Popular Post Darius
Hughes been struggling a bit, probably the result of being overplayed combined with the relatively condensed schedule. So much of their success depends on him being on every night. Saw lots of mistakes from him tonight. The rest here will do him good. Honestly think he props up Hronek alot so when Hughes is off it brings down Hronek. Lindholm needs to be in the top 6 to succeed. Hes a 50-60pt defensive minded centre, not a miracle man that can turn a line featuring Bains into some kind of scoring threat. I dont think he can be judged by this. Im not sure why Tocchet moved away from the EP/Hogs/Lindholm line - probably because Joshua is injured and this has mixed up the lines a bit. Joshua cant come back soon enough. Resets that third line and puts the other forwards back to where they belong. Could he be such a catalyst? Kinda like when Salo was out of the lineup back in the day the juggernaut Sedin/Kesler team was reduced to a .500 team. Soucy back in the lineup means less of Cole and or Myers . Those two are ok when their minutes are reduced, or less exposed. That penalty meltdown in Minnesota sent this team on the downward spiral imho - practically every good team has gone through one or is currently in one. Bains looks to be defensively reliable, or smart enough not to make critical mistakes. Thats why Tocchet likes him. But if you put Podz in that spot tonight, where he was right in front of the net with a clear shot, i suspect there would have been at least a threatening shot made. wai_lai416
the shooting % is coming back down to earth.. and the sv% have taken a beating.. we were due for the regression.. just didn't expect it to be this bad.. i can live with good hard effort with pucks not going in the net.. but we ain't getting much shots.. and everything from the other team seems to end up in the net... perhaps demko is worn out already 5 of the 11 games this month he have .900 or lower sv%.. demko getting worned out have been my worries.. outside of last season where he was injuried.. since he's been the starter on the team.. he seems to start struggling in late feb into march around the 45-50 game mark.. obviously this slump isn't on demko.. but if we have average demko the rest of the way.. we are going to be in tough.. after this tough month.. i dont think demko have a chance at the vezina.. and hughes for the norris is a big question mark now as he have struggled as bad as EP have since the all star break 1

Popular Post JamesB
Losing 5-1 sounds bad. And it was pretty bad, but not as bad as the score looks. Here are some of other stats. Canucks led in all-strength Corsi 60-38, in shots 23-20, in scoring chances 24-19 and they even led slightly in expected goals: 1.88 - 1.82. Based on expected goals, the game was pretty even, so how did the Canucks lose so badly? 1. First is timing. In a low-event game the Canucks were behind 3-1 halfway through the 3rd period against a tight defensive team so they started taking chances. As often happens, the result was giving up a couple of high danger chances the other way and LA scored on both. As the chasing team Canucks out-chanced and outshot LA but lost ground on the scoreboard. 2. Goaltending. Demmer has an ugly stat line with 5 goals on 19 shots. As the expected goals number is 1.82, the goals above expected is 3.18, which is a very bad number. Both of the first two LA goals were on medium danger shots. One was from just inside the blueline and the other was from a bad angle where it looked like Demmer overplayed the short side. The two cross-ice tap ins and the breakaway were all grade A chances but NHL goalies still make saves on those plays more than 2/3 of the time. Tonight, it looked like LA buried every good chance they had. It might be time to give Demmer a bit more rest. He has had a good season, but his play has definitely been worse after the all-star break. 3. The stars fizzled. Boeser scored a nice PP goal, but he contributed to two LA goals. He skated too slowly to the bench for a change on the first LA goal and Lafferty did not have time to reach the shooter, although he was close. If Boeser hustles on that play I doubt that a goal scores. He was also slow on 4th goal. By coasting back instead of skating hard he changed what should have been a 2 on 2 into a 2-on-1. break. Hughes and Hronek both struggled and were both -3. On the "breakaway" LA goal (the 5th goal), Moore just skated between them and then beat Demko. Hughes made a bad pinch on the 4th goal and Hronek's penalty in the 3rd period after the Canucks pulled to within 1 was also a big negative as LA scored on the PP. Petey obviously had a bad game, going -3 and making a critical give-away on the second goal and lost a key puck battle on one of the late goals. And he was visibly frustrated at times. Miller was the best of the stars, but made a major mistake on the 5th LA goal. 4. On the plus side, some of the other guys looked good, even though they did not get "rewarded" with points. Lindholm and Garland both had good games after a poor game against Pittsburgh. Hoggy was very good and so was Mikheyev. Those four guys were all unlucky not to get on the board. And Myers, after getting criticized (deservedly) for a costly penalty against Pittsburgh, had a good game. Juulsen was also good -- going 24 to 9 in Corsi. Overall, the Canucks are obviously in something of a slump but, like a lot of slumps, bad luck is playing a role. My biggest worry is Petey. I wonder if the contract situation is getting to him. (And all the current talk is probably not helping.) I am also wondering about fatigue for Demmer, Hughes and Hronek. The Canucks obviously need to come back with a good game against Anaheim on Sunday. Edited March 1 by JamesB 2 2 5

hockeyfan-observer
I don't buy the reason for their recent sub-standard results because of the All Star game events - a lot of the other stars present at the ASG don't seem to have any problems. Personally, I think they are having some recent problems with the bigger, more physical opponents who cut down their space + time. You look at this years results and its been the Wild / Vegas / Jets / Flyers / Blues and now the Kings that have given them the most problems - JR + company will need to decide before the TDL - if they want to go with some additional size in the 3-4th lines or add more skill to offset the heavier checking which will get even more prevalent in the playoffs. They really need to have a balance lineup though that can play any style - I'm leaning towards some muscle in the bottom lines - no need for a big name - just someone who can grind it out and possibly give some space to their other players. Will be glad when Joshua returns as without him, opposing teams seem to have had their way with the team. 1
