  1. Similar term (25/26 expiration) and money (Garland having a higher cap hit by a few hundred thousand).

While Garland is the more versatile and offensively gifted player, Marchment is far tougher and would be considered a modern day enforcer (i.e. a good fighter but can still play the game reasonably well).

To be perfectly honest, I see no reason why Dallas would make this move, but what can I say, I'm a biased fuck and have nothing better to do right now than make shitty trade ideas on a message board.

    Anyways, your thoughts?

Vancouver Canucks could turn to Devils for defense help

The Vancouver Canucks still haven’t managed to trade veteran winger Conor Garland, and according to Rick Dhaliwal, the team is aggressively working the phones to reward their players. Ideally, the Canucks will add more help on the right side of their blueline, and the New Jersey Devils might be willing to ship out Colin Miller when healthy.

The Devils acquired Miller for a fifth-round pick back on July 1, and since then, he’s struggled in preseason, held out of their lineup for the first few games, and now finds himself on injured reserve. With Simon Nemec waiting in the wings, the Devils would probably be better off moving Miller if they can.

The Canucks, meanwhile, can help New Jersey out with their forward depth in the form of Garland. Dawson Mercer has been ice-cold this year, and Alexander Holtz still hasn’t managed to break free of Lindy Ruff’s doghouse. Garland is at least an experienced player and can help fill the void of the departed Tomas Tatar.

Miller has a cap hit of only $1.85 million, so the Canucks will have to retain some Garland money if they want any chance at a potential deal with the Devils. In addition, the 31-year-old is in the last year of his two-year, $3.7 million contract, so he’ll be a rental. In terms of value, there’s not a lot in it for the Devils, but they’d probably have something rather than nothing. Miller, struggles notwithstanding, is probably an upgrade over both Tyler Myers and Mark Friedman.

Neither the Devils nor the Canucks are afraid to engage in trade talks and mix it up, as evidenced by their two big moves near the trade deadline last season. There’s been no rumors linking the two teams together recently, but they did combine for a Curtis Lazar trade last year. We’ll have to see if Tom Fitzgerald or Patrik Allvin approach one another once again.

We're just better off signing Ethan Bear for free rather than going after Colin Miller.

Miller won't do much of anything for us in terms of moving the needle.

He's not a "defensive defenseman" and he's not the type of guy that you can play with Hughes (i.e. being good enough to the point where you could move Hronek down to anchor a 2nd pairing).

    Hard pass on Colin Miller.

The result is that Palestinians are born to hate anything Israeli. It was sadly inevitable.

  4. @Elias Pettersson - I like where your heart is at but I'm just not sure if I'm comfortable in moving any more 1st and/or prospects.

Jim Benning bled a LOT of picks and prospects during his tenure here (some of it justified......other times, probably not), but kudos to Alvin for adding some more 'cookies to the cupboards' so to speak.  Raty, Podkolzin, Lekkerimaki, Hirose, Silovs, etc., are all cooking down there and so let's continue to build on that.  Add our 2024 1st to that cupboard, etc.   So for me, that 1st trade is completely out of the question.  Hoglander has also clearly taken a step this season and so I want to see how he develops.

For your 2nd trade, I like the idea of bringing back Tanev but not at the expense of Hirose.  If we want Tanev, make a UFA bid in the Summer to bring him back.  Sign Ethan Bear for added depth later this year.

p.s.______________As promising as the Canucks have looked so far, I'm not sure if they would be at the same level as Colorado, Vegas, Tampa Bay, etc. even with added help.  Let the Canucks make the playoffs and win a round this year.  That would be a significant step forward this season and something that the boys could be proud about.  Next season, maybe 1-3 of Podkolzin, Raty, and Lekkerimaki step into the line-up on ELC's.  Myers comes off the books and we make better use of that cap.  The point I'm trying to make is slow and steady.  Alvin has done some fantastic things during his short tenure here (after taking the reins from Jim Rutherford after the Bruce Boudreau fiasco).

p.p.s.____________For the long term, my hope is that the Canucks can progressively take steps forward in the coming years to the point where our core players WANT to stay here long term.  Pettersson, Hughes, Hronek, and Kuzmenko, complemented by guys like Hoglander, Raty, Willander, and Podkolzin if they reach their potential.  At 30 years of age, maybe we can even sign Demko to a 5 year deal (although that would also be contingent on where Silovs is at in his development and how Demko's body is holding up).  Miller's 'peak' probably has another 3 years left, but perhaps he can continue to be a spark plug of sorts for us in different roles as he ages.

