Canucks sign recent draft pick Sawyer Mynio to three-year contract

The Vancouver Canucks have announced the signing of one of their most recent draft picks. Defenceman Sawyer Mynio has inked a three-year, entry-level contract GM Patrik Allvin announced this morning.

The Kamloops-born blueliner was selected by the Canucks in the third round of the 2023 draft, 89th overall. He was one of four defencemen picked by the Canucks last June.

“Sawyer has gained some valuable experience since we drafted him, taking part in our summer development camp, Penticton Young Stars Tournament and our Training Camp in Victoria,” Allvin said in a media release. “We have liked the way he has looked on the ice and our staff is looking forward to helping him improve his game and skillset in the years to come.”

The 18-year-old scored 31 points (5-26-31) in 68 games with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds last season. Mynio, a 6-foot-1, 173-pound rearguard, tied for fourth among WHL defencemen in plus-minus, with an impressive +50 rating. The left-shot defenceman added four points (1-3-4) in 19 playoff games, en route to Seattle’s appearance in the Memorial Cup Final.

After he was drafted, Mynio indicated that he wanted to put on more weight and anticipated getting more offensive opportunities with the Thunderbirds.

“I hope to bring a lot more offensively next year,” Mynio told reporters at the NHL Draft in Nashville.

He also said his favourite player growing up was Duncan Keith.

“I hope to get some power play time, like that. I think that would definitely help my personal records a lot. That would definitely grow my game a lot more.”

We have infinite contracts to sign?  Dude isn't a flight risk or breaking into the league anytime soon.

Is he an over ager where his ELC would be shorter if signed in a year?  Is there some advantage about being able to coach or manage his development if he is signed?

We're gonna have to start, or get used to Patrik Allvin telling it like it is.

They liked his progress and it sends a message to the whole pipeline.

It is time for some folks here to read up on what ELC slides are:

"If a player who is signed to an entry-level contract and is 18 or 19 years of age (as of September 15 of the signing year), does not play in a minimum of 10 NHL games (including both regular season and playoffs; AHL games do not count), their contract is considered to ‘slide’, or extend, by one year. For example, if a player signed an ELC for three seasons from 2015-16 to 2017-2018, and their contract slides, their contract is now effective from 2016-17 to 2018-19. An exception to this rule is that if the player is 19 on September 15 of the first year of their contract, and turns 20 between September 16 and December 31, their contract does not slide.

Players who sign at 18 years old are eligible to have their contracted extended for 2 seasons. This extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 in his signing year. Signing bonuses do not slide, and are paid to the player regardless of a slide, this causes the annual average of the players contract to change, and therefore the cap hit decreases for this player."

But the fact is this is a third round pick who hasn’t really shown much. There’s a reason why you don’t typically see these players sign ELC’s so soon.

Why would we be worrying about his ELC being extended now? He’s a long ways from being an NHLer. Maybe if they thought he was gonna be in the NHL in a few years. But I’m not seeing evidence of that yet.

So in your opinion, why are we doing this?

I don't understand why sign him how? We have 47 or our allowable 50 contracts would be nice to have more wiggle room.

Players in Junior don't count towards the 50 contract limit. So just a sign that they like him and want to let him know that.

Vancouver Canucks Sign Sawyer Mynio To Entry-Level Contract

September 24th, 2023 at 12:30pm CST • By Ethan Hetu

The Vancouver Canucks have announced that Sawyer Mynio has been signed to a three-year entry-level contract, the financial terms of which were not disclosed.

Mynio, 18, was a third-round pick of Vancouver at the 2023 draft. A member of the WHL champion Seattle Thunderbirds, the six-foot-one left-shot blueliner was ranked 62nd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. He scored 31 points in 68 games last year, solid points production to go alongside a massive +50 plus/minus rating.

With some significant names

graduating from Seattle, Mynio is set to play a larger role on their blueline moving forward. This entry-level deal is likely to end up sliding for two years, as Mynio will probably end up playing out two more years of major junior eligibility before joining the pro ranks in the Canucks organization.

*could be that mgmt expects him to make significant strides with a larger role in SEA and thus ensure he’s securely in the fold for team development come WHL graduation. Ranked 62nd amongst NA skaters…some major potential with him. He’s also not looked out of place at camp thus far as an 18 year old.

His junior numbers as a 5th defenseman are very good. Keep in mind he played behind a stacked Seattle team that had Korchinski as well as 3-4 year veterans such as Prokop, Hanzel, Allan who played more minutes than him. He didn’t get much PP opportunity and scored most of his points 5 on 5 while being one of the teams best shutdown defenseman in the playoffs.

It’s quite possible he scores 60 pts next year.

Most likely.

Very hard to predict the trajectory of an 18 year old though. Usually why teams wait at least a couple years to sign players taken outside the first round.

We’ll see however, could end up looking like a good move if he’s knocking on the door at 21-22 and still has a couple years on his ELC.

He won't count against the 50 contract limit due to the entry level slide for CHL players who are under the age of 20.
