I'd say it's neck and neck In a recent vote, Hughes got every first place vote. It's not even close. Hughes would win in a landslide if the real vote was today...

Hughes: 56 + 34 = 90 Makar: 54 + 8 = 62 On a very good team Makar has struggled defensively. 1

Defensively, he has not been very good at all this year...

Hat Trick Maker
I just took a look at the Oilers' schedule, and wow, they only have to play three sets of back-to-back games from the season's start through the end of January. For reference, the Canucks will have played 7 sets by the end of the month.

Your two examples are Orr and Lidstrom? Let's just quit the posturing, we all know offense is 95+% of the Norris voting. Hughes would probably win, I agree. But it certainly wouldn't be a landslide. Elias Pettersson
13 minutes ago, stawns said: No, when's the last time a defensive defenseman won a Norris? Who said anything about defensive defencmen? You said defence didn’t count at all in voting for the Norris. This is simply not true. If you have two similar offensive defenceman in the running, then the one who is better defensively will win the award. It’s very simple. Makar doesn’t even have as many points as Hughes and his +/- is atrocious compared to Hughes. The race isn’t even close. But you are standing by your points because you don’t want to admit your wrong. Also, Hampus Lindholm is considered more of a defensive defenceman and he finished 4th in Norris voting last year. Ahead of Morrissey, Hamilton, Heiskanen, Dahlin and Hughes. All those Dmen had way more points than Lindholm so how do you explain that? Where are those “so called” fans now? Hughes is a generational player. He will be a 100 point and plus 50 D man for many seasons to come. He’s clearly better than anyone else right now and his only competition is Cale Makar. He has an another 15 years left in his career. He might end up as one of the greatest defencmen in NHL history. Hughes is already at the level of Paul Coffey. The only real defenceman that was better than Coffey was Bobby Orr. And maybe Ray Bourque and Nick Lidstrom. And Doug Harvey if we are going way back.

Yup. Hughes controls the game like only a small few before. Benning was a bad GM but he did draft Quinn and then sign him to a fantastic contract.