So for me, rather than 'busting a nut' and aiming for short term success, I'd like to see the Canucks get progressively better to the point where all of the aforementioned players above (with the possible exception of Demko) decide to stay here long term.......that would be the real reward in my opinion.

Thanks for your input, I figured it wouldn't actually happen but trying to find a player who can fit with Kuz and EP that has some size

Garland for Anderson would be a really good deal for Vancouver (for the reasons you mentioned) but I can't see Montreal wanting to do this.  The Canucks would likely have to add something here (prospect or a pick?) to make it worthwhile for Montreal.

After the quarter mark of the season. So after 20 games if we're top 3 in our division we're legit.

Plus if we can get rid of Garland's contract and get another top 4 RHD. That would be a big step in the right direction.

Another top 4 RHD would significantly raise the  expectations for this team.

    Agreed with this post.

Regarding the "Top 4 RHD" dream goes however, I don't think that's going to happen this season.

The only pieces that could fetch you such a piece are

    -Pettersson

    -Hughes

    -Demko

    -Kuzmenko

    -Miller

-Raping our farm (not literally.....just in case any Albertans in this thread start to get any ideas :-p)

Obviously, the first three on that list are off the list, while moving Miller would create too big a hole at center.

I pondered about Kuzmenko a few weeks back but he's also too valuable for this team.  In theory, we *could* package Myers with a 1st and/or some of our top prospects but I'm not sure if I'd be a fan of this idea.  I really love the idea of all or more of Raty, Podkolzin, and Lekkerimaki stepping into the line-up next season on ELC's and being impact players for us.  You need these types of guys on ELC's if you truly want to make a difference.

Conor Garland gets you Andrew Peeke's shit stained underpants (not even Peeke himself.....who is pretty mediocre btw).  Boeser ain't getting you a Top 4 d-man either.

I think our best bet for this season is to sign Ethan Bear later in the year.

Edit - Newly revised idea to an original idea:

To Columbus:  Andrei Kuzmenko + Anthony Beauvillier

    To Canucks:  Patrik Laine

This post might raise a few eyebrows given that Kuzmenko has outperformed Laine since getting into the league.

Having said that, lets consider the following:

    1. Laine hasn't really had a true "elite" center to play with since his Winnipeg days and even in Winnipeg, he was bullied off the Schiefele line.  Remember what Laine's production was when he was playing with Schiefele?

    2. Laine is 25 years old and is significantly younger than Kuzmenko.

My ultimate point being this.  IF you can bring Laine here and staple him to Pettersson, with Mikheyev being the defensive conscience on the other wing, then you might not only see a very formidable line but you'd likely see the return of peak Laine. Pettersson, a great playmaker, and a very good 200 foot player, playing with a guy that would be a clear upgrade over Kuzmenko if he gets back to his peak.  More importantly however, Laine, given his age, could possibly become a long term core player for us if he liked it here.

    Laine-Pettersson-Mikheyev

    PDG-Miller-Boeser

    Suter-Bluegar-Garland

    Joshua-Lafferty-Hoglander

    Hughes-Hronek

    Cole-Myers

    Soucy-Bear

    Demko

    DeSmith

The Post below was my original post in this thread but I no longer agree with what was said below

    Alright,

I myself am not sure if this trade would work out or even be beneficial, but here goes:

To Columbus:  Conor Garland, Ilya Mikheyev, [1st or Podkolzin?]

    To Vancouver:  Patrik Laine

    Kuzmenko-Pettersson-Laine

    PDG-Miller-Boeser

    Suter-Bluegar-Hoglander

    Beavillier-Studnicka-Lafferty

Columbus gets more depth while the Canucks get a crack at possibly awaking a sleeping giant.

Let's face facts - although he's been decent, Laine hasn't lived up to the hype since potting 44 goals in 2017/2018.

