[PGT] Nashville at Vancouver - Game 5

Interesting article by Jeff Paterson.

While I do find his interview questions leading and annoying, he does write a solid article. Quite something to see that Zadorov has been an overall more impactful defenseman than Hronek since the all star break.

That is cuz for a lot of the time the game 5 winner wins the series that night.

Dumb stat. Means nothing.

Well, so far 3 series are over and in each the series was over after game 5 so 100% thus far.

Game 5 is almost always the critical game of a series.  That said, that stat obviously leans heavily towards teams who win in 6.

Ya they just showed it again towards end of the game.. their stat was for series tied 2 - 2.

So 79% of teams wining game 5 of a 2 - 2 tied series wins the series. That makes sense..

It didn't seem legit as an overall stat.

Here are some interesting stats

1) When teams are tied 2-2, the team that wins game 5 goes on to win the series 79% of the time ... WOOHOO DALLAS ... from a commentator calling the Dallas Game

2) When a team is up 3-1, the team leading wins 90.6% of the time ... WOOHHOO GO CANUCKS GO!!

3) When a team is up 3-2, the team leading wins 78.9% of the time ... WOOHOOO GO CANUCKS GO!!

4) When a team was up 3-1 and heads into a game 6, they win 25.6% of the time against all the series ... WOOHOO GO CANUCKS GO!!

MORAL - Canucks should close it out in Nashville on the balance of probabilities. I would hazard a guess that Nashville would prefer to be playing now and instead the extra day should help the Canucks refocus. I would bet donuts against @-dlc- 's Cowbell that the Predators will be finished off. GO CANUCKS GO!

Well played by Nashville to date, not taking anything away from them.

I might get flak for this but Hronek has become an overall defensive liability for quite some time.  He doesn't contribute much anymore on either side of the ice.  His slap shot isn't accurate, nor is it easy to tip.  It's just really fast.  That's not even close to being good enough.

I've been vocal about not giving hronek that kind of money and term, but I think he had a very strong game last night

Well let's see how mature this team is. Can give them a mulligan for being inexperienced in closing out a series (not in the bubble) and yesterday teaching them a lesson in managing emotions.

The better team is the team that won. All the rest is just details. You find a way to win, you were better.

Completely dominated is an absolute joke. Most here see it how it really is.

And this word you throw around..."whataboutism". You do that a lot when people talk about a player having a rough game. You're quick to do a "what about Miller". Insecure and delusional are not really strengthening your case. You talk of wanting honest discussion but it starts with you.

This team's capable of much more than you give them credit for. Experience isn't the golden ticket....momentum and confidence weigh in huge.

If momentum is true, the Nashville has a lot of it heading to game 6.

If the Preds score early in game 6, could be over before it's begun.

He's had a bad series, in my opinion. I can't see how he's getting 8M. There's no way management offers him that. He either signs for what they're wanting him to sign for, or he will be dealt for assets coming back.

Yeah I am on moving Hronek for the money he wants and use it on Zadorov and sign Tanev or the like if possible to play with Hughes as the defensive specialist.

Heck maybe Zadorov can hold the fort with Hughes until Willander is ready.

Win or lose this series, it has been a very good learning experience for this group.  Ideally, they get experience closing out a series and get another one, but even if they lose, they'll understand how hard it is to move on in the post season

Yeah, we'll see if this team has matured. I think they will win on Friday night. I'm almost certain they will have practice tomorrow on Thursday.

But man, they better work on their pp. Because Nashville is not afraid of taking penalties knowing full well we can't seem to score on special teams. There's no fear there. Our PK has been excellent. Our PP? Might as well decline it if they could.

It's that bad.

Momentum is only true if the Canucks are licking their wounds over losing game 5. I doubt they do cause they would have done it a long time ago with losing Demko and DeSmith.

I think Zadorov has to be signed. Hronek has, in my opinion, at the very least, a 'meh' series, if not just bad. He isn't worth 8M. That money could definitely go towards the other UFA's that management wants to resign. Hronek I think could probably get a RHD prospect coming back maybe

I don't either, but he was good last night, for sure.  To me, he's a $6m dman, at best, and I'd rather see them prioritize Zad, Myers and Joshua before Hronek

Nashville definitely has the momentum, imo.  Really, if you go by the flow of play, this series should be over at this point.

Which is integral to any team wanting to go far in the playoffs. The defense hasn’t been the issue at all in the playoffs.

And having the ability to move the puck and generate some offense.

Same. There are some warriors on the forward corps (Miller, Joshua) but a lot of players who aren’t capable of sustaining pressure in the other teams end.

Even Tampa had to get used to the grind of the playoffs which requires dipping into the well of mental fortitude and pain suppression. Really can’t win without taking some lumps. Hughes has taken a lot of lumps, yet came out yesterday looking great. He’s adjusted well. Players like Pettersson haven’t.

True.

it’s a war. Every series a prolonged battle of both physical and mental will.

He needs to watch how Miller deals with it. Better yet, see how Hughes has adapted.

A huge step. Huge. I enjoy how stingy and hard the defense has played.

Pettersson needs to prove he belongs in the postseason before any trades are made.

True Tampa had Teddy Bear aka Maroon. He was awesome for Tampa.

I think Petey has that in him. The desire to go beyond expectations. He will come back next year and be better. He also needs beef on his line. A guy who can make room for him. Number 1 target for the off season in my books.

Once he starts making quicker decisions with the puck under pressure things will start clicking. The building blocks are there with him. He can get there. Especially if they find a proper winger for him.

I honestly think he needs to give less of a shit and give up on the whole “perfection” idea of himself. He is so driven, he’s in his own way. Which he will also eventually overcome. Kinda like Miller like you said lol.

And finally, Silovs…he belongs. Will be really interesting how many more starts he gets with Desmith healthy. But he’s definitely earned the right to continue until he falters.

I only watch elimination games if Canucks are out. I give 0 shit about games 1 to 3 for other teams. To me that is just filler till elimination.

Oh wow I'd watch every game if I could absolutely love the NHL.

If during the regular season we pointed out that Pettersson had only 2 pts (both secondary assists at that) and 7 sog in the past 5 games, there would be accusations left and right of cherry picking.

Turns out, in the playoffs, these small samples actually matter. Consistency matters. Playoffs are exactly why it's important to be able to count on your highest paid players to show up every game.

Some of us had been emphasizing this point all season, to a chorus of "well he's the n-th leading scorer in the league" (for steadily increasing values of n over the course of the season, funnily enough), or "stop cherry picking small samples".

Even if he has a great Game 6 - if he produced in the first 5 games, maybe we could have finished this series in 5 and gotten some much needed rest. Again, it's why the top players have to be able somehow positively impact every game - we haven't seen that from him so far.

He looked a bit better in Game 5. Let's hope he has a great Game 6.

Depending on how hard he sticks to his demands, I'd prefer the assets coming back.......they might be able to recover a 1st round pick, along with some depth
