The Russia/Ukraine War Thread

Interesting news from France.  AP has a bit more tempered view of things:

Macron again declines to rule out Western troops in Ukraine, but says they’re not needed now

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron warned Western powers against showing any signs of weakness to Russia as he reiterated his position Thursday that sending Western troops into Ukraine shouldn’t be ruled out, though he said today’s situation doesn’t require it.

In an interview on French national television TF1 and France 2, Macron was asked about the prospect of sending Western troops to Ukraine, which he publicly raised last month in comments that prompted pushback from other European leaders who stressed they had no plans to do so.

“We’re not in that situation today,” he said, but added that “all these options are possible.”

A new Russian school textbook has been produced that distorts the history of the war against Ukraine and encourages students to join the army.

It has been designed for a new subject entitled "Fundamentals of Security and Defence of the Motherland". The lesson is compulsory for high school students aged 15 to 18 in Russia and occupied territories in Ukraine. It will be taught once a week from September, replacing a lesson known as "Fundamentals of Safe Living".

"Russia fights with integrity," the authors insist. In several excerpts, they suggest Russia prioritises the safety of Ukrainian civilians and minimises destruction, while "Ukraine frequently targets civilian infrastructure".

I think, just on a skimming of the daily news, that 'we the west' being every European nation, North America and our mutual allies around the globe might be best served by serving Moldova.

The poorest of the Euro nations. Lets send NATO to Moldova, if they will agree, and funding to both lift them out of poverty, stamp out human trafficking and reinforce a border of Ukraine, outside the theater of operations. It is incredibly risky, too risky, to initiate Moldova into NATO, but like an island in the pacific can be a protectorate of the USA, maybe Moldova will agree to accept infrastructure, green backs and technology in exchange for NATO bases on its territory and a path to future membership?

Euros in Ukraine at this time would open ww3 to an open conflict rather than just a shadow war.

decades ago in one of my training camps, there was a wash out from the foreign legion. I remember he didn't make it through the death march portion of the French Foreign Legion training curriculum, but when we were climbing ropes up three stories and ringing a bell before repelling down the rope, this guy put his legs strait out in front of him in a V like a gymnast would on the rings, and with just his hands climbed hand over hand up the rope, three stories high, rang the bell and swiftly descended it. We talked later at the canteen and he fell out of the death march very late in it: to graduate the FFL candidates go on a grueling march through the desert somewhere, and if they fall out, they fail boot camp and are left to their own devices there where they fall. That may have changed in the last 30 years but if the FFL is going to hunker down on the border with Ukraine that is something. If they go to Odessa though, all bets are off on this remaining a regional conflict.

edit: from memory they are also given just the time it takes to finish boot camp to learn french: there is no translator and you either learn to hear the orders or you fail. They accept any nationality and any language candidates and they accept convicts taking the badge rather than life in prison or death penalty's in other countries. Only they don't care if you learn french or not: just if you don't in roughly six months, you fail.

They also have about an 80% rejection rate for people trying to enlist.  I think they've gotten a little pickier about some crimes as well, although minor ones aren't a problem.

Looks like the Repugs finally realized that they actually have to pass stuff.

House Republicans will pass Ukraine aid after backing down on border demand

GOP had previously demanded Congress address US-Mexico border crossings before passing further foreign aid

Color me skeptical until we see a vote brought to the house. I find it hard to believe they'll vote for these separately without the border deal.

Also, this could further delay things?

Quote

One member of his caucus, Marjorie Taylor Greene, as recently as January said that she would trigger a vote on a motion to remove Mr Johnson from his position as speaker if he were to put a bill to fund Ukraine’s military on the House floor.

“We can’t fund Ukraine,” she told NBC News, adding that it was “an absolute no-go .... a reason to vacate.”

I wonder what they were told that changed their minds? Is the situation inside Russia changing that fast? Politically if a successful resolution to the Ukrainian situation is achieved before November it would be a massive win for Biden. If this is what is happening the GOP  might want to gather in some shirt tails. Is Macron’s tough talk a lead into a NATO involvement, no matter how small, that Biden can use his executive powers to aid Ukraine? Action independent of Congressional action? It has been done before.

There are apparently quite a few Ukrainians serving the the Foreign Legion. In February 2022 they were all given leave off absence from the Legion and allowed to take all their gear with them to go back to Ukraine. I’m sure their brothers in arms from the Legion can’t wait to help them for real.
