He was basically a free pickup and $5.5m isn't chump change. Of course, he's worth a draft pick at least but I'm not sure how high that would be at this point. I'm sure that some team would absolutely love to have him when they saw him scoring 39 goals last season. It will however frees up cap space situation for the Canucks if they do waive him. The two times I’ve been beaten up good (12-2) in my life. I was pretty quiet after. O’Brien on the other hand sure had lots to say after some good head shots. still wondering how O’Bonehead only got the extra 2 minutes for roughing? And love how Joshua stayed on that puck to get his goal. That Zadorov fight was something to behold. Loved it! The crowd went ape shit! Huge highlight of the night. The whole game was a physical chip-fest. The Coyotes came to play. They were strong and had good chances. Our forechecking wasn't the greatest tonight. We had our best shifts in the final three minutes when it counted to get the win. And that new, bigger scoreboard is awesome! Reminds me of some games in the 2010-11 season when the Canucks would get some quiet 2-1 or 3-2 wins and just keep rolling. These are the things that stood out for me. 1. As Tocchet, the advanced stats, and a lot of people on CFF have said, Joshua had a great game. Not just scoring the winning goal, but playing excellent 200 ft. hockey, contributing to the physical game, and playing well on the PK. 2. Special teams were good. The PP only scored once (a great shot by Petey) in 5 opportunities but it had a lot of good looks and was unlucky not to get another one. The PK was excellent in its two kills. Myers was in the box for both, but he had a pretty good game otherwise. The Canucks used 6 forwards relatively evenly on the PK: Suter, Blueger, Joshua, Petey, Aman, and Mikheyev. They were all good. In 4 minutes the Coyotes had 1 shot and an expected goal total of 0.03 -- basically nothing. 3. Zadorov thumped O'Brien, who was trying to be an a**hole (and succeeding). Nice to have a guy like Z on the team. He settled the game down, which is a big plus as it means the team did not have to burn up a lot of additional energy. 4. The elephant in the room is Kuzy. I have been positive about Kuzy as he has been trying to rebuild his game on a solid defensive foundation. Tocchet has been working hard to get him playing the right way and hoping for the scoring to come. But Kuzy was terrible tonight and was benched for the entire 3rd period. On the Arizona goal Kuzy made a very poor play, becoming the 4th defender to surround the passer (Kerfoot) and being too far away to do any good. And he ignored the shooter (Dermott), who he should have checked. The biggest problem was that he was standing in no-man's land instead of making the right read and taking Dermott. On the PP, pretty much every time he touched the puck it hurt the PP as he would make a bad shot, a bad pass, or just fumble the puck. He most obvious error was a terrible give-away about 2/3 of the way through the 2nd period. The announcers thought that he just mistook the Arizona player for a Canuck defender. 5. The Kuzy-Suter-Mik line was disappointing again tonight. However, Suter and Mik were good on the PK and were good playing shutdown in the 3rd period. Putting Suter and Mik with a good defensive forward (Arsh Bains?) would give the team a very good shutdown line and we could just call the Garland line the "second line". I just don't know what the best strategy is with Kuzy. He has a good attitude and is trying hard but the situation seems to be pushing him into too many mental errors. 6. Demmer did not have a lot of work but he was good. Hoggy was good. The Lotto line was ok but not great. Boeser shot wide on several great chances tonight. 7. The team as a whole had an excellent first period and was unlucky to go into the first intermission tied. Overall, it was a good start to the homestand, especially as most of thier Conference rivals lost (but Edmonton won). Big game against Toronto on Saturday. hockeyfan-observer Posted January 19 Share Posted January 19 (edited) Very happy with the result tonight - thought it was a hard working team effort against a very competitive Coyote team - I see now why they have beaten the likes of Avs, and the Bruins.- Keller's line with two 20 year olds was also very noticeable. Given it was the first game back after a long road trip predominately 3 time zones away, thought the Canuck energy level was very good - their defensive play in front of Demko also got a bit better as the game went on and it was great to see them concentrating on the skill of stick checking as several times, players were able to dislodge the puck from the opposing player to nullify a scoring chance. Not sure what has happened to Kuzmenko this year though - just not getting the looks or have any success with either line - I think he needs to simplify his game and drive to the net more (as he is not a small player) especially if shots outside are not working - kind of like what Joshua has been doing Rest up tonight guyz - Interesting matinee match-up against Leaf Nation on Saturday - Canucks will need a full 60m effort + correct the mistakes from their last meeting - might just come down game of errors and who makes the least along with the better goal-tending. If he were to get waived I think Chicago picks him up on a freebie and plays him with Bedard. Then Kuzy will score 50 next year. Unafraid to go to the danger areas. But once the bag was secured he didn't do those things. Since he got popped in the nose he's fallen off a cliff. So we would be in the same situation as when we traded for Zadorov, whereby we wouldn't have to send back any cap to the other team. This could be a huge advantage in order to get a rental or even a long term asset. Let's say St. Louis wants to blow it up and doesn't want any salary back. We could offer them our 1st round pick for Buchnevich and they get him off the books completely for next season. it would suck to not even get a pick for Kuzy, but unfortunately Tocchet has lowered his trade value to almost zero now. Its not a constant rebuild. We are first over all in the league, have to be considered a contender for the cup and now you want to trade our leading goal scorer for what? I have waited over 50 seasons to see a team play this well. They are better today than the 2011 team. The 94 team maybe. If we are trading we need to remove the players that are not contributing, even if we waived Kuz it wouldnt be a horrible decision, although i would hate to see him end up on Mc Davids wing. Lastly i dont know what more Boeser needs to do to gain some respect. He is on pace for 50 and yet some still think he should be traded.
