The Globe and Mail first reported on the lawyers' statement earlier today. The players' request to be tried together was granted during a court appearance Tuesday in London, Ont., according to the Globe. Criminal lawyers not involved in the case have been divided about whether a trial by judge or jury would be more advantageous for the players. I had a neighbour who ended up as a crown prosecutor in Ontario. It sounded like the day to day work was an absolute shit show, with almost no time per case when public defenders were involved. Law used to be very black and white, but today, it is more like domino's, where judges give exceptions to the exceptions, and so forth. I can see the concern here being Section 11(b) of the Constitution, which was the reason why R v Jordan resulted in a stay of proceedings. The last thing that anyone wants in a situation like this is for justice to be denied because of the technicality that "the clock ran out".
