[Proposal] Some changes to set us up to succeed in the playoffs

Recommended Posts

To CHI: Kuzmenko

To VAN: 2024 2nd round pick (VAN)

To CBJ: 2024 1st round pick (VAN) + Raty

To VAN: Boone Jenner

To ARI: 2024 3rd round pick (VAN) + Linus Karlsson

To VAN: Jason Zucker (50% retained)

Jenner has 2 more seasons signed at $3.75m and would be a perfect fit with Petey. Also he is a legit top 6 center in case of injuries. Saving some cap and upgrading Kuz with Jenner is a move for this season but also for the next 2 seasons when EP40 and Hronek will need to be paid more. The cost of moving Raty and downgrading our 1st to a 2nd in 2024 is worth it imo. CJB are not going to move Jenner for less than that, and perhaps not at all.

Zucker is a pure rental, brings speed and finish to our top 6. Hogs is not quite ready for a fulltime top 6 role. Zucker has languished in ARI this season but showed what he can do last season playing with decent players like Gino. Would fit nicely with Miller and Boeser imo.

Lineup after moves (still cap compliant):

Jenner Pettersson Mikheyev

Zucker Miller Boeser

Joshua Blueger Garland

Hoglander Suter Lafferty

(Aman)

Hughes Hronek

Zadorov Myers

Soucy Cole

(Friedman Juulsen)

Demko (DeSmith)

Some interesting players for sure.  But I'm not sure Columbus is willing to trade away their captain just yet.  He's been their best player and he earned the all-star nod through hard work.  They need to move their surplus defencemen first.

If I was looking for a top 6 forward, I don't think Boone Jenner would be at the top of my list.  Jake Guentzel would be however.  As for Jason Zucker, he is basically a poor man's Kuzmenko, so not sure how long he would last until he hits Tocchet's doghouse...

Guentzel's great but he will cost as much as Jenner to obtain and we'd have to move out Kuzmenko to fit him in and it still leaves no cap space to upgrade Miller's line, who could really use a top 6 forward.

i.e. with the cap space of moving out Kuz would you prefer Jenner + Zucker or just Guentzel?

Now factor in that Guentzel will cost $7m+ to extend, which imo makes him unaffordable to resign in VAN next season. Jenner with 2 years remaining at $3.75m is a steal and goes a long way to helping us remain cap compliant and competitive.

We could get more than a 2nd for Kuzmenko but I like the idea of Jenner a lot. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a trade based around Kuzmenko and Guentzel.

Love to get more than a 2nd. I'm not convinced he would get more, but obviously we take the best deal we can for Kuz without retention

Jenner plays the right way, for sure. Agree that CJB won't be keen to trade him, but in reality they are not going anywhere right now, they can cash in and get some serious assets for Jenner. Raty would fit nicely with their young forward group of Fantilli, Johnson, Sillinger, Marchenko, etc

lol.. emptying out the cupboard for a delusional cup run?? sure jenner is under contract for 2 more season.. but we need to stop bringing in these career 30-40 point guys and slapping them on the top 6.. jenner is injury prone the last time he finished a full season was like 7-8 years ago.. his career high is 49 points 8 years ago and his last 4 season as low as 24 to as high as 45.. not sure what part of those stat screams a top 6 to u.. that's even worse than garland.. we need like a consistent 60+ point guy in the top 6 if you are going to get rid of kuzmenko.. having a bunch of 20-40 point career guy in your top 6 will not help with your struggling top 2 lines.

the canucks are not a contender.. they are not in the position to be trading away picks and prospect. jenner had 2 good season but full of injuries and then a bunch of mediocre poor seasons prior. the guy already missed 11 games this season.. 14 last season 23 the season before and 15 the shortened season.. and the cost is a 1st and a high prospect?? easy pass

Few questions for you:

1.  Why do you believe that the Canucks are not a contender?  (what pieces are they missing)

2. How do you think the Canucks should proceed forward over these next few years?   Should they make any trades at all that cater to the short term?

