  1. If the Canucks can get him on 12x5 at this point they should take it and run, if he wins any hardware this season his ask likely only goes up. He's a top 10 NHL forward, there's no way he's not going to be paid like one.
  2. Matthews just signed a four year extension, I wouldn't be shocked to see Pettersson take less than max term. It'd be a gamble, sure, but one that would be more likely to pay off than not. I think it's a bit extreme to assume it's either one year or eight, I think middle of the road term is very much possible. Say he signs a four year extension and falls rom 100 points to say.. 80-90ish, he'd likely at least make what he'd made on his expiring deal, if not more, because of the rising cap. If he continues to produce he gets a sizeable raise and likely a longer deal at closer to 29. Locking in long-term negatively impacts Pettersson's ability to cash in on a rising cap. The fact that he went into this season without an extension was a risk, there was never any guarantee he'd replicate last season but now he's well on his way to doing so. Pettersson has already demonstrated a willingness to bet on himself, I don't see why he wouldn't do it again with a 4-5 year deal. He's going to get paid regardless.
  3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-67340621 A coroner has called for neck guards in ice hockey to be compulsory following the death of a player whose neck was cut during a match. Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson suffered the injury from a skate worn by Sheffield Steelers player Matt Petgrave on 28 October. Coroner Tanyka Rawden has written a prevention of future deaths report. The Sheffield coroner said she was concerned deaths may occur in the future if neck guards were not worn. The incident has been described as a "freak accident" by the Panthers. The UK's top ice hockey division - the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) - announced last week it would not make the use of neck guards mandatory but would "strongly encourage" players and officials to wear them after Johnson's death. While governing body the English Ice Hockey Association previously said neck guards would be mandatory from 2024 onwards, that decision does not impact the EIHL, which is not under its control. In the prevention of future deaths report, she said: "In my opinion there is a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken. In the circumstances it is my statutory duty to report to you." She said she was concerned that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) recommended neck guards or protectors to be worn, but there was no requirement for ice hockey players over the age of 18 to wear equipment designed to protect the neck. The coroner added: "In due course the inquest will consider whether the use of a neck guard or protector could have prevented Mr Johnson's death. "At this stage in my investigation however, I am sufficiently concerned that deaths may occur in the future if neck guards or protectors are not worn. "In my opinion action should be taken to prevent future deaths and I believe you have the power to take such action." The report has been sent to Ice Hockey UK and English Ice Hockey Association Limited, which have 56 days to respond. The inquest was opened and adjourned on Friday. On Saturday, fans and mourners came together at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham to pay tribute to Johnson. Every Panthers games since Johnson died has been postponed, and the club has announced two games this weekend - on 11 and 12 November - will also be rescheduled. The EIHL and the Nottingham Panthers said in a joint statement: "The players and staff of the Nottingham Panthers are still coming to terms with what happened just over a week ago." The Panthers added the club "would like to thank fans for their support at such a difficult time". On Monday, a celebration of life event took place in his home town of Hibbing, Minnesota. Omar Pacha, chief executive of The Panthers, spoke at the event and described Johnson as the "ultimate professional". He said: "I'd often bump into Adam at the rink or at a game and every time I'd see him I would check 'How's everything Adam'. "The response was always the same, 'All good Omar. Great group of guys and I'm really enjoying it here' and a big smile. "And I will never, ever forget two words he would always finish every conversation with everyone at the area - 'Thank you'. "Always humble, always polite, always grateful, that was our number 47."
  4. From January 1, 2024, players must wear cut-resistant neck protection / the rule book will be adjusted accordingly In the German Ice Hockey League (PENNY DEL), all players must wear cut-proof neck protection from January 1, 2024. This is the unanimous result of the meeting of the sporting directors of all 14 clubs in agreement with the players' association (SVE) on November 6, 2023. The PENNY DEL rule book and guidelines will be adjusted accordingly. The suppliers active in the league have promised to deliver the products on time. In addition, the PENNY DEL will also promptly provide its referees with appropriate protectors. Gernot Tripcke, Managing Director of PENNY DEL, says: “Adam Johnson's tragic accident has deeply touched the entire ice hockey world. In order to ensure optimized protection, after in-depth discussions with clubs, players and suppliers, we wanted to take action as quickly and bindingly as possible.” Florian Stenner, spokesman for the SVE players' association: “We as SVE support the unanimous decision of the PENNY DEL. In advance of the consultations, we obtained an opinion from players' circles and this showed that neck protection is important to the players. The fact that many players are already wearing appropriate protection underlines this once again.” https://www.haie.de/news/penny-del-fuehrt-halsschutz-verpflichtend-ein/
  5. Particularly given EP's price will likely continue to rise if he has what's looking like another 100 point season. If he wins any hardware that could push it higher as well. Not interested in rentals or committing to large cap until we sort things out in-house.
  6. I think folks have been spoiled in part by having players like Boeser, Pettersson, and Hughes step in rather seamlessly. I'd have thought Podz would have shifted some of that thinking, maybe it has. Podz was a top 10 pick, not all top 10 picks are going to step in and be impact players off the hop but forwards are more likely to be than D. Willander was drafted 11OA and is a D, more than likely he'll need to stew imo. Should be a very good player down the line but we shouldn't be rushing him because of current NHL roster expectations. Lekkerimaki will likely need to stew too, that's fine. I'd rather prospects need more development time than our rushing them. Management needs to keep adding to our prospect pool, the best way to acquire young top 4D and top 6 forwards is to draft them. I'm hoping we don't trade our 1st, I'd rather us use it at the draft.
