Huggy looks tired - probably from all the constant coverage from the opposition the last 2 weeks.

 

I don't think at this point, they need to make big changes but maybe some tweaks to strategy sometimes - opposition is having strong fore checks all day on the D and blocking shots - nothing stopping the Canucks from doing the same to opposition from time to time.

 

Canucks really need to be a bit more flexible and less predictable in their play patterns whether it is PP, PK or defensive structure.as teams are scouted relentlessly.

 

If they can learn how to handle a Calgary team that is similar in style to the rest of the division, fast + big body rosters, it would help them down the road against the rest of the division teams like LA + Vegas.

 

The season has a lots of ups and downs - the Flames beat them with a relentless fore check etc few weeks back  - lets see if the Canucks have learned anything from that game.

What is the goals against playoff teams and non-playoff teams.

 

I'm not denying this team isn't going to the playoffs they can beat non playoff teams that 50%. They are good against bad teams for the most part.

Yeah I’m totally aware of that - it boils down to the fact that Vegas clearly was the better team tonight - they played a much better game and got the bounces…

Mostly I think we have different definition of success for this team.

Here's my analysis of what's wrong with the team:

 

-  Hughes is burning out... he's been playing 30 minute games lately too often.  He is still just a kid, younger players may be a little quicker, but they don't have as much endurance as 28-32 year olds.  I can see a huge difference between the first 15 games of the season and now.  Although it is tempting to play him a lot, (his average now is 25:00) but better to keep his average minutes to around 23:00.  He is the key to the offense. 

 

-  Same applies to a slightly lesser extent for Hronek.

 

-  JT Miller and Pettersson have been playing 20:00 per game... better to keep Petey down a little lower... around 18:00.  Same reason as Hughes.  Miller could probably play the same.  Less PK time... maybe make them the third pairing for the PK.  Work on the third and fourth lines taking on more of the PK work.

 

-  More emphasis on passing instead of carrying the puck... speed up the game that way.

 

-  Rotate in and out at least one of the bench forwards every game so everyone gets time off to be rested and gets motivated.  

 

-  Pettersson probably has a nagging injury which is hampering his play... not enough to sit him, but enough to affect play.  He is not shooting, his passes are not crisp and he is moving slower.  Only time will fix this.

 

With the addition of Zadorov, I am hoping the defense pairings will get stabilized.

we miss Soucy and Suter and now Cole is out… Petey must be injured 

 

we need to improve the roster

we only have 2 decent D and they are over loaded…

Goal differential with the top 8 teams in each conference, based on win%, is zero.  And just under 3 goals against per game. 

 

They do ok against playoff teams. Room for improvement, clearly, but not time to burn it down.

This was a retro game. Back to the early 2022-23 season.

 

1. Miller started out poorly. Miller has had a great season so far and has been the best Canuck forward. But tonight he was not good, kind of like the start of last season when he was on the ice for a lot of goals against.  Both the first two goals were partly due to poor plays by Miller.

 

2. On the first goal, 5 Canucks had the puck surrounded but no-one checked the guy who scored the goal. And Hronek had already interfered with Demko, making it hard for him to get back in the play (and he did not have his stick). The D-zone was a disorganized tire fire on that goal, kind of like a lot of goals last year.

 

3. The second goal was a classic cross-seam pass for a tap-in with no chance for the goalie. We saw a lot of those last year and not many so far this year.

 

4. Kuzy scored -- just like he did a lot last year and not much this year. And Myers was looking chaotic again (although better than last year).

 

5. Garland had a great statistical night. His Corsi was 22-10,  his ice scoring chances were 14-4 and he had the best expected goal differential on the team. The Garland, Blueger, Joshua line was good overall in the advanced stats but they could not actually put the puck in the net. That happened to Garland a lot last year. (The other three lines all got buried in the advanced stats.)

 

6. But there were some differences from last year. Notably Petey, who did not have a good night in the stats or by the eye test. Normally his passing is great. Tonight his passes were constantly being tipped or intercepted or were just off-target.

 

7. On the plus side, Juulsen continues to play well and tonight he made some big hits.

 

Overall, tonight's game is worrying. And the Canucks have been kind of hit and miss for a while now. I hope that adding Zadorov is a shot in the arm. And the Blueger line should "regress" in a positive direction. They have not been getting bounces. And maybe Tocchet can get something out of some new line combinations. PDG has not been good enough for a while now and replacing him with Kuzy on Miller's line makes sense. And they looked good today. Petey and Mik have generally been a good combination. Maybe it is time for Hogs to get an extended chance with them.

 

Bottom line: Saturday's game is an important game. Obviously the Canucks need a win at home against Calgary.

JT Miller did do a post game, heard the whole thing. Was very critical of himself first then about how the team should have approached this game.

Maybe it will show up later, don't know. Wasn't a very happy camper and I put that mildly.

There comes a time when sheer talent won’t win you games… Character will… and mental toughness is what gets you over the line… Sheer determination perseverance and a killer instinct… And a never quit attitude… This team needs to grow in that area

I’m amazed at how many people are attacking Rick Tocchet and the coaching staff for one game.

You guys had him for the Jack Adams at the end of October.

 

Simply put guys, just chill. The Canucks have had a lot of bad habits scarred into their system for years and those bad habits don’t change overnight. It takes a bit of time to eventually correct them. Our coaching staff is great for this and over time, they will learn the system necessary to be a Vegas/Bruins calibre shutdown team. 
 

Enjoy this team ladies and gents they are a treat to watch this season!
