that they were actually trying to acquire both Tanev and Zadorov but that a deal fell apart because the Leafs and Flames couldn't agree on what'd it cost Toronto for Calgary to retain up to 50% on each player, on top of what the initial acquisition costs Could easily see the Flames retaining 400k or more https://flamesnation.ca/news/friedman-disagreement-on-salary-retention-prevented-toronto-from-acquiring-chris-tanev-and-nikita-zadorov-from-the-flames
  7. Re-sign Tyler Myers 2x2-2.5M
  8. Plus, dude doesn't need the money, more than likely he'd come closer to league minimum at this point if he can catch on with an NHL team Phil just wants to play
  9. Ottawa's also a .500 team with the least amount of games played in the league at 20, they still have room to turn their season around, particularly if they can get Chabot back sooner than later
  10. Ottawa's 6th in goals scored, their biggest issue is their PK and their goals allowed, removing one of their best locked in D isn't going to help shore up their weaknesses
  11. Yeah, but Ottawa doesn't need Pettersson when they have not only Norris, but a legit top line stud in Stutzle..
  12. Hey, hey, hey.. some of us have been serious about Phil the Thrill all along..
  13. More than likely he stays, agreed, but it depends on who they look to trade with. Cole plus a pick of prospect to a team looking to add to their foundation while remaining competitive could work, there are a few teams like that out East. Philly being a good example, Washington being another one. Such a move wouldn't necessarily have to bring back a D, just more than likely a player with a similar cap hit. Canucks could so something around Cole+ for Laughton for example, their cap hits are identical. It really depends on who they want to trade with and what they want to acquire. A useful pending UFA who could be utilized or flipped again by a team like Philly would probably be more palatable than a larger cap hit with term in Garland for example.
  14. More like.. Teams in higher tax markets: Money? Fuck.
  15. It's also a different scenario, he has three cup wings and absolutely no need to prove himself to Canadian media any further
  16. It's ugly but I don't see any reason why the NHL would stop putting the screws to other teams It's not just Canadian teams these markets have advantages over, but other American teams as well It'd probably also be a huge headache given each state and province has their own tax stuff, don't even know how they'd go about equalizing it all legally
  17. There isn't one, why would the NHL remove the advantage of non-traditional markets that also happen to be great revenue sources? Why do you think there are rumours about the NHL going back to Atlanta for the third time? Or why there's talk of a second team in Texas? Untapped market revenue. The NHL's probably thrilled that it's helped markets like Dallas, Vegas, and Tampa develop.
  18. It'll never happen, NHL is likely far too entrenched and it's the devil owners know, Canadian owners will simply take their lumps alongside their profits He's the guy I'd look to be moving, him and Boeser are up for renewal the same year and I know who I'd be keeping It's a huge competitive advantage, Tampa arguably doesn't fit those cup winning teams together without it Florida probably doesn't have their modern renaissance without it Vegas doesn't fit all the pieces the way they do without it Who wouldn't wanna go somewhere you're not going to be recognized on the street and where you'd earn more money? Millionaire athlete in Florida or closer to Cali, sells itself
  19. If Vegas were to acquire and pay Pettersson 10M he'd only pay $3,660,332 If the Canucks were to pay Pettersson 10M he'd pay $5,302,932 in tax The Canucks have to pay more in terms of dollars and cap space for Pettersson to get the same dollar value That's a difference of $1,642,600 per season If the Canucks had somehow acquired Tkachuk and given him 9.5M instead of Florida he'd pay $5,035,432 a year in tax Instead, he pays $3,475,332 a year in tax, a difference of $1,560,100 a season Play around with it, the Canucks aren't going to get the favourable contracts tax free states will https://gavingroup.ca/nhl-tax-calculator/
  20. Vegas is an anomaly as an expansion team who stepped into the league and began to try and contend pretty much immediately, they benefitted greatly from beginning with a blank slate and from a favourable expansion draft. Vegas also has favourable tax bits if I'm not mistaken. Easier to convince guys to take less in tax-friendly states, Kucherov making 9.5M is another good example of this, so is point at 9.5M. Hell, Stamkos signing his last deal at 8.5M is too. Florida's getting the same deal, Tkachuk at 9.5M and Barkov at 10M. Canucks don't get those kinds of breaks, they'll have to pay the actual dollars up front. They've done a better job drafting of late at least, but yeah.. drafting and development have been an issue for ages, at least up until recently.
  21. Cap is about to jump 4.2M and folks seriously think Pettersson is gonna take 10M on a shorter-term deal? Come on. Cap increases just lead to players getting big contracts, what players ask for and command rises alongside the cap. Canucks are just going to have to fill out their bottom six and bottom pairing on the cheap.
