Popular Post VegasCanuck
So, this post isn't directly hockey related, just wanted to say that I appreciate you guys. I was sitting last night, watching the game with my dad as his life wound down. I was watching, doing my best to give him play by play and hoping he was still hearing it at least. Even when we disagree, I still appreciate everyone here and the fun distraction this board provides. Thank you again to @Ribs and the rest of the moderator team for keeping the board going and giving it new life. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and that you're all appreciated, even when you disagree with me, at least we're talking hockey and unwinding. He passed away about an hour after the game last night, but at least they won for him! 22 69 7

Popular Post Jess
It's times like these that make me realize the value in online communities like what we have here. Some people scoff at online communites and relationships but although they're no replacement for in-person relationships, they can and do hold very significant value in our lives. All the best @VegasCanuck and glad you were able to be there for your dad down the stretch. 8 1 1 2 4

Popular Post Ghostsof1915
Sorry Vegas. I was with my Dad when he passed. It was so tough. My friend Peter is losing against Cancer. They are trying to keep him as comfortable they can at VGH. He's a great friend. I don't want him to go, but I don't want him suffering either. FU Cancer. 4 4

Yeah, it's rough. My dad had Parkinson's and dementia. Was a lifetime propagator of Rhododendrons and other plants and he thought for the last couple of years that he was just going to get better and be able to get back out to the Arboretum in Langley which he championed the creation of. He just wanted to be back doing what he had done all his life and so, it's hard, but it's better this way. He was suffering just looking outside and not being able to get back out there. 3
Popular Post VegasCanuck
What's really funny is, he had become unresponsive Friday night, labored breathing etc. I got there just after 1pm on Saturday and started talking hockey at him and to the amazement of everyone, I started getting barely intelligible grunts that progressed to sitting up in a wheelchair late Saturday night and fully conversational again. Didn't last though, he started falling hard again through Sunday. Never underestimate the power of hockey on true fans! 9 2 2
Popular Post RWMc1
I just found out yesterday that I lost my nephew Mark. He had tumors removed from his stomach but I guess they came back. At least he doesn't have to suffer through the pain anymore. He was in his early forties. Him and his brother have always had a special place in my heart. Words can't really console my sister. I'm crying as I type this. VegasCanuck, I hope you are doing well and have a support system. I'm sorry that I didn't offer my condolences when I first posted this. I was wrapped up in my own grief. After re-reading this I realized that I made it seem like my sister was crying inconsolably. On the contrary, she was overly stoic. I just know her and could tell she was really bottling it up. We both were beaten with sticks regularly as children. No crying allowed or it wouldn't stop. I almost forced down the tears until I realized what I was doing. I'm in my sixties and still do it. I allowed myself to cry and unashamedly admitted to it. Edited March 16 by RWMc1 4
Popular Post Dom
Sorry for your loss. Prayers to you. We are all human and are going through our own things, nobody should be attacked here, regardless of their views or statements. My grandmother was diagnosed with cancer in early October, and had surgery that successfully removed it. It is now March, and the cancer has returned. I do not believe she will be around much longer. My grandfather left us early last summer as well. 2 1

You just never know how long you've got before that cancer or virus or old age or bus is going to hit you. We just try and have as much fun as possible in the time we're here and try and make a positive difference in people's lives. 1

nobigneil
Sorry for your loss Vegas. I lost my mom on the eve of game 7 against Chicago in 2011 to brain cancer. Even though I never posted much it was always nice to come on here and read what others had to say was comforting in a way to keep my mind off of things, which why I'm so happy CDC lives on thanks to many peoples efforts. At least you were able to be with him in his final moments, it's tough but it does get better 2

Youre going to be in a massive amount of pain obviously but you will progressively get better week to week month to month. One day the pain will be replaced by the beautiful memory of you sitting beside him as the game was on. At least that's what my last memories morphed into...something very special shared between my Mom and I. Despite it being agonizing to see her slip away. When she passed, I really didn't have anyone to lean on and was very isolated. I had to take care of my kids and my Dad but I could've really used a community like this one. It really is special and I'm happy that you have your family here to share with. We're all in this thing together. Stealth ribs is the absolute best....he kept us going and this was all his doing. We need each other as humans. That's the truth. Please take care. 6 2 1

My mom was 4 years ago after a 5 year battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis which is a really horrible way to go. It's really hard to be there for them at the end, but no matter how hard, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. You really come across as an amazing lady! Take care, hope life has normalized for you. 4