  7. Realistically, yeah, they're probably not. Anyone we want that's on the Flames roster will likely have to be added via UFA. I don't believe we can afford to outbid teams at this point either, we should be balancing trying to compete with restocking the cupboards. If we make further trades this season I reckon they'll be more along the lines of cap out/cap in hockey trades. Tanev may not be prime Tanev, but I think he'd be an effective placeholder for a while yet. All he needs to do is make us better in our own end and on the PK, I reckon he could still do that. Others have mentioned Zadorov because of his size, but I dunno.
  8. Tanev is probably the most affordable of the Flames D if the Canucks really want to add Zadorov would be more appealing as a UFA Can't afford Hanifin, don't believe Andersson is on the table but likely couldn't afford him either
  9. Probs the most likely approach, this management group seems more intent on developing prospects as demonstrated by their sending both Podz and Hoglander to Abbotsford and different points It was always going to take time to turn the D around though, the Hronek trade plus other offseason additions has been part of the process of doing so Management should be inquiring about everyone, but like I've said to others I don't think Andersson is one of the Flames players for sale Hanifin, Taven, Zadorov, these are likely the Flames D who are Andersson is one of two D the Flames have signed beyond this season, they need to ice a team Realistically, if he is available I don't think we can afford him anyway as there are likely several other teams out there who'd like to upgrade their D as well I think it's a bit too early to be pushing picks and prospects in as chips, and those are likely what Calgary would want Willander could very well be part of the ask Management should be looking at hockey trades involving Garland or Beauvillier or waiting til summer imo, UFA's only cost money and if we make the playoffs we probably look more appealing than we did last offseason
  10. Philly does, but I agree that the use of orange is rather unique, which is why I'd be chill with the Ducks retaining the colour orange on their third jerseys. But I do prefer the purple, no bones about it. But why not use two awesome colour schemes?
  11. I'd see Norris as best overall But awards for defensive and offensive metrics are worth consideration Hell, make an assist trophy exclusively for D, maybe a goals trophy too I don't see why forwards should get all the fun
  12. I still believe the NHL would be better off having 2-3 different trophies for D. Even goaltenders get two.
  13. He got the Holtby treatment, or the treatment most of our backups have gotten over the past decade or so. I'd say was better than Holtby, but Holtby rarely seemed to get goal support either. My take over the past several years is that the Canucks simply haven't played well for backups, although one can argue they haven't played very well most of the time in general when considering our record. Marky propped up a mediocre Canucks team for a little while, Demko did the same the season before last.
  14. Gotta think it's probably medical retirement for him, one more season remaining on his contract. Shame, Backstrom has been a premier player for years, one of the best at dishing the puck.
  15. It's a good point, because I think offense sways the Selke less than it does the Norris. But yeah, dunno how I forgot to mention Marner. Hagel has been very good for Tampa.
  16. Aye, Flames would be dumb not to retain, it's not as if ownership couldn't afford to pay for retainment on expiring contracts. I think you're right though, if the Canucks are interested in Tanev or Zadorov they're probably better off inquiring in July. But I'm also bullish on not moving out high picks. I'd rather see us use our first rounder for the third year in a row.
  17. If Pettersson can top 100 points, and there's a good chance he does while having even respectable defensive metrics I think he'd have a shot. Selke race is really going to be interesting. Barkov should be in the mix, Kopitar should be too. O'Reilly is off to a good start in Nashville. Maybe Hichier if he can turn it around. Stone out of Vegas. With Bergeron out of the picture it's finally up for grabs again.
  18. Almost certainly, particularly if the Flames are willing to retain and they likely will be if they're out of it. Which seems likely. Getting any of Hanifin, Lindhom, Zadorov, or Tanev at 50% would be huge for any team with cup aspirations. But it'd cost a lot. Four pending very interesting UFA's, Flames could retain on three of them and they'd be smart to because I'll be surprised if any of the aforementioned players are Flames next season.
  19. Hughes could very be in the mix, but it's very early. Other top in D like Makar, Heiskanen, and so on will have their big games as well. Very impressive start by Hughes though, no question. I think the interesting one is the Art Ross, McDavid hasn't been his typical self which opens up the possibility that someone else may have a chance. Although he could roar back with a dominant stretch, season is still young. Pettersson could have a chance at the Ted Lindsay and Lady Byng, I'm not sure who I'd peg for Hart though. Lot of season left for that race to develop. Pettersson should also be in the mix for a Selke. He could be in the mix for a lot of hardware, which will only drive up his next contract. Vezina is a weird one, but if Demko can keep it up he'll have a shot. Adin Hill is backstopping a currently dominant looking Vegas squad, he could also be in the mix. Otter is off to a good start in Dallas. Talbot is doing really well in LA. Georgiev in Colorado. All the tenders on the top western teams should have a shot imo. Shesterkin has won a Vezina and the Rags lead their division, both Ullmark and Swayman have sparkling stats. Can't count out Sorokin considering how much the Isles rely on him. It's a wide net of tenders but Demko is certainly one of them. Not sure about Tocchet, hard to bet against Bruce Cassidy at this point in the season. No cup hangover for Vegas. Jim Montgomery too considering who the Bruins lost during the offseason.
