6of1_halfdozenofother
So glad I caught it yesterday. Looks like tonight might not have any aurora appearances in the Lower Mainland (or if it happens, towards the morning before daybreak).
6of1_halfdozenofother
NOAA is predicting between 2am and 5am as the time when the coronal mass ejection will make its next spurt appear in our sky's magnetic field. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental under "3-day forecast" (UT stands for UTC, which is essentially Greenwich Mean Time, so -7 hours to get PDT). Yet, with a slight reframing of the query, the response could prove unexpectedly intriguing. According to Scientific American, the answer depends on the framing of the question or the person's point of view, and the answer to how many moons the Earth has could be up to eleven. ----------------------- mal

6of1_halfdozenofother
I was originally going to share this in the vaccine thread, since it's an offshoot of the pandemic thread from the old forum, but because the vaccine thread is now primarily about vaccines, and this article isn't, I guess this Science thread is the next closest approximation. https://theconversation.com/masks-work-our-comprehensive-review-has-found-229658 Masks work. Of course, the better the fit and the better the filtration method, the higher the efficacy. Cloth masks won't filter much, but an N-95 or other respirator is likely to be very effective in minimizing the likelihood of infection - if worn and used properly. Who knew, eh? excerpt: Quote The bottom line When we looked at RCTs, we found that masks do protect in the community, and N95 respirators (masks made using higher-grade filtration material and designed to fit closely around the face to protect against airborne contaminants) are superior to masks in healthcare workers, especially when respirators were worn continuously at work. Non-RCT evidence also shows that masks work and respirators work better. 1 1
Satchmo
Some of my previous posts will indicate that I am Chicken Little when it comes to the number of satellites in our sky. I am not alone. Megaconstellations of satellites are burning up in our atmosphere. That could have consequences A new study looks at the potential that these satellite burn-ups could have on the recovery of our ozone hole There are an estimated 11,500 tonnes of space objects orbiting Earth, which would include even the smallest pieces around one millimetre in size (likely satellite collisions). But there are far larger objects in space, including spent rocket stages and upwards of 9,000 functioning satellites. More than half of them are SpaceX Starlinks, which provide internet services. As of publication, there are roughly 5,200 Starlink satellites, but SpaceX has plans to put up upwards of 42,000. What goes up eventually has to come down. In the case of Starlink, these satellites have a lifespan of roughly five years, after which they're deorbited. They then burn up in our atmosphere. A new study, published last week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, suggests that the particles left behind could potentially affect our ozone layer. https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/satellites-polluting-atmosphere-1.7239899