A large part of this reason is that he was bullied by Scheifele and Wheeler in Winnipeg (and got demoted to a different line as a result), and also hasn't had the greatest of centres to play with in Columbus.   In Vancouver, Laine wouldn't have that problem.  His face would attached at the hip to Pettersson's crotch, and we'd get this guy his long awaited 50 goals. Laine, as good as he, has the potential to be a LOT better......like we saw in 2017/2018.  Didn't the guy score 16 goals in one month one time?  That's no ordinary feat.

So assuming that the above trade is fair/realistic, I also think that Hoglander is ready to play higher in the line-up since the guy has clearly taken a leap this season.  So - Hogs enters the top 6.

All 3 of the above players have contracts that expire at or around the same time.

Would Laine be able to thrive under a tight and defensively accountable Rick Tocchet system?  I think the answer to that is "probably not" at first glance, but....c'mon....the guy would be playing with Pettersson.

The Vancouver Canucks should be worried about Pius Suter

    Jonathan Bailey

The bottom-six struggles for the Vancouver Canucks are starting to extend past the early onset of the 2023-24 season, and that should be both a short-term and long-term concern. General manager Patrik Allvin signed free agent Pius Suter to a two-year, $3.2 million contract on Aug. 11, but the Swiss forward is still without a single point through eight games.

Suter’s linemates haven’t fared much better, as Dakota Joshua has only managed one goal so far, and Anthony Beauvillier just recorded his first point of the year in the overtime loss to the New York Rangers. Conor Garland has taken Beauvillier’s place next to Suter in recent weeks, and the trade candidate only has one assist since the Canucks’ first game of the season against the Edmonton Oilers.

Suter had established himself as a reliable middle-sixer in the first three years of his NHL career, scoring no fewer than 14 goals in each. However, the 27-year-old’s overall production took a nosedive last season as he scored only 24 points in 79 games; his 0.3 points-per-game last year was comfortably worse than his previous low of 0.44.

With a player like Morgan Frost potentially available on the trade market, the Canucks would probably like to see better from Suter and co. sooner rather than latter. The team’s stars have kept them afloat through their hot start, but it’s unlikely that persists over the full 82-game season.

In addition, Vancouver’s fourth line – especially Nils Hoglander – has looked infinitely better than the third line. For their sake, that line either needs a promotion or there needs to be some moving parts in recognition of their differing performances…

Wait for Bluegar to get back + move Suter to wing.

I think Suter is more "suited" to be a winger anyways (pun intended)

Perhaps Suter was destined to be a (Red) wing?  (pun intended)

94% is really good, but he has never been a penalty killer.  If you are signing him purely for his defensive abilities, there are more specialized players who are better than Puljujarvi at being pure shutdown forwards.

But look at that finishing.  Do you know how he ended up scoring 10-15 goals those two years in Edmonton?  Let's see who he played with.

Conor Garland (1.5 mil. retained) to Nashville for Yakov Trenin

They get a 40-50 point producer at a reduced price tag..

We get a bottom six forward who is not known to produce much points wise but, will bring plenty of physicality and will drop the gloves.

We also shave 1.7 million off the cap.

I like this trade idea a lot but I can't see Nashville accepting this.  Who knows though.......

I do like the idea of Trenin playing on the 3rd line however and moving Suter to the wing.

No, not even close, lol.  Lets not get ahead of ourselves.

That 2011 team was one of the greatest teams ever assembled in NHL history (Top 75? Maybe Top 50).

I'm very happy with our current Canucks team and the way they are playing, but they are probably closer to 2006-2007 or even 2001-2002 than they are from those 2008-2013 teams.  2014-2015 also comes to mind.  We need to see a bigger sample size however.

I will say one thing.  I am of the belief that this coaching staff of Tocchet, Foote, and Gonchar is the best coaching staff that we've had since the Pat Quinn days.  This team's aggression on the PK, gap control, and tremendous attention to detail is absolutely night and day from last season.

My only concern with Pesce is his age.......and what his subsequent contract demands would be if he were to stay in Vancouver.  That could end up being a very ghastly term and cap hit.

With Hronek here, combined with Willander waiting in the wings, I'd rather see the Canucks bring in a partner for Hughes that has a much shorter term on his contract. That way, we can possibly move on from said player once Willander is ready to "take the reins" so to speak.
