The Russia/Ukraine War Thread

Sharpshooter

The first batch of F-16s has arrived in Ukraine. Maintenance and refueling will take place in Poland and Romania, which is why Russian propagandists are threatening to target airbases hosting Ukrainian F-16s. It's worth noting that these airbases are operated by American forces, meaning an attack would risk American lives. The consequences of such an action should be clear. In any case, these bombers are here to send  the right message. 🙂

lets see how stuipid Putin really is ..

Going too far, starts the Middle East War. That gets ‘us’ into WW3

hmm

Thanks for this Sam. 14 brigades would be around 35,000 men. I do not expect a AFU offensive but a strengthening and rotation from the front. The worse case scenario if that Ukrainian losses are at a 1:4 ratio to Russian which could mean 250 casualties per day. Many wounded Ukrainian soldiers return to the front after recovery but the losses are horrendous. The question might become whether the political need for a front line success forces an offensive prior to the POTUS vote in November. Hopefully that decision is based on military assessment and not political.

Opinion.

It will still take a lot for the Israeli conflict to escalate on to a scale like Ukraine. Nor is Iran the most dangerous obstacle for the West as much as it is most topical.

I wonder if that War,  IF it escalates , is more rocket / missile orientated.

UKR Vs RUZ may be considered more of a “Hybrid” war .   Ground forces/ Artillery/ Drones/ missiles / Air Force/ .

Seems IDF really like to pin point their strikes autonomously.. and have less physical engagement.

    Good point Surf !

ps ,  I don’t think any Allie wants to waste any time with Iran,.
If that enemy can be nullified quickly, saving lives and weapons,

what’s left in surplus and forces may possibly be focused elsewhere ?

Perhaps creates a window of opportunity for IDF and UKR to share more intelligence and assets.

Upgrades !!

The WSJ published a list of weapons that will accompany the delivery of F-16's to Ukraine. Here are their capabilities:

1) AGM-88 HARM (image 1) - Anti-radar/radiation homing air-to-ground missile with a range up to 80 nmi (148 km). The newer AGM-88G variant has a standoff range of 80 nmi (148 km) but there is no indication the AFU will receive them.

2) Improved JDAM-ER (image 2) -- 500-lb (and up to 2,000-lb) air dropped gliding guided bomb with a maximum range of 39.1 nmi (72.5 km). These are what the Russians copied to create their FAB UMPK glide bombs. FYI: Ukraine is known to already have the standard JDAM bomb available as well.

3) AMRAAM AIM-120 (image 3) -- Advanced Medium Range Air-to-air (A2A) Missile which is capable of "beyond visual range" (fire and forget) active transmit-receive radar guidance and has a range of 57–65 nmi (105–120 km). The more advanced AIM-120D has a range of 86–97 nmi (160–180 km) but there is no indication the AFU will receive them. These weapons will most likely be deployed against RF Su-34/35 aircraft (and all other Russian air targets) in an attempt to suppress their use of FAB UPMK weapons.

4) AIM-9X "Sidewinder" (image 4) -- Substantially upgraded short-range air intercept (A2A combat) missile with an imaging infrared focal-plane array (FPA) seeker that has a claimed 90° off-boresight targeting capability (it will lock on simply by looking at the target), both control surface and thrust vectoring, and a range of up to 20 nmi (36 km).

russia HAD about 400 front line combat aircraft at the start of the war (air to air).
now with the RU air fleet having to cover...
moscow
its pilot school
the north of russia
the pacific
the baltic
koningsburg
the south
aircraft in maintance
syria
combat losses
non combat losses
the aircraft for the war in ukraine cant be 150.... MAYBE at the most

with 50 ukr aircraft (29s and 27s)
the polish 20 MIGS coming
up to 30 aircraft from another country
the 70 F16s in total
the 30-50 mirages....
and the fact that ukraine has more air defense and better EW than russia now..
its going to be a fun match up
