i dunno how preseason rosters work.. but don't all players under contract that plays in the preseason have to go thru waivers when sent back to the ahl? if so wouldn't colorado just wait till he's on waiver and grab him for free?

Yes.  But Colorado is at the bottom of the list for waivers, so another team could claim him first.  For a late round pick they might want to scoop him up now...

He has indeed been linked to Colorado.  It's a no-brainer for a team that desperately needs an NHL calibee goalie.  Even in that brutal year with us, he put up ordinary numbers you'd expect from a backup.

I'm kind of annoyed we traded assets to get DeSmith when we could've signed Halak again for free.  Then again... I guess since DeSmith has proven himself as a 1B goalie, we can afford to lose Demko and not have the wheels completely fall off.

Halak had his worst season as pro here and did not look comfortable at all. I doubt he'd sign here again.

Also the DeSmith trade was a contract dump. the only asset was a third round pick which is fair if you look at other contracts shedding trades. Mnt helped them get cap compliant while DeSmith is an upgrade to the back up position without making a terrible bet on Halak.

Also if they kept him and sent DeSmith to 'kill it' in the minors like someone else said.. They'd obviously lose him on the waiver wire too. Some bad advice.

i'll really be surprise if anyone picks up martin thru the waivers other than colorado if they really are interested in him based on his lack of nhl experience and his horrible season.. i'm sure there will be plenty of league minimum nhl backup available thru waivers

Because Martin isn’t worth a 3rd….

If you can get anything other than future considerations,  take it

Can’t we bury Martin’s full salary in the minors anyway? If we can move him for whatever that’s great, but whether we do or not doesn’t impact our cap, right?

We can send him to Kalamazoo if we want…. His cap hit is so small it doesn’t matter where we put him.

But why keep him at all?
He stinks.
If the Avs want to give us a 5th round pick, take it and run

So no there's no help putting him in the minors as it's a one way contract.

What is a Buried Contract?

Teams do not receive full cap relief when a player on a one-way NHL contract is reassigned to the American Hockey League, or is loaned to a team in another professional league.
The players salary cap hit, minus the sum of the minimum NHL salary for the respective season and $375,000, still counts towards the team’s salary cap total.
The cap hit relief is therefore equal to the minimum salary of the respective season + $375,000:
  • 2014-15: $550,000 + $375,000 = $925,000
  • 2015-16: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
  • 2016-17: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
  • 2017-18: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
  • 2018-19: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
  • 2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
  • 2020-21: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
  • 2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000
  • 2022-23: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000
  • 2023-24: $775,000 + $375,000 = $1,150,000
  • 2024-25: $775,000 + $375,000 = $1,150,000
  • 2025-26: $775,000 + $375,000 = $1,150,000

So if Martin is paid 750 we get the entire amount in cap relief if he’s sent down, right? We can send a guy down and take his salary off the cap up to the 1150 amount. If he’s less than that 1150 then he is considered fully buried according to the cap cost?

No Alf.

READ.

You have to be above $1.15 million to get any benefit.

We don't get any advantage on the cap when he plays in the minors.

If we lose him on waivers, that's worth it on it's own sadly.

He does stink as an NHL starting goaltender, but I thought he played fine until he was thrust into that role. The defence in front of him didn’t help either.

At best, he is a serviceable backup goalie at the NHL level or a very good AHL starter. I would rather have him than Delia.

So, what’s he worth? Probably a late round pick like you suggested, but we should see what the max offer for him will be.

It depends how desperate Colorado is.

You are missing the point. Why would we sack our goalie depth for anything less than a 3rd when we have aspirations to do well this season? Martin is 4th in our goalie depth chart is he not? What if multiple goalies get injured, like last season.
