Whitecaps 1  Charlotte 1

A justified draw for both teams.

I thought Raposo had a noticeable game.  Kreilach not so much.  I'd like to see more of Fafa Picault.

The Charlotte keeper really fumbled the Raposo goal.   Takaoka  made a terrific play preventing Charlotte from going ahead 2-0.

New record for Whitecaps opening game attendance - 29,624.

The Raposo goal kind of reminded me of when a hockey player goes in on a breakaway and moves their stick like they're going for the deke, but just let the puck carry on using momentum....the goalie follows the deke and more or less moves away from the puck....

Can't say enough about that save from Takaoka.....without that I think the 'Caps are looking at a home opener loss for sure....

Vancouver 2    San Jose 0

A Whitecaps' win is always appreciated but it has to be said that the first 75 minutes of this game was a yawner.

Things livened up with about 15 minutes left when Berhalter drove a power shot through a bunch of defenders and scored.  San Jose tried to rally but the game was cemented when Ahmed scored a beauty of a goal to make it 2-0 with a few minutes left.

First time in five years that Vancouver has come away from San Jose with a win.

It's kind of bizzaro world in MLS right now.....

I don't think a Canadian side has lost a match so far....Montreal isn't a huge surprise, but Herdman seems to be working miracles for TFC....

Whitecaps FC acquire Canadian midfielder Ralph Priso from Colorado Rapids

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday that the club has acquired Canadian midfielder Ralph Priso from Colorado Rapids in exchange for up to $150,000 in conditional 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM), as well as the later of Vancouver’s current two first-round selections, and their natural third-round selection, in the MLS SuperDraft 2025. The later first-round pick will be either Vancouver or LAFC’s natural selection.

Whitecaps 3   Dallas 1

A very productive first half in which all the goals were scored followed by a controlled second half results in a Whitecaps win.

A tidbit from the commentators:  Vancouver won 4 away games all last season.  They have now won their first 2 away games this season.

Can't say enough about the vision of Gauld on Laborda's goal. A lot of guys would have tried to force a shot in that situation and almost certainly have it blocked. Instead, RG somehow knew his center back was coming in behind him, so he ran a perfect dummy.....

Smart, smart, footballer.....

Not sure if anyone has heard, but MLS has reduced Vanni's suspension by two games. He has one more to sit out and then he'll be back when the 'Caps visit the Timbers in Portland....

Just noticed that today's Whitecaps game against Salt Lake (4:30pm) is available for free on Apple TV.

(And I'm beginning to wonder why I paid for MLS Season Pass.  So far, all four Whitecaps games this season have been available for free either on network tv or on Apple tv.)

Vancouver 1     RSL  2

An entertaining game.  Kreilach scored against his old team to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.  But RSL came back for the win.  And RSL deserved the win - they were the better team on the night.  Constantly pressuring the Caps, they played like they were the home team.

So after four games the Caps have gotten 6 points from two away games and 1 point from two home games.  Kinda the reverse of what you would expect.

Whitecaps 3  Portland 2

Well, that could have been worse.  Whitecaps come out flying and take a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Gauld and Fafa.  Then at half time - I don't know.  Do the teams change jerseys?  Does the Portland coach ream his team out and they come out with extra energy?  Do the Caps simply fall back into a defensive mode of play?  Regardless, Portland dominated the second half and tied the score at 2-2.  It looked like another game where the Caps were going to throw away points only to be bailed out by a late goal by Raposo.

Up next - Toronto.

Davies is under contract with Bayern until June 2025.  Any sale this summer, and the Whitecaps will get 10 to 30 percent.  If he goes for $50 million, that's another $5 to $15 million the Caps are set to pocket.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/mls/article/vancouver-whitecaps-stand-to-profit-if-bayern-munich-sells-alphonso-davies/

Vancouver Whitecaps stand to profit if Bayern Munich sells Alphonso Davies

Count the Vancouver Whitecaps among those watching Alphonso Davies' future with Bayern Munich with interest.

The Whitecaps will benefit from any future transfer, thanks to a sell-on clause negotiated in the Canadian star's sale to the German powerhouse in July 2018. At the time, the Whitecaps said the fixed transfer fee and "additional compensation" could total more than US$22 million, a then-record for the league.

