Arthur Kaliyev Has Asked To Be Traded

May 29th, 2024 at 6:59pm CST • By Brian La Rose

This season was a rough one for Kings winger Arthur Kaliyev.  After being a capable secondary scorer in his first two seasons, things more or less went off the rails in 2023-24.  Now, the 22-year-old is believed to have asked for a trade, reports David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.

Kaliyev put up a respectable 14 goals and 13 assists in his rookie year in 2021-22 and followed that up with an improvement in 2022-23, collecting 13 goals and 15 helpers despite missing 26 games.  Accordingly, there was reason for optimism that he’d take another step forward this season while ideally being able to play a little higher in the lineup.

None of that happened.  Instead, Kaliyev found himself a frequent healthy scratch, especially under Jim Hiller who had the interim tag lifted to become the full-time head coach earlier this month.  Along the way, he managed just seven goals and eight assists in 51 games while logging less than 12 minutes a night of playing time.  Then, when the playoffs came, he was scratched for all five games in their opening-round loss to Edmonton.

While his stock isn’t at its highest right now, Kaliyev could be an intriguing buy-low candidate for some teams.  71 points in 188 career NHL appearances is relatively decent for a player who has averaged just over 12 minutes a night over that time.  Meanwhile, while he’s a pending restricted free agent, Kaliyev is owed a qualifying offer of just $874K and doesn’t have salary arbitration rights.  Coming off the year he just had, it’s hard to see him commanding much more than that on a one-year contract.

The Kings were believed to be open to tradingKaliyev during the regular season (amidst speculation that Kaliyev himself would also be open to being moved) but a suitable swap never came to fruition.  Now, they’re believed to be willing to move on from him altogether according to a recent report from Eric Stephens of The Athletic (subscription link) so the asking price will almost certainly be lower now.  With Kaliyev wanting to move on and Los Angeles believed to be wanting to move on from him, he seems quite likely to be moved in the coming weeks.

The guy has a wicked shot. He was a beast in The OHL.. Very impressive World Juniors numbers as well.. Unfortunately he's not the strongest skater and that's been his biggest downfall. It was the biggest knock on him coming out of Junior and why he slipped into The 2nd Round.. He's got one hell of a release he truly could be a 30 Goal scorer but sadly the skating hasn't really improved all that much. Shot still looks good though! That should keep him bouncing around the league for awhile.

He was good under Todd McClellan. Not good in a trap system. He has a lethal shot. Worth a look imo

Depends on the cost of acquisition. If he’s cheap like Krapsoft then sure. Try him.

i agree with this

absolute no brainer to pick him up if cheap

upside is very high

just thinking back to all of those times Petey found mik with a perfect pass and an open net, kaliyev would bury those

If all it takes is a later round pick or a C prospect we don’t have a ton of faith in, then why not.

Some team may want him more.

We need some cheap contributions from  new guys this season until our better prospects are more ready to take on a role.

A problem we’d run into in pursuing a Kaliyev is you’ll have teams like CHI offering their draft picks which are much better positioned. If he’s cheap, everybody and their dog will go after him and not sure we want to get involved in too much of a bidding war that way. Would probably take us losing a B level prospect

I am all for these low risk signings as they can just be waived if they don’t work out.

I do think that we may be in a better position to get some older veteran players looking for a chance to win more than young guys looking for a bigger opportunity to showcase themselves.

Our entire bottom line should likely get replaced, and that is in addition to figuring out what we do with Mikheyev, Lindholm, Joshua, and adding another top six winger.

I do think the management has earned some trust.  No one is perfect but they have been right far more than wrong and the results on the ice showed it.

I doubt we’re looking for reclamation projects at this point, but adding some competition for Hogs and Pods plus potential scoring pop does sound good.

IMO we should be looking for multiple reclamation projects. Florida is on there way to the finals with multiple on the team. Forsling, Bennet, hell even OEL would also be considered reclamation projects. Looking for a mid/early 20s guy who hasn't work with his current team may be our best chance at finding an elite talent on a budget.

HockeyDB has him at 6’2, 210lbs.
Mean mugging kid too.
I think he could break out soon with the right situation.

Personally, I want to surround Petey with 2 huge power forward wingers.
This kid with another more proven top 6 PF would be rad.

A 2nd or couple 3rds would prob get it done

I think he would be better positioned to succeed playing Vancouver's system to be honest. I think another club can offer a little more than the Canucks could.

Bigger, faster, offensive forwards ? really like Sprong as s UFA option.

That’s a fair counter-point and I agree for the most part.

I do think we’ll be in a great spot for guys a little more established and looking to sign a 1 year “show me” deal to see if they can get back on track.

Not sure we’ll be looking to outbid anyone on RFA aged pieces to take a flyer on. Tocchet won’t be gifting anything at the NHL level for guys who need development.  If management thinks there’s potential, though, it’s a great way to add depth at controlled cost.

And that’s the rub… just don’t think we’re at a throw things at the wall and see what sticks competitive phase IE Kravstov - though to be fair Kaliev is a lot more proven at the NHL level.

Kings Rumors: Arthur Kaliyev Linked to Atlantic Team

Michael DeRosa Saturday, June 01, 2024

The Los Angeles Kings are preparing for what will be a busy offseason. After a short playoff run, it is apparent that they will need to make some changes to their group. One player who is expected to be moved is Arthur Kaliyev, as he has asked for a change of scenery.

Kaliyev is a young forward with good upside, so he is generating interest even after his rough 2023-24 season. One specific club that reportedly has the skilled winger on their radar is the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens' interest in Kaliyev is understandable, as they are a rebuilding team in a prime position to take a shot at a promising youngster like Kaliyev. On the Canadiens, he would have far more chances to succeed, too, as their forward depth is not as strong as the Kings'.

Kaliyev would be a solid addition to the Canadiens' middle six if acquired. In addition, he would also be a clear candidate for their power play because of his scoring touch and size.

Kaliyev, 22, played in 51 games this season with the Kings, where he had seven goals to go along with 15 points and a minus-3 rating. It was a hard year for the 2019 second-round pick, but when noting that he had 28 points in 56 games just back in 2022-23, he has the potential to get back on track.

Let's see if the Canadiens end up landing Kaliyev during this offseason from here.
