[GDT] Around the NHL [February 2024]

In retrospect, it would be absolutely beautiful if the Wild could beat out the Oilers for the last playoff spot, by one or two points.

That would make that debacle of a game this week a lot easier to swallow.

Ah yes, nothing can be more Flames-like than to start winning games left and right just as they're about to completely clean house.  Lindholm and Zadorov are already gone, and the rest of that blueline is about to get wiped before the deadline.  Hanifin gives fans a hattrick as a parting gift - not bad.  Tanev is 100% gone, Marky is maybe gone?  And yet, here they are once again desperately fighting for a playoff spot (and likely failing).  Flames fans know this narrative - it happens to them every year.

Interesting article in the athletic about Winnipeg, apparently they are really struggling to sell enough season tickets, even with the recent success. Third lowest attendance in the league this year according to the article.

Has a city ever lost a franchise twice?

If anything this may push Calgary further towards looking at a retool, they're playing competitive hockey

May be a mushy middle team, but they'll still have to sell

Fortunately trading both Hanifin and Tanev would probably be enough to see them slide, I'm not sure they're set either way on Marky, depends on what teams offer imo

Here's the thing though - even with all those guys they're a mediocre team that can't consistently get wins throughout the season.  Without Marky, Hanifin, and Tanev... what does that team even look like?  Dustin Wolf as their starter??
