Canada vs USA Part 3: Goalies

Recommended Posts

We really need more up and coming Canadian tenders, we're the weakest we've been in goal in ages

It could very well be Stuart Skinner in net at the next Olympics at this rate

People sleep on Adin Hill. Could be the best one we have. Won a cup with a .932 save percentage. Binnington might be the next best and Hart and Skinner are probably other options.

Either way, it's clear we don't have a bonafide star--just a bunch of guys who've been really good for short stretches but lack consistency. Hill's not elite, but he's maybe been the most consistent at .915 last year regular season, .932 in the playoffs, and now .914 for this season in 32 games. He does lack high workloads to prove he's a full-time starter, but then again, the Olympics are just a fairly short tournament, so consistency over an extended period isn't necessary.

He could fight Fleury for the starter position.  Defeat the enemy with toilet paper/packing peanuts... or chuck water bottles at them.

The fight we were denied

Adin Hill would most likely be the starter for Team Canada.

A platoon goalie.  Starting for Team Canada.  Oof.

Yeah, it's definitely a step down between Canada and the States, since Hellebuyck, Demko and Oettinger all have had 30+ win seasons as the clear #1.
Skinner and Binnington might be the best options we have at this point, along with the Thompson/ Hill platoon in Vegas...

Hill

Binnington

Jarry

Skinner

Ingram

At these tournaments, it’s about implementing systems right away and which goalie can make the big saves at the right time. Any of these goalies will be just fine.

Adin Hill has yet to be trusted as a starter in the NHL though. He had an incredible playoffs after taking over for Brossoit but that's still a small sample size. Until he actually shows he can play well as a starter he's still quite a tier below Hellebuyck and Demko and maybe still below Swayman and Oettinger as well.

There might be some hope for Connor Ingram though as well.

Agreed, though he was certainly the starter in 2023. As I mentioned, the Olympics aren't an 82-game season, so the requirements are different for a goalie to succeed there than in a long regular season.

I just did a closer look at this year's stats and I think based on this year, Binnington is probably our best bet.