We are short multiple consistent top 6 forwards. When ur star player is playing with players career high is less than 40 points and that’s your top scoring line? I mean right now watching the game it’s clear we have no one skilled enough to play with ep nor the 2nd winger option on millers line.

they need to fix the cap ie figure out what they are doing with garland kuzmenko or whoever else. Contenders don’t have players sitting in the pressbox at 5.5 mil. Between garland kuzmenko mikheyev that’s 15mil for very underwhelming impact.

They can afford to make short terms move if it doesn’t cost them a high prospect or a 1st 2nd rounders those should be used for an actual impact player that’s in ur long term plan like a hronek. 1st and raty for an injury prone 30 year old? Easy pass. Really they should just stand pact this year at the TDL unless it’s kuzmenko for whomever short term. They really need to figure out the contract with hronek and pettersson before they do anything. If anything New Jersey taught us 1 year fluke doesn’t make u a contender.

Garland/Joshua/Blueger is literally a top 10 line in the NHL right now, not sure what you're on about calling him underwhelming impact. Kuzmenko doesn't play Tocchets style, however other teams are interested in him, so I don't see how you can claim underwhelming. Sure, I'll give you Mikheyev.

lol top 10 line in the nhl??? not sure what you are smoking.. they are playing great.. but calling them top 10 lines in the leauge lmao.. yes garland impact is underwhelming for his cap hit. he's making an impact right now sure if cap doesn't exist he'd be great... but he's not making an impact a 5mil player should be making.. he made 0 impact when he was playing on the top 2 lines. who cares if other teams are interested in kuzmenko?? other team interested at kuzmenko plays a part in him being underwhelming on the canucks? we have 15mil invested in 3 players that if you look at the cap hit only without looking at the player you would think that's 3 top 6 forward.. but in reality you have 1 player with actual top 6 skill sitting in the pressbox.. one of them being a 3rd liner.. and the other playing in the top 6 coz we have nothing better to play in the top 6...

and we wonder why we have no cap space to sign better players to play in the top 6

They literally have the 11th highest XGoals% in the NHL right now. So yes, basically a top 10 line in the league. Look it up buddy.

According to moneypuck they actually are the 11th best line in the league atm

I get what you are saying, but I don't see Zucker as a fit in Tocchet's system, he's basically another Kuzmenko who doesn't play defence.  As for Jenner, he is a centre mostly and is best as a 3C.  He's never hit more than 49 points in his career.  Sure, playing with Miller he might get more, but he doesn't scream top 6 forward to me.

As for Guentzel, he will cost more but you have to pay for quality.  At least he is a legit 40 goal guy and will be a massive upgrade on Suter and Lafferty.  Yes, we will need to move Kuzmenko to fit him under the cap, but we have Lekkerimaki coming to take a spot so we should be 6 deep in the top 6.

Mikheyev   Pettersson   Lekkerimaki

Guentzel    Miller            Boeser

Now this is a top 6 that can win the Stanley Cup...

The Canucks are not a contender as long as Suter and Lafferty are in the top 6.  And Kuzmenko is in the press box...

Joshua-Bluegar-Garland

Mikheyev-Suter-Kuzmenko

Hoglander-Aman-Lafferty

Voila.  Problem solved.  😛

So Dakota Joshua and Teddy Blueger are going to lead us to the cup playing 20 minutes a night on the 2nd line?

I think that is an even worse lineup as now our 3rd line is expected to play over their pay grade.

At the end of the day, Allvin needs to bite the bullet and get Petey some wingers to play with.

Use the Mikheyev-Suter-Kuzmenko line as the 2nd line.

Or better yet, refer to my Elias Lindholm proposal idea.  😛

i don't know about those players pacifically, but you have the right idea. both top 2 lines need some sandpaper on them, hard to play against and allowing the other 2 to create magic. imo, more skilled lafferty and joshua types.

Suter is a 3C not a 2C. Lindholm would be a massive upgrade but we’d have to pay him $9 million and it would cost us Kuzmenko, our 2025 1st and Höglander.

 Agree with you on Suter.

With regards to Lindholm, what if acquired him as a rental like we did with Toffoli? (or as the Rangers did with Patty Kane?)  Only sign Lindholm long term in the minor event that our negotiations with Petey do not go well.
