Yea man. They traded down.

Yeah - but we never "had" it on draft day - we traded for it and traded it away - so we never got to pick 1st. Ever.

As a result of the draft lottery, the first three picks going into draft day were held by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Atlanta Thrashersexpansion team, and the Vancouver Canucks, respectively. The Canucks were determined to select both Sedins and therefore initiated a trading carousel involving multiple teams. After the trading was done, the Lightning had traded out of the first round altogether while the Thrashers held the first overall pick. However, Atlanta had also agreed not to draft either of the Sedin twins. The Thrashers therefore selected Stefan while the Canucks used the second and third picks to select the Sedins.

The way I read it Canucks never possessed the first pick, it was a multi team trade.

That's not correct. Burke owned the pick for about 4 hours.

1999 was #2 for some dude name Daniel Sedin ... followed with #3 wasted on some other hack named Henrik Sedin.

Pat Quinn Brian Burke was hell-bent on drafting the Sedins.

Vancouver had 1st and 3rd picks, Atlanta had 2nd. Quinn traded 1st for 2nd, on the understanding that Atlanta would pick Stefan (who was #1 on draft charts).

Stefan was chosen first, then Dank & Hank.

1999. Traded it away so that the Sedins could be drafted 2nd & 3rd. Patrik Stefan went first.

You’re right, Burke actually obtained it from TB briefly before trading it to Atlanta so he could select Daniel and Henrik 2nd and 3rd. Good knowledge 🙂

Trading for it for 1 millisecond before flinging it over to complete on Sedin / Sedin trade isn't really having a first round pick. It isn't like Vancouver held a 1st round pick for 3 days and then decided to trade it. Correct me if I am wrong someone more knowledgeable than I am.

Now Burke had two top five choices, but he needed to make sure that neither Tampa Bay nor Atlanta would snatch one of the Sedins at number one or two. Burke traded two later-round selections and the number four pick to Tampa Bay to move into their number one slot, and then sent a pick to Atlanta to allow the Thrashers to move to number one with an assurance they would not pick a Sedin. That left Vancouver with the number two and three choices, which landed them Daniel and Henrik, respectively.

We've never won the first slot in the lottery, nor used it to pick a player. We obtained it on at least one occasion but moved it to draft the sedins.

You're all very smart.

Let's go nucks, play hard and get the win tonight.

If by trading away a 1st round pick you mean holding one as part of a 3-way trade for a few milliseconds then sure, Vancouver had a 1st round pick which ended up with Atlanta Thrashers who then used it to pick up the Hall of Famer Patrik Stefan.

As about 3,000 previous posters have already (probably said), Vancouver never had a 1st round pick granted to them by way of standing at the end of a season or via draft lottery.

Yes we did!

🙂

We are recognized as one of the teams that’s never had a first overall pick guess it depends on exactly how the trades officially went down but doesn’t really matter, we have never picked first

did I just hear McLean give the Canukcs a compliment?

Was probably back-handed, something like “hey if the Canucks can have some success in the playoffs, there’s hope for the Leafs!”

Either that or Ron has had a stroke.

Or he's heard from the ref's the fix is in, and it's to deflect blame.

yes I’d make that trade in about two seconds, but Edmonton would never trade him to a division rival

No. We need Demko. Why do we want Crysaiitl

That '99 draft was horrific.  Good on Burke to find a way to get both Sedins.

Henrik Zetterberg and Ryan Miller were late round picks, a couple of the other few impact players from that year
