He was included just so the number of contracts stayed the same.  The pick is the asset with value here.

Nick Cicek spent considerable time in the NHL last year, but seems more like an AHL level guy on our team (he's spent all of this year in the AHL so far). He's waiver-exempt, so he'll probably go straight down to Abbotsford and improve that team considerably. He's struggled quite a bit this year in the AHL, but he's a 23-year old defenseman, so a change of scenery could change things and make him a top 4 AHL D again. His contract is about $60k more than Studnicka's, but with both in the AHL at that salary level, it won't change anything.

 

Right now, Studnicka is a notably better player than Cicek, but a year ago, Cicek was having a strong AHL season and got an extended call-up to the NHL. He's also a year younger than Studnicka. We're getting some potential but a worse player, at least based on this year. The 6th rounder makes up the gap between Studs and Cicek. If we're lucky, Cicek returns to form and we have a solid AHL guy who could maybe be a call-up with injuries.

 

I don't believe Friedman is waivers-exempt, so there's a chance we lose him on waivers, so I'm betting is getting Cicek to replace him.

 

This is a small and relatively insignificant deal, but you can really see the careful planning behind the move.

One thing is for sure though, Allvin and co aren't afraid to move on from players they don't see a fit on the team and certainly don't waste time doing so.

Its so refreshing that this management thinks 2-3 steps ahead.

 

They've always made moves to posture for something else. I wouldn't be surprised if this is posturing for another move down the line. Like you said could be anticipation of moving on from Friedman. I remember Tocchet saying he wanted to get a look on Wolanin so perhaps he comes up and they wanted to ensure Abbotsford isn't barren.

 

Hirose and McWard are out with injuries, that blueline gets thin down there.

I just think that PA has ice in his veins, and he says "Here's the deal, call me if you're in, I'm not gonna wait forever"

 

Even though it's "only" a 6th round pick, unlike with previous regimes I have full confidence in this new management team to pull a rabbit out of the hat with later round picks (hello Kirill Kudryavtsev)

Or with others down the road, like TDL. 

 

If the pace of winning continues there’s no reason not to make a push by acquisition at the TDL or just before it. 
 

I like that management is thinking, potentially, a step or two ahead and potentially positioning themselves for some real talent acquisition.

I was actually thinking earlier today that it had been 2 weeks since PA made a trade and with trade freeze coming he was probably going to do something.

SCOUTING REPORT

The undrafted defenseman has NHL size, and he has developed his offensive game since turning pro. That said, the main part of his game should continue to be an ability to stay at home and defend his position; he is more concerned with keeping the puck out of his team's net than putting up points. Also, he is working to become harder to play against, to improve his skating and to be more efficient at making a good first pass out of his own zone.

Long Range Potential: Useful defenseman with a little upside.
