"

James Sikking, who starred as a hardened police lieutenant on “Hill Street Blues” and as the titular character's kindhearted dad on “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” has died at 90.

Sikking died of complications from dementia, his publicist Cynthia Snyder said in a statement Sunday evening.

Born the youngest of five children on March 5, 1934 in Los Angeles, his early acting ventures included an uncredited part in Roger Corman's “Five Guns West” and a bit role in an episode of “Perry Mason.” He also secured guest spots in a litany of popular 1970s television series, from the action-packed “Mission: Impossible,” “M.A.S.H.” “The F.B.I.,” “The Rockford Files,” “Hawaii Five-O” and “Charlie's Angels” to “Eight is Enough” and “Little House on the Prairie.”

“Hill Street Blues” would debut in 1981, a fresh take on the traditional police procedural. Sikking played Lt. Howard Hunter, a clean-cut Vietnam War veteran who headed the Emergency Action Team of the Metropolitan Police Department in a never-named city.

The acclaimed show was a drama, but Sikking's character's uptight nature and quirks were often used to comic effect. Sikking based his performance on a drill instructor he'd had at basic training when military service cut through his time at the University of California, Los Angeles, from which he graduated in 1959.

Bob Newhart, legendary comedian, dead at 94

Bob Newhart, whose stammering, deadpan unflappability carried him to stardom as a standup comedian and later in television and movies, has died, according to a statement from his longtime publicist Jerry Digney. He was 94.

Digney said Newhart died in Los Angeles on Thursday morning after a series of short illnesses. He called the star’s passing an “end of an era in comedy.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.

EDIT - NYT was obviously more prepared for this sad event than was CNN:

I remember trying to perfect the Willie Mays basket catch as a Little Leaguer. How many times did we watch Willie drop in from center field with his glove at waist level and catch a fly. Aaron, Mantle, Marris,Yogi, Drysdale were all greats but it was Willie who stayed with me.

Mays was the best rounded out of anyone to ever play the game other than Ruth/Ohtani.

From the NY Times article:

“I think the whole awards-giving process needs rethinking,” Mr. Newhart wrote in his autobiography. “For starters, they should bestow lifetime achievement awards at the beginning of a performer’s career. This way the person can still enjoy it while he is young, rather than giving it to him when he has lost most of his marbles and is standing onstage wondering why all these overdressed people are applauding.”   :classic_biggrin:

RIP Bob.   Thanks for the laughs.

"Trailblazing British blues and rock musician John Mayall has died at the age of 90. Known as ‘The Godfather of British Blues,’ Mayall’s death marks the end of an era for the blues and rock music scenes he helped shape. His passing was announced by his family on Facebook in the early hours of July 23, 2024: ‘It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by loving family' (Picture: Getty Images)

...........

His band, Blues Breakers, which he founded in 1963 in London, is remembered as one of the most important musical groups of all time. Members of the Blues Breakers over the years included: Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Aynsley Dunbar, and future Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. The band’s 1966 album Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton is often hailed as a seminal work in the blues-rock genre

-----------------------

So many great albums, and terrific songs

Here is one about the loss of Jimi

And a beauty with Mavis Staples- starts with a telephone message from Mick Taylor- saying he's not coming to the recording session-This whole album is awesome.

Guy was touring well into his late 80s

Death sucks.

Very sad news that Don Cherry's daughter Cindy died suddenly at 67 years old. She was a strong advocate for animal welfare. A loving sister who donated a kidney to her brother Tim while they were in college. On occasion I had tuned into Don Cherry's podcast where Cindy and Tim talked hockey with Don. RIP

Sad, but I find it strange he outlived her, given his age.

I was 13 and a hippy in training when this happened.  Years later when I was a punk in training I wrote half a verse of an anti war song about it.  (It wasn't until years later I realized I've always been a beatnik.)

Legendary Puerto Rican golfer, Chi Chi Rodriguez has passed away at 88.....

https://www.sportsnet.ca/golf/article/chi-chi-rodriguez-hall-of-fame-golfer-known-for-antics-on-the-greens-dies-at-88/

For those not familiar with him, Chi Chi was one of the most likeable players the tour ever saw. He was also very talented.

There's a classic video of Chi Chi bouncing a ball on the flat of a pitching wedge, performing tricks, like behind the back while saying, "The only other guy I know who can do this is my brother......and his name is Jesus...."

RIP Chi Chi....

So long to Jack Russell, lead singer of Great White

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/music/news/jack-russell-former-great-white-singer-dead-at-63/ar-AA1oSUKP?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=11138168b0684b45b7dc6ad6a504ebcf&ei=15

Jack Russell, one of the founding members of Eighties band Great White, has died. He was 63. In a social media post Thursday, Russell's family announced that the glam metal singer died "peacefully" surrounded by his family and friends.

"Jack is loved and remembered for his sense of humor, exceptional zest for life, and unshakeable contribution to rock and roll where his legacy will forever thrive," read the statement. "His family asks for privacy at this time."

Although the cause of Russell's death was not revealed, the singer announced in July that he would be stepping away from touring after being diagnosed with Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy, a rare neurodegenerative disorder.

"I am unable to perform at the level I desire and at the level you deserve," Russell said at the time. "Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love, and support."

I'd guess Jack died at the hour he decided.

My Mom had multiple system atrophy, and was eligible for the M. a.i.d. program. I'm thinking he had the same typed of assistance.

I think you're right. Lewy body dementia was the same as Robin Williams almost exactly ten years ago. Russell was doing gigs as recently as April. So gone in August is very sudden. I was a big fan back in the day. RIP Jack.

Goodbye to Phil Donahue, legendary t.v. host:

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/entertainment/tv/phil-donahue-whose-pioneering-daytime-talk-show-launched-an-indelible-television-genre-has-died/ar-AA1p3GGe?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=8c5698565afb442788d9ef0452cceb7d&ei=49

"Phil Donahue, whose pioneering daytime talk show launched an indelible television genre that brought success to Oprah Winfrey, Montel Williams, Ellen DeGeneres and many others, has died. He was 88.

NBC's “Today” show, citing family members, said Donahue died Sunday after a long illness.

Dubbed “the king of daytime talk,” Donahue was the first to incorporate audience participation in a talk show, typically during a full hour with a single guest.

“Just one guest per show? No band?” he remembered being routinely asked in his 1979 memoir, “Donahue, My Own Story.”

The format set “The Phil Donahue Show” apart from other interview shows of the 1960s and made it a trendsetter in daytime television, where it was particularly popular with female audiences.

Later renamed “Donahue,” the program launched in Dayton, Ohio, in 1967. Donahue’s willingness to explore the hot-button social issues of the day emerged immediately, when he featured atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair as his first guest. He would later air shows on feminism, homosexuality, consumer protection and civil rights, among hundreds of other topics.
