One thing noticeable from the two days of camp so far is both Tocchet and Gonchar taking some time with Podz after his rushes and explaining/teaching him. Podz often looks a little frustrated with or disappointed in himself to be honest, but I think coaching is very focused on setting his standard higher while also encouraging confidence. It’s obvious they envision him as a key piece going forward and are giving him a lot of attention and positive reinforcement so far. One thing I noticed specifically today was Tocchet twice mentioning to him to keep his feet moving even slightly while observing play so that he can use his leg strength more rapidly to push off and create an opportunity to receive a pass. Podz playing well in camp but I think coaching trying to remind/improve the little things that’ll give him a play advantage. Noticed many of the drills on each side of the ice called dead as offense just setting up. I think that’s on purpose to psychologically implement some conditioning to reiterate how much he wants the team to buy in to the defensive responsibilities leading into their transition game. Tocchet really applying that strong defensive component to almost every one of the drills. More focus on that than driving offense and the results of it at this time, imho. Quinn Hughes was taking his time to sign autographs for a HUGE crowd by the bench (I was STUFFED in the crowd against the railing) and at one point kids got so desperate that they began to start throwing their hats and jerseys at Hughes from above, in quick session. He just threw his sharpie down hard and left. Keep in mind they were all screaming "HUGHES" "HUGHES CAN YOU SIGN THIS?" "HUGHES CAN I HAVE YOUR STICK?" "HUGHES!" which is fine, but it was definitely overwhelming once objects started raining down.
