Actually Petey’s QO is 8.2; that’s the starting point.

So you believe that he will accept less money going into UFA years. not going to happen.

The league might have changed the rules but it didn't change the agent and players salary expectations.  Unless every GM in the league views him less then his current value the starting point is 10.25 million

Nope. Any offer sheet would be below 10.74 mil AAV. But then the term would be longer: 6-8 years. So we match and win!

I think people forget to think about things logical if EP was going to sign for less then 10 mill or even at his currant base salary this season of 10.25 million it already be done. Do you really believe JR and PA view EP's value less then 10.25 million.

Depends on the term.

Ask the empties.

I'm guessing you mention it because of the 4 first rounds but keep in mind Chi would still get there 1sr round pick this season.

Chi if they really wanted to has the cap space to go after EP40, Nylander and Hronek and still have tons of cap to fill their roster

We would match any offer sheet.

That's the starting point

JTM first year salary on his 8mil contract was over 10 mil. Its not about salary, its about controlling cap. If Petey would do a contract that pays 15mil for the first year and going down to 5 mil in last year over 8 years, the Cap would be affordable to the team.

Then you are admitting that the Canucks could pay EP40 12-13 million a year

Nope. The empties have already predicted what any offer sheet would be. And it’s under 10.74 mil AAV on a long term deal.

Yes but the reason he signed that deal was that was suppose to be is Qualifying offer but the league changed the rule

Timo Meier did the first contract like that and the league did not like it so they knocked off 20%

According to Capfriendly,  anything $10,725,315 or over would be 4 x 1sts.  Under that, compensation would be 2x1st, 1 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd.

So Canucks would probably match anything under.  Anything over, then hey would have to weigh the pros and cons.

His cap hit on the 3 year term was under 8 million because he only got paid 4 million in first year, 7.8 second year, 10.2 this year. But his cap was still reasonable.

JTM contract worked the opposite, starting with higher salary but then dropping, and using signing bonuses to keep him happy.

To just up and say he got paid 10.2 this year so that is his worth is undefinable.

To be fair, Pettersons value and play was better when his salary was $4million in his current contract (two years ago) so isnt he just overpaid in the last year at 10.2 million? I want the $4 million paid guy back.

and the freed up cap space would solve all our issues. Can you imagine what we could trade for those picks. Bring Bedard and M. Celebrini home?

just admit it you know as well as anyone else the contract is going to be between 11 and 13 million depending on term

Sure but after we win the Cup this spring, Petterson will get traded with a contract like that. Even though he's a Swede.

why would it be below 10.74 million

lol if chicago or any other team is serious.. they'll offer below 8.5mil where compensation is 1st 2nd and a 3rd.. for 1 year.. the canucks are either forced to match and watch EP go to UFA without the ability to trade him at all during the season because you can't trade matched offer sheet players for 1 full year which takes him to july 1st can't even trade his rights.. or let him go for a 1st 2nd and a 3rd rounder.. hardly close to what EP is worth in a trade... like if they already negotiated with EP to accept the 8.5mil offer sheet.. and if successful offers him extra 500k/year for 7 or 8 years to make up the difference he would have lost if signing a 8.5mil offer sheet.. or offer to sign him when he reaches ufa in 1 year for that extra 500k.. it actually benefits EP because his desire to win.. and keeping all the future trade asset on his new team.

there's also a 3rd scenario.. the canucks catches wind a team is going to legitimately do the 1 year offer sheet.. they'll take EP to team elected abitration to block any offer sheet from happening and try to get a deal done prior to the abitration hearing.. and if they can't get a deal done.. they can accept the abitration and then try to trade him..  but the value wouldn't be great unless EP is willing to do an extension.. otherwise he'll just be a 1 year rental and the best you probably get is a 1st prospect and a player/cap dump and maybe more 2nd/3rd rounders.

EP have the upper hand in this negotiation.. the only leverage the canucks have on him is threaten him with a trade to a team he doesn't like which again is not much leverage.. all he has to do is "leak" out he will not be re-signing with any team that trade for him.

yeah qualifying offer is 8.5 for the RFA and other teams can steal him at random unless he takes it for a year. Then next year he is UFA. So by not going by a team deal he could end up in arizona or something
