Background: Before the game, I was thinking that 3 points out of 4 would be a great outcome this weekend. Early ("morning") games for a team travelling two time zones from west to east are always tough. Given the normal rhythm of game days, your body is just not ready to go at 11:00 am your time, as is well-documented. Also, Minny has been playing well and even Chicago is no pushover (no team in the NHL is, especially at home). Even 2 pts out of 4 would be ok. 2. As for the Minny game, I thought it would be a win to get out of the first period tied and then maybe get into the game later. But, as things turned out, the Canucks were badly outplayed in the first and went down 1-0. DeSmith was excellent and kept them in the game in the first. Then the Joshua-Blueger-Garland line came back with an excellent hardworking goal to tie the game early in the second. From then on the game was fairly even at 5-on-5 and the Canucks had a bunch of PP opportunities they could not convert. 3. Once again the Blueger line was very good, coming out on top in the statcards analytics numbers, partly because they scored the only Canuck goal. In Natural Stat Trick, the Pettersson line was the best by the expected goals metric. I thought Petey was very good today. 4. The Miller line struggled, and played badly on the Minny goal. Miller looked off today - mishandling pucks, making poor passes, and making poor decisions. That is unusual for Miller. I can see why Tocchet dropped Hogs off that line. In the early going Hogs did not do much and was kind of invisible defensively, and not in a good way. But the change (Suter for Hogs) did not do much and Miller and Boeser finished with the worst expected goal differential on the team. 5. On D, Hughes had one of his weaker games of the season but, even on an off day, he is still good. The rest of the D was okay, but Hronek and Myers had below-average games. Fortunately, DeSmith was there to bail them out when necessary. It is always a bonus if your backup goalie can come in and get a point in a tough road game. 6. Probably the biggest negative on the day was the PP. It did not look sharp. At Tocc said in the post-game interview, it was too static. And Hughes made a lot of misplays with the puck, as did Miller, losing opportunities for good chances. 7. Conversely, the PK was a positive. Joshua, Blueger and Suter did the heavy lifting for the forwards. It is good having both Blueger and Suter available as they can both take D-zone faceoffs. 6. Strangely, the Canucks had one of their highest shot totals of the year, with 34 shots in regulation. But a lot of that was on the PP, as the Canucks had 10 minutes of PP time. 7. The OT and SO were obviously kind of disappointing, but at least the team got a point. 8. A win tomorrow turns the weekend into a big success and the Canucks will have Demmer in goal. Tocchet, Foote, Gonchar, Garlands 3rd line and DeSmith took part in the optional skate in Minny the others all rested up in hotel(on the bench) for Chicago. I've always thought he would fit better on a rebuilding team. He would be a good leader and let's face it...he sure can play the 'right way' day in and out.
