Wish we had a smaller Stadium with a grass field, BC Place is old and cavernous…

The owner tried to get that waterfront stadium built but government got in the way. Would have been so cool having the field from those plans. Grass with 30,000 seats and big views of the mountains.

When a record-breaking crowd fills BC Place on Saturday they won't be seeing superstar Lionel Messi play, according to a statement from the Vancouver Whitecaps.

More than 50,000 tickets have already been sold for the match against Inter Miami CF – which the Whitecaps say represents a club record for the MLS era.

Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster said he has been told that Messi, along with fellow former FC Barcelona stars Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets, won’t be travelling to Vancouver.

"Unfortunately, we have no control over who plays for our opponent, and it was important for us to communicate to our fans as soon as possible,“ a Thursday statement from Shuchster said.

Was expecting this since they announced the game as should have those that bought tickets. The stars and specially their teams won’t risk injury on the turf.

That was the risk people took.  This isn't the first time that this has happened.   It's sad when you realize that there are other clubs who have artificial turf.  If he plays on those pitches, Vancouver should protest.

Bummer.  And it's bad enough that Messi stays away.  But Suarez and Busquets as well?  That's a slap in the face and a kick in the pants.  It's like Miami is saying:  We can beat you even without three of our main stars.  And they might.   But I hope the Whitecaps feed off this and come out flying.

Can't blame them though.  Time to put a real field in BC Place now that the roof can be retracted.  I feel bad for the fans who bought tickets though.

It is not about the turf. Messi literally played on similar turf on Boston. Sounds like he just didn't want to fly to Van.

He has played on those pitches. At the very least he could have made the trip and done warm up for fans to at least get  a glimpse along with suarez and busquets. what a fucking joke.

My mom got my nephew and I tickets to go for his birthday. we are going out for dinner before so I don't think a free kids meal is going to make up for it. I will be taking advantage of the 50% overpriced beers though..

What's sad is that tomorrow night should have been a soccer celebration in Vancouver.   The largest ever MLS Whitecaps crowd.  A mega-star on the pitch.  Half the crowd cheering for the Whitecaps, half the crowd cheering for Miami.

Instead we have the makings of a fiasco.  There are going to be thousands of pissed off fans in attendance.  If the Whitecaps come out flat like they have in the last few games and lose 1-0 in a boring game, it'll be a major hit to their brand.

I can't blame Tata Martino for looking out for his own team although I suspect he and Miami will be booed lustily throughout the game.

A major missed opportunity which might be somewhat salvaged if the Whitecaps can regain some form and put a 3-0 or 4-0 thumping on Miami.

Donnie & Dhali address the Messi situation:

Donnie is right

MLS has no idea what they're doing in regards to growing the game.

The most popular global game, yet arguably 6th or 7th most popular in North America due to the inability of MLS

Whitecaps 1    Miami 2

Well, at least they scored a goal.  Granted it was a penalty kick (and a very dumb penalty kick given up by a Miami defenseman who bodychecked Fafa in the penalty area for no good reason) but at least they weren't shut-out.

Actually, putting aside the whole Messi controversy, it was an entertaining game.  As expected, the crowd booed Miami for the first few minutes of the game.  And one of the biggest cheers of the night was when they announced that J T Miller was in attendance.

Both Miami goals were well done.  The team has depth, no doubt about it.  As one of the commentators said, if Campana (one of the goal-scorers) was on any other MLS team, he'd be the star of the team.  As it is, he's one of the supporting actors in Miami.

The Caps, meanwhile, did their usual thing.  A lot of good build-up, some nice passing and then no finish.  Frustrating to watch.  They did come close to tying, though.  Fafa made a nice header that bounced off the post.

Next up: Kansas on Wednesday.

Not really a result that will get those extra fans (who came out to see Messi) to come back. Whitecaps had a huge opportunity to improve their brand and crapped the bed.

The club deserves a proper field to play on.

Whitecaps game was actually quite entertaining. It was a good atmosphere, with over 51,000 fans in attendance.

We enjoyed a lot of half-priced food and beverages. Everyone at the game will get a free ticket for a future game.

My first experience in BC Place was a Whitecaps game in 1983, the year the dome opened. Over 50,000 there - we were the very last row behind the net (think we played Seattle Sounders). Tino Lettieri looked like a speck in net

The NASL had the most intriguing method for awarding points in the standings....

As I recall, 6 points for a win and 1 extra point for each goal scored up to a maximum of 3 extra points?
