What Are You Listening To ~ Canadian Edition

It was quite incredible listening to William Prince sing this at the Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot Memorial concert at Massey Hall on May 24th.... why this wasn't a much bigger hit is beyond me... an anthem, really.

Go first in the world, go forth with your fears
Remember a price must be paid
Be always too soon, be never too fast
At the time when all bets must be laid
Beware of the darkness, be kind to your children
Remember the woman who waits
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your gate

When you're caught by the gale and you're full under sail
Beware of the dangers below
And the song that you sing should not be too sad
And be sure not to sing it too slow
Be calm in the face of all common disgraces
And know what they're doin' it for
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your door

When you're out on the road and feelin' quite lost
Consider the burden of fame
And he who is wise will not criticize
When other men fail at the game
Beware of strange faces and dark dingy places
Be careful while bending the law
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your door

When you're down in the dumps and not ready to deal
Decide what it is that you need
Is it money or love, is it learning to live
Or is it the mouth you must feed
Be known as a man who will always be candid
On questions that do not relate
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at the gate

And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at the gate....

So, just for fun, I decided to create an "All-Star" band of Canadian artists. The only rule is, you can't use more than one member of the same band. There is a spot for the vocalist, but if any of the other members (guitar, drums, bass & keys) are strong vocalists as well, that would be considered a bonus. The members can be alive or no longer with us, but you can create a lineup of both if you like.

Here's mine:

Vocals - Jim Cuddy

Guitar - Rik Emmet

Bass - Kenny "Spider" Sinnaeve

Keys - Burton Cummings

Drums - Neal Peart

I thought it would be worthwhile to include a "Songwriter" category as well, but I'm torn between Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot. I'm leaning towards Gord....

Let's see yours.....

Warning---- I will not be held to my 5 minutes of thought  list:

Vocals - I want to hear the band together,  before final decision- contenders are Ron Tabak, Bill Henderson, Susan Jacks, Darby Mills, Doug Bennett, Colin James, Burton Cummings, Fred Turner.  and a few more--- hardest category to decide imo.

 Slide Guitar - Colin Linden

Acoustic Guitar- Bruce Cockburn

'blues' guitar Colin James-nearly went Bill Henderson

Bass - Fred Turner-- toss up between Fred and Geddy Lee, but with Neil being a super, duper, obvious, choice on drums; Fred takes this slot.

Keys - Burton Cummings

Drums- Neal Peart- easiest category to decide.

Songwriter- Cohen was amazing, Randy Bachman and Burton were great,--- but the best was Gord Lightfoot.
