This season? Probably not. In general? Maybe not. But it's easier to acquire top six wingers than it is to acquire top 4RD. Maybe not, but gotta give to get and I view both Boeser and Kuzmenko as being positive value. May need to be a larger trade but I think we could swap a winger for a top 4D and then poke around UFA for a forward. Or try to promote from within. Thing about UFA RD, or top 4D in general, is they're always in demand. Lot of teams go after D via UFA because all it costs them is cap space and term. Trading for a D on the other hand, that guarantees we get one whereas bidding on a player in UFA could still result in them choosing to go elsewhere. Hopefully nothing in regards to our 1st. I think Garland stays at this point, Beau maybe gets dumped or walks via UFA. I could see Myers signing an extension at a smaller cap hit. Not really sold on Bear but maybe they find room. Don't see him as more than a 5-6D though. Maybe Pesce isn't, I'm not hellbent on it being him, but I am open to moving a top six forward to bolster our D in general.

Agreed, Nucks need reps and they need consistent reps I wouldn't even talk about 19-20, we went on to miss three seasons in a row, and they'd missed the previous four seasons prior to 19-20 They need more experience, sustained experience They're off to a good start this season so hopefully it's the beginning of them getting some Canucks still have lots to prove, it's going to take time and some successful seasons for them to shift the narrative

Most teams who've won the cup the past decade have needed to fall short first. Vegas did repeatedly, as did Colorado. Tampa too. St. Louis, Washington, and Pittsburgh were all playoff regulars before breaking through. The Kings went out in the quarterfinals a couple years in a row before going on their first cup run. Chicago is the closest to coming out of nowhere, going out in the playoffs once before their first cup run, but they made the conference final the season before. Most cup winners don't come out of nowhere, they're teams who are in the playoff mix for a while. I refuse to take any contention talk seriously when it comes to the Canucks until they show they can be playoff regulars.

Even so, if we're looking to upgrade our D it's easier to move out a contract with positive value in a hockey trade. We're also more likely to get a top 4D back for either Boeser of Kuzmenko. I'd rather trade positive value than pay to dump neutral or negative value.

They certainly look deep, absolutely. Your argument is a solid one. Carolina has lots of cap question marks coming too. Necas is due for a raise as an RFA, Teravainen likely will be too, pending UFA. Jarvis is another RFA who'll need a raise. Pesce and Skjei are both pending UFA's. Noesen will be too, but he's more likely to come back down to earth imo. Not sure they can afford to keep them all. It does create another problem by hurting our forward depth, absolutely. But it's easier to move a contract with positive value than to move a Garland or Beauvillier imo.

I'd rather do something like this than overpay for one of Calgary's D. Pesce is also a better option than Peeke out of CBJ.

Not a reaction proposal, I was bandying this about yesterday afternoon in the Beauvillier thread. To Vancouver Brett Pesce, whose cap hit is a hair over 4M. To Carolina Andrei Kuzmenko, who carries a 5.5M cap hit. The guts of this proposal Kuzmenko scored almost 40 goals last season and has a 5.5M cap hit, he hasn't been scoring like that this season but his production is recent enough that it could still sway teams to acquire him. I'm not entirely sold on the Canucks being a team that should be going all-in on this season, I think it's too early. But it's not too early to be looking towards next season by addressing what's probably our most obvious weakness, our D. His shooting percentage was bound to dip but he should probably be scoring more than he has thus far. I think he's an excellent trade chip that several teams could fit in. I'm generally not a fan of acquiring players in their late 20's and I'm still not entirely sold on him being the right fit, but a trade that could happen could be something alongside Kuzmenko for pending UFA Pesce. Carolina currently has the cap space to take on Kuzmenko's entire cap hit. Why do they do this? Well, they're an average scoring team despite their 7th ranked powerplay. They're 16th in goals scored. (edit: powerplay is 9th after last night, goals for is tied for 11th, so a bit above average now). A caveat to this is they've also been an uncharacteristically middling team defensively, but it could be they'd rather get something for Pesce. Kuzmenko would be an infusion of offense, he's capable of scoring goals even if he hasn't been, and he's still be productive having put up 14 points in 19 games thus far. That'd have him tied for third on Carolina's roster as of today. Any such deal would likely require an extension from Pesce but then you have a longer-term outlook of Hughes, Hronek, and Pesce with all other D on shorter term deals. If they want Hronek with Hughes they could certainly do worse. What are the caveats? Well, Kuzmenko has a modified NTC, it's a 12-team NTC. Hard to imagine Carolina would be on that list though considering they've widely been viewed as a contender the past couple seasons. They also have their own Russian in Svechnikov. Pesce also has a a modified NTC, it's a 15-team NTC. But considering we've had a better start it's possible he may be interested in coming here if we offer him term and dollars that he likes. Needless to say, either player being unwilling to go to the other team sinks this proposal but I think there's a chance both players would be receptive. Carolina may not be prepared to trade Pesce given they've been middling defensively, there's also a chance both teams come to terms and sign an extension. Carolina could view Pesce as their own rental, but I'm inclined to believe they'd rather not let him walk for nothing if they can get positive value for him. Kuzmenko is a top six winger at a reasonable cap hit and his term isn't long, gives them an injection of offense as well as cap flex going forward. Pesce may not be interested in being a Canuck, we don't do this deal without an extension in place. Our scoring has taken a hit of late, and our secondary scoring is questionable, moving Kuzmenko may not help that. I'd argue that improved D could mitigate a loss of offense though. Moving Kuzmenko would also give a player like Hoglander or Garland a chance to step up. At the end of the day it's easier to find top six wingers than top 4RD. We might have to add a bit, Carolina might ask for more than just Kuzmenko.

Even if he doesn't extend with the Bolts I'd be a bit surprised if he came west tbh I think more than likely they find a way to get it done in Tampa, he's still very productive and there's the legacy aspect for both sides

Alf, no team is going to trade a 23yo former 1OA RD the season after he puts up 73 points in 78 games as a 1D, it's not gonna happen 16 points in 19 games thus far Buffalo needs to address it's D, tending, and probably it's bottom 6, but I don't see a scenario where Dahlin isn't part of the solution going forward Not having Thompson available has been a big blow He's a franchise caliber D

Big fan of Hughes but I do believe Makar is better, it's a fun rivalry though even if it is mostly fan and media driven. Lot of high end young D in the league right now including Makar, Hughes, Heiskanen, Fox, Dahlin, Seider, ect. Folks should just be thankful we have a top 4 young D (argue whatever you like, but it's Makar, Hughes, Fox, and Heiskanen imo, not necessarily in that order). Things would be a lot different without him being our engine on the back end.