A Whitecaps spokesman confirmed that the transfer agreement included the MLS team getting a percentage of the transfer fee if Bayern sells him. The spokesman declined to detail the sell-on percentage, but with Davies linked to a move to Real Madrid worth in excess of $50 million it could prove to be a generous return.

Clubs can negotiate to include a sell-on percentage in a transfer deal. While there is no set scale, typically the range is 10 to 20 per cent, according to one agent who does not represent Davies, or 10 per cent to 30 per cent "on the high end," according to an MLS GM not with Vancouver.

Talk of a move to Madrid has escalated in recent weeks amid reports of an impasse in contract terms on a new deal with Bayern. Davies, now 23, signed a two-year contract extension with the German side in April 2020 that runs through June 30, 2025.

Bayern Munich sports director Max Eberl said last month that the club had made its final offer to Davies to extend his contract.

"I can say we made Alphonso a very concrete, appreciative offer,” Eberl told the Sport Bild magazine. “At some point in life you have to say yes or no.”

Spanish reports suggest Davies has already reached an agreement with Real Madrid on personal terms, but Eberl said the Spanish league leader had not been in touch. Bayern could ask for a fee if Davies were to leave the club at the end of this season.

"No club wants to lose players for free," Eberl said when he was introduced by Bayern in February.

Reports in Europe have suggested that while Real Madrid is interested in Davies, and vice versa, it does not want to pay 40 million euros (C$58.5 million) to sign him this summer. The Spanish club reportedly is prepared to wait another year to land Davies on a free transfer if a deal cannot be made with Bayern.

In July 2016, a 15-year-old Davies signed a homegrown player contract with the Whitecaps, becoming the third-youngest in history to sign an MLS deal. He finished out the 2018 MLS season with the Whitecaps, joining Bayern in January 2019 an 18-year-old.

Davies, one of the fastest players in the Bundesliga, has played 185 games for Bayern with nine goals and 27 assists. He has won the Bundesliga title five times (2019, '20, '21, '22 and '23), the DFL Supercup three times (2020, '21 and '22), the DFB Cup twice (2019 and '20,) as well as the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup(all in 2020).

Davies has been named Canada Soccer Player of the Year four times (2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022) and CONCACAF Player of the Year twice (2021 and 2022).

He has won 45 caps for Canada with 16 goals and was a member of Canada's team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he scored Canada's first-ever goal at the men's soccer showcase in a 4-1 loss to Croatia.

By agreeing to a larger sell-on fee, a buying club can sometimes bring down the purchase price of a player, according to the MLS GM.

"Depending how much time a player has been with your club, how much time you've invested in the player, you might ask for more or less of the sell-on percentage," said the GM. "And it also depends how aggressive the buying club is with the money that they're willing to outlay up front."

MLS clubs retain 95 per cent of transfer revenues with five per cent going to the league (which doesn't distinguish between guaranteed, conditional or sell-on, but just takes five percent of any/all of those funds).

In some cases, the club receives 100 per cent of all transfer revenues until it has recouped its "‘out of pocket" expenses to acquire the player in question. The 95/5 split applies to any remaining transfer revenue.

Before the 2023 season, that 95/5 split was also applied to homegrown players. Previously, teams retained 100 per cent of a homegrown player's transfer revenue.

Because the Davies transfer to Bayern came before that, the Whitecaps will keep 100 per cent of whatever they make from the sell-on provision.

Whitecaps 4   Toronto 0

A nice win by our boys.   The dominated the first half and came away with a 2-0 lead.   Then, at the beginning of the second half, Toronto showed signs of life.  It looked like another of those games where the momentum simply flips during half-time.   But the Caps recovered their poise and scored another two.

The forward line of Gauld, White and Fafa looked very good.

Next up:  LA Galaxy.    That should be a real test to see just where this version of the Whitecaps is at.

LAG 3    Whitecaps 1

The Whitecaps had their chances.  Or, at least, Brian White had his chances.  He scored the Caps lone goal but could have had a hat trick.

Otherwise, the better team on the night won the game.   The Caps played their defensive style in the first half, hoping to score on the counter.  In the second, more entertaining half, the Caps were more aggressive.  But while the first half ended 0-0, the second half ended 1-3.  So maybe the defensive posture was the way to go.

Next up:  Seattle.
