[Speculation] Avalanche Could Be Interested in Spencer Martin

You are missing the point. Why would we sack our goalie depth for anything less than a 3rd when we have aspirations to do well this season? Martin is 4th in our goalie depth chart is he not? What if multiple goalies get injured, like last season.

Because he requires waivers and if Colorado is legitimately interested him they, or another team, can simply pluck him off the wire when he's inevitably sent  down

The whole point here is Spencer Martin has played enough NHL games that if he gets a few more wins with our new defense, he is great trade bait.

DeSmith is better, I absolutly agree. But do Demko and team need him up there? No. Can he mentor Silvos in abby while splitting games? Hell yea.

If you put Desmith as backup he sits idle and no value.

Can’t we bury Martin’s full salary in the minors anyway? If we can move him for whatever that’s great, but whether we do or not doesn’t impact our cap, right?

the point is, Martin's salary is not ANY kind of issue. But DeSmith could be. I think this trade was amazxing cause without it we were over Cap, and we didnt need Pearson coming back anyway.

If Desmith goes to abby direct there is no waver issues. If Martin is backup and Demko gets hurt, DeSmith is the new Starter, martin still just backup.

I bet with another 5 or 6 wins Martin can get us a good trade at deadline and then we bring up Silvos or Desmith,

but tbh we'd be lucky to get any pick back for a guy who will likely be on waivers, unless the brass does some opening roster jiggling to protect these guys but I suspect cap management will take precedence over saving Martin.

You and you and you underestimate the value of a low paid backup tender. We got a great second goalie in DeSmith but do you really want 1.8 million on the cap sitting on the bench 80 percent of the time comapred to 0.8 million cap? DeSmith should be the lady in waiting in Abby and mentor Silvos. If something happens to Demmers, or if we trade Martin because he starts winning his backup games due to the defense..... then we got options, real options.

First off. DeSmith is a better goalie than Martin.  If the Canucks are hoping to make the playoffs they'll need a reliable backup tender. Martin cratered under the pressure last season.  Secondly, what makes you think DeSmith would make it through waivers?

It makes sense that Martin would be on the radar for some teams pressed against the game and in need of a backup.

Spencer Martin is a great third option but what makes him really intriguing is the fact that he makes league minimum. He makes 762k this season. That means for a team up against the cap, like Colorado, who are in need of a goalie, his cap hit is great to fit in and when there regular backup comes back from injury they can waive him without worrying about having to eat cap by waiving him.

There's usually a goalie or two that sort of gets claimed around the league each season. A couple of years ago it was Eric Comrie. Anton Forsberg got shuffled around a lot back in 2021 (He got claimed by 3 teams in one season, for those who remember). I think Martin could be the next one up.

DeSmith, despite a questionable character background, is a legit NHL backup who can play starting minutes. Martin cratered last year when he was asked to start after Demko went down with injury.

In an ideal world, Martin makes it through waivers and goes to Abby, giving Vancouver depth options in the event that either DeSmith flakes and he needs to be waived in favor of Martin or if DeSmith/Demko get injured and it doesn't force the Canucks to make Silovs the backup when he should be getting lots of games in the AHL this year.

Sawchenko is a wild card here and he could be the new Martin if Martin is claimed and not returned to Vancouver this season.

Either way, one thing is for certain, the Canucks have a lot of goalie depth and that's not a bad thing.

I think DeSmith would clear waivers because of his 1.8 million cap hit, Martin would be snached like a cadbury egg at easter because of his under 80K cap.

We only need a great backup after we clinch playoff. Up till then we can use a cheap knockoff. Provided Demmer dont get injured.

If Vancouver had any faith in Martin they wouldn't have acquired DeSmith. And waiting until they clinche a playoff spot is way too late to worry about the backup position. Shoddy  Backup goaltending could cost them a spot well before.

Aquiring DeSmith had more to do with dumping the Person Cap then securing backup goaltending. Is DeSmith going to push Demko? No. Silvos will. In 3 years or so. DeSmith will get more games if they put him in Abby split with Silvos.

Martin will play better as the backup and is 1 million cheaper on the cap. And with our actual defense, can put up some good wins.

Other teams see it.

they know how they scored on Martin. It wasnt easy until the defense broke down

DeSmith won't be with the team in 3 years.  He was brought in to be the backup this year.  This team.wants to make the playoffs and they obviously don't trust Martin to carry the mail as the backup

Could also be they don't trust Silovs yet (and fairly so).

I still believe that Martin could potentially re-establish himself with the big club this season, but it might take some confidence rebuild in Abby before he's given that opportunity. Last season was brutal on the guy, and it he played accordingly. It's his perseverance that will be challenged in forging a come back, but its not out of the question entirely. DeSmith is an appropriate back up with reasonably good career averages, but he's not devoid of faults in his game either. If he was, he wouldn't have been made available by two teams in such short order.  I'd hazard a guess that Martin still has a chance with this club, albeit relatively small, to try and prove himself again. Don't know how long that might last, but until he's traded or waived, he's still arguably in the hunt for that back up role given any timely circumstance.

Dude, you are wrong. We are only possibly cap compliant this year because they off loaded Pearson and its now clear tucker will still be on LTIR.

Demko does not need a backup. DeSmith can play in Abby.

Martin is good enough to play 1 in 5 games and Canucks will be in playoffs even if he lost every game.

Looking at our defense, Martin will have more wins than losses I mean, look at his actual record from last year, with the team?

And then the previous year? 3 wins, 0 losses in 2022, when just a backup goalie instead of all this crap on his shoulders

We'll see in a couple weeks.  I'll be shocked if it shakes out the way you think it will.

I will not be shocked it it plays out the way you are suggesting. And then next year we cant afford to keep Petterson, Boeser, Garlund, and so on and so forth

So no there's no help putting him in the minors as it's a one way contract.

What is a Buried Contract?

Teams do not receive full cap relief when a player on a one-way NHL contract is reassigned to the American Hockey League, or is loaned to a team in another professional league.
The players salary cap hit, minus the sum of the minimum NHL salary for the respective season and $375,000, still counts towards the team’s salary cap total.
The cap hit relief is therefore equal to the minimum salary of the respective season + $375,000:
  • 2014-15: $550,000 + $375,000 = $925,000
  • 2015-16: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
  • 2016-17: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
  • 2017-18: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
  • 2018-19: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
  • 2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
  • 2020-21: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
  • 2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000
  • 2022-23: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000
  • 2023-24: $775,000 + $375,000 = $1,150,000
  • 2024-25: $775,000 + $375,000 = $1,150,000
  • 2025-26: $775,000 + $375,000 = $1,150,000

You are reading that wrong. Yes, Martin being in the AHL does give us his full cap hit relief. One way contracts don't mean shit, except for what he is paid when in the AHL. A player waived to the AHL will only give us up to $1,150,000 of his total cap-hit off the team's cap. Martin's cap is well below that, so his cap hit will be off the books completely when he is in the AHL.

What the rule is saying is that if you waive someone like Myers and assign him to the AHL, only $1,150,000 of his $6 million cap will be off the books.

it comes down to, if your going to lose one of them on wavers, who would you want to keep? martin or desmith? imo we would lose one of them.

If we’re hoping for playoffs this year, then you lose Martin and keep DeSmith. No contest. I think with Clark, DeSmith will regain his Pittsburgh level playing (before last year) that‘ll help Demko not to have to play 70 games.

Probably squeeze out a 3rd or 4th considering

Considering what? He's waiver eligible and has mediocre NHL numbers.   goalies don't return much to begin with.  I seriously doubt they could get a 3rd from anyone
