Petey was so improved, Myers and Zadorov were our best defense team, and Juulsen was very good (a couple of misplays). Our worst defense pairing was Quinn and Hronek. I put it down to an off night. I've always been a JT fan and really thought he should be captain over Bo, but his inability to control his emotions, thwarted that opportunity. He's really got it together this year and is leading the team in so many ways. IMO, if Quinn wasn't our captain (not totally sold), JT would be the obvious choice. I'm thinking JT plays a big role in the dressing room. With all the on ice emotions, that is the perfect place for him to show the leadership.

hockeyfan-observer
Happy with the victory tonight - I thought neither team were really at their best - seems most of the goals on both sides were a result of breakdowns, goal tending, line changes or coverage. As well as only being 1/3 into the season, this is a tough time of year for hockey as most teams will be battling it out each night as they are still in the playoffs - once the picture becomes clearer in February - we'll get the "tank for Macklin" teams on occasion so some games will not be as intense. Was glad to see Petey step it up - I think he is pacing himself more this year - maybe trying to balance it out so he is fresher once they head into the final stretch. Next game against Tampa will be tough- the Canucks will need to bring their A game to beat them as they always seem to have our number even if they just couple of games above 500.this season. Rest up and enjoy the victory tonight guyz - then really go at it on Tuesday.

Popular Post JamesB
Late comments: 1. Great to get the win and the Canucks deserved it. But it was closer than was comfortable. 2. The game was, in some ways, the reverse of the Minnesota game. Tonight the Canucks started strong and led 13-2 on the shot clock fairly late in the first period. The Canucks were ahead 1-0 and unlucky not be ahead by more. 3. But the Canucks got into penalty trouble late in the first with partially overlapping penalties to Hronek and Miller resulting in a 5-3 PK for about a minute. The Canucks weathered the storm, killing both penalties, but those penalties broke the momentum. In the second period, the Canucks continued to play well at 5-on-5 building a 3-1 lead but got into more penalty trouble including two! too many men penalties. The Canucks killed off those penalties but ultimately gave up a PP goal on Carolina's 5th man advantage, closing the gap to 3-2. 4. In the third, Carolina came on very strong and tied the game before Petey scored the ultimate game winner on an excellent play by the entire line. 5. After that, the game was like the first period against Minny -- played almost entirely in the Canucks end. It looked like the team went 10 or 12 minutes without ever establishing possession in Carolina's zone. The good thing is that the Canucks played a structured disciplined game even under pressure and give not give up much. Still, Carolina outshot the Canucks 10-3 in the final period and the Corsi battle was 26-6. So, yeah, great to get the win, but the ability of other teams to dominate play for extended periods is a concern. It happened tonight, against Minny, and against New Jersey. 6. Petey's line obviously had a great night Lafferty, Mik, and Petey were all very good at both ends of the ice and Tocchet moved away from standard pattern by giving Petey's line the top shutdown responsibility against the Aho line. And they won that battle. Frankly, on paper and on the ice, Petey, Mik and Laff arguably make sense as the team's top shutdown line instead of the Miller, although the Miller has done a good job in that role all year. 7. Miller scored a nice goal with both Hogz and Boeser making nice plays. But the Miller line got buried statistically tonight. The Corsi battle was 13-4 against when that line was on the ice. 8. The Aman-PDG-Kuzy line did not get a lot of ice-time, but I thought they played well and their underlying advanced stats were good. Kuzy is having a hard time making the right decisions. For example, on the second PP he had a great shooting opportunity from the slot that he should have taken but instead made a low percentage pass that got tipped with the result that the team did not even get a shot on goal. But he is due for some luck (or regression to the mean in a positive direction). 9. The D was pretty good overall. I like what we are seeing with Zadorov. Myers and Zadorov could turn out be a decent second pairing. After finally getting two wins in row, I can take a deep breath. Tampa will be a tough test next Tuesday. 2 3

It's the Boudreau - Hoglander thing all over again Boudreau sat Kuz Missile too. Coaches want to win. They play the guys who help them win.

A Lighting team that has not been to the finals 4 straight years, and is well rested is scary as fuck. Mark my words there purposely playing coy and playing 70ish percent till playoff time. Sorry rambling on, main purpose was to say don't kill yourself trying to win non conference teams, do it with west teams below us.

I don't think anyone's arguing that. Just sad to see a player who was loving his game, bringing all kinds of excitement to us fans and contributing nicely to his linemates' play as well, fall from grace and end up on the end of the bench for the most part. I think we all want him to succeed in a way that works for both Tocchet and Kuz without him having to totally reinvent himself and develop a style that takes away from what he'd been doing so well last season. Just a sad reality now that things might not ultimately pan out for him here as he appears to be the odd man out and Sutr's return will only increase the number of quality players vying for minutes

-AJ-
Update on road to the playoffs: Actual results required might be easier than this, depending on how our Pacific division rivals below us play. Currently, there is a very large gap between us at (effectively) 3rd in the Pacific and the 4th place Oilers beneath us. 1
