RWJC
Philadelphia Flyers Interested In Ottawa’s Shane Pinto September 18th, 2023 at 10:58am CST • By Gabriel Foley The Fourth Period’s Anthony Di Marco shared that the Philadelphia Flyers made an offer on unsigned Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto. The offer would have also sent Mathieu Joseph, who makes $2.95MM for the next three years, to Philadelphia alongside Pinto as a cap dump. No return from Philadelphia is mentioned, although Di Marco notes that it would’ve been a roster player. He also shares that Philadelphia has, “kind of moved on” after not receiving a prompt response from Ottawa. Shane Pinto’s contract negotiations have quickly become news worth following, as little progress has been made in finding a deal. Both Di Marco and Elliotte Friedman, in his 32 Thoughts podcast, agree that Ottawa’s preference is still to re-sign Pinto. But Friedman noted that Ottawa is aware any trade involving Pinto would return a quality player. And that’s the real challenge. While few teams in the league are in a position to take on more cap, especially any potential cap dump that may need to be associated with the deal, Pinto is a player worth finding room for. The 22-year-old centerman scored 20 goals and 35 points while appearing in all 82 games last season – a defiant rookie showing. Friedman remains confident that, following this strong season, a market value contract for Pinto would carry a cap hit of around $2.5MM. That price coupled with Joseph’s cap dump would equate to roughly $5.5MM that any potential suitor would need to make room for. There’s also the matter of what a fair trade return is for a player of Pinto’s quality. Friedman and co-host Jeff Marek discuss the Boston Bruins as another team that could be interested but are likely out of any true conversations given their cap situation and lack of expendable assets. With training camp looming, movement with Pinto is likely right around the corner. But whether a new deal with come with Ottawa or a new team is yet to be seen. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2023/09/philadelphia-flyers-interested-in-ottawas-shane-pinto.html#ref=home Edited September 18, 2023 by RWJC
AatuD2
I wouldn't regard Joseph as a cap dump. Pendulum has swung way too far towards cap space above all else.

It's not a cap dump in that he's overpaid, he's a cap dump in that they need cap and he is the victim of being moved for it.

Coconuts
The gulf between the Ottawa Senators and restricted free agent Shane Pinto widened this week. According to several sources, the player was disappointed with a recent offer in the one-year, $1M range. Pinto is believed to be seeking a salary in the $2.5M range. He could, in theory, ask for a trade, but those same sources were adamant that has not happened, that he prefers to stay and the Senators have made it very clear they want to keep him. They see Pinto’s potential. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/gap-widens-between-senators-shane-pinto-in-contract-talks/
KesLord
I'd trade for this kid and paid him 2.5M. 20 goals at 21 years old, and a RH Center could be exactly what we need. Raty for him.
JeremyCuddles
Just trade a 3rd rounder to dump Kubalik and sign the kid to a 1 year, 2.5mil deal. They have two 1st rounders and three 4th rounders this coming draft. You can go without next years 3rd round pick to get a kid you believe in signed for one season. Edit: What kind of cap management spends all their cap in free agency before locking up their RFAs? Tarasenko signing is kind of wacky. Did they really expect Pinto to sign for 1mil? I think Peter the great did that in Boston with Phil Kessel. But that's a great point you made. One would have thought Pinto would have been in the long term plans rather than make a one-year signing to VT.
RWJC
Sens, RFA Pinto in 'crunch time right now' The Ottawa Senators continue to work on signing restricted free agent Shane Pinto as the season draws closer to puck drop next week. Pinto is the highest-profile unsigned restricted free agent remaining in the league after the Anaheim Ducks signed Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale to three-year deals this week. "Well, we’re in crunch time right now," TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston said on Insider Trading Thursday. "And the Ottawa Senators are certainly here working on Shane Pinto, trying to get it done in advance of the season. And this is a really tough one. One thing that Shane Pinto shares with Jamie Drysdale is that he is two years from arbitration eligibility, and that makes it difficult to value what could be a second year in a deal, makes a player less inclined to sign a one-year contract. I think that’s partly what slowed up the process in Anaheim. "Where things get real here is on Tuesday. Because as of this coming Tuesday, that’s when players around the league will start being paid for their services. That’s when he would be first missing the ability to earn money. And of course, Wednesday is the opening of the Senators’ season. So, they’re going to try to get it done ahead of that." Pinto recorded 20 goals and 35 points in 82 games last season, his first full year in the NHL. He appeared in just five games in 2021-22 due to a shoulder injury. The 22-year-old centre was selected by the Senators at the top of the second round in the 2019 draft. According to CapFriendly, the Senators are up to $1.7 million in cap space after waiving several players this week, though that number is based on carrying a roster of just 18 players. Ottawa has more than $5 million in dead cap this season after retaining salary on Matt Murray and their previous buyouts of Bobby Ryan, Colin White, and Michael Del Zotto. The Senators' regular season will begin on the road next Wednesday as they take on the Carolina Hurricanes. https://www.tsn.ca/ottawa-senators-rfa-shane-pinto-in-crunch-time-right-now-1.2017329?tsn-amp
