[Report] Canucks re-sign Pettersson to 8 year contract @ $11.6M

Because players are allowed to negotiate weeks prior just not sign until UFA. Its not boilerplate, its also not a billion dollar merger.

Actually it is. There is a standard player contract template, created and provided by the NHLPA that is used. I was chatting with a lawyer who works with some player agents about it. It’s a very quick process. It didn’t always used to be that way, but since the salary cap came in with the limitations and structured approach for bonuses, there’s not a lot to negotiate. Total salary, term,  the annual distribution structure, and any bonus structure of which there’s only a few options and already composed, just a matter of plugging the numbers in.

My guess is 10.82m I think he will leave about a mill per on the table for the chance to win with his friends. He knows the great bargains Miller, Huggy, Demko are on and the great opportunity they all have together. If he's too greedy none of them will get a cup.

Honestly ask your self, what would you do in his place?

After all JT is the heart and soul of this team… proving his worth game in game out - unlike Petey and his disappearing act…

Maybe he's been blinded the last bit by dolla signs. If he signs in the next couple days I hope he will turn it around

Meh, I don't care either way, if we are talking about Miller or Demko or Hughes, I would be thouroughly concerned about the outcome. If he wants to stick around at a team friendly deal, great, if he wants more? Then I would rather spend that Cap elsewhere. We don't need to be top heavy we need to be balanced throughout our roster.

I see Miller/Boeser as our top line and Lindholm our #2 C, I see our biggest need is an offensive winger with size and physicality for the playoffs.

We are still a little light on the size and physicality and this is a concern.

Petey is great in the regular season, no doubt, but I am not too interested in that ,been down that road before(Sedins,Nazzy,Morrison).

I’d go 10.5-11 leaves more room to sign players, less scrutiny on yourself especially in the Vancouver market and Miller, Hughes, Demko all on team friendly deals who are carrying the team without you.  Also sets the tone for everyone to keep taking a discount to win cups.

I am with Tocc when it comes to Petey - the guy has just been OK - and he disappears for stretches at a time - we honestly should move him for someone who’s consistent - someone who’s tough - someone who competes - who might not have as much skill as Petey does but at least the guy shows up game in game out - gets the job done - and doesn’t float…

petey's mom called him and told him get it done...

I know you're joking but it would make my year if this was the one prediction/comment in this thread that ended up being true.

We are lucky to have one JT. He is a rare player. You can't just go out to the supermarket and find another highly skilled power forward. If you get a player like that you're very lucky.

Thats the trade off though, super skilled and you usually get less physicality and consistency.

You get too much of that and you end up like Toronto, too far the other way and you almost win the Cup like Vegas their first year. Add a couple of skilled players to that group and then you win the Cup like Vegas last year.

thought I’d make a new thread because the other thread is congested with a lot of speculation and it’s well over 130 pages.

Cmon Petey!!!!!

Pettersson is a superstar? He's the 13th leading scorer in points per game and is probably the 3rd or 4th most important player on his team.

Pettersson is a good player, but this "superstar" or "one of the best players in the league" stuff is such hyperbole.

He's a star. And top 10 in scoring. Watch him pop off after the signing. He's clearly distracted from the speculation. Just get it over with and start going on a heater.

Once his contract is signed I bet we get our old Petey back. I need to see more smiles from him. I hate how distant he has been all year.

And allow mgmt to start planning with other UFAs...would be great to have done prior to the TDL so mgmt has full line of sight on the cap

Based on his play this year, I'd agree but based on what I've seen Petey do pervious including bubble playoffs, I would say he has another couple of gears. I hope we see him go off after he signs his contract

I can’t help but wonder what JT is going to do or how he’s gonna respond if we pay Petey more than him

JT Miller was extremely happy to sign an 8 year, $56M contract. I don't think he cares if Petey makes more money. Also, I've mentioned this repeatedly, but Petey's actual salary for 2023-2024 is $10.25M and JT's is $8M. So technically Petey is already making more than JT and it hasn't seemed to bother Miller at all.
