RWJC Posted June 5 Share Posted June 5 Report: Ottawa Senators looking to trade Mathieu Joseph Shane Seney Wednesday, June 05, 2024 According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen, the Ottawa Senators are looking to trade forward Mathieu Joseph ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft. Garrioch reports a league executive mentioned this to him recently. Joseph, 27, is signed for two more seasons at a $2.95 million cap hit and does not hold any trade protection. He's found his name involved in trade talks throughout the last two seasons and it's become quite clear the organization is looking to move on this summer. Joseph scored 11 goals and 35 points in 72 games last season and enjoyed a career season. He's quickly become one of the Senators best penalty killers and also landed 105 hits and blocked 49 shots in 2023-24. He's been rumored to be heading to the Philadelphia Flyers in the past, but no word yet if the Flyers have circled back this offseason. The Senators are also listening to trade offers on several of their other players, with ongoing reports Jakob Chychrun and Joonas Korpisalo could also be in play. After another season of missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the owner and management are looking to re-tool on the fly to get back into playoff contention. One things for sure, captain Brady Tkachuk isn't going anywhere. GM Steve Staios has denied the trade rumors circling their captain after the New York Rangers were linked to making a mega-offer this offseason. For now, Joseph is in play, among others, Tkachuk is staying put. Dunno, apparently Green and Tochett are pals and they think hockey in a similar way, I'm more than willing to give him a fair shot in Ottawa. Bobby James Posted June 6 Share Posted June 6 If we can work out a deal where we send Mik for Joseph then I'm open to it. Mik could score 20 again once properly healed up and at worse he'll be a solid defensive forward (similar to what they have in Joseph now). Ottawa could choose to take a risk and pay about a million and a half more for at a chance at a better offensive player. Joseph seems to be at best a 30 point guy who will get you about 10-15 goals. Will play in your bottom 6, PK and hit. Canucks do it to save a little cap, that's it. They need offense still and they'll have to look elsewhere for it. Provost Posted June 6 Share Posted June 6 If the team could find a monster physical centre for the 3rd line, it would be interesting to see how having two speedy forechecking wingers like Joseph and Garland being pests on a line together. I don't find the player really compelling for our needs, but in a package deal he could fill a hole. Ottawa needs a big roster shakeup and show some serious forward momentum this year or risk their younger high end players wanting to bail (kind of like Petterson if we didn't get better this year). Batherson, Zub, Kastelic, and of course Thachuk are all players from Ottawa that the Canucks could really use... of course Ottawa could really use them too, so it would be that easy. Most of their D shoot left, so maybe a gamble that they could re-sign Hronek would pry some of those attractive pieces from their team. Green was never able to run a decent defence, relied on Demko too much and never really brought the room together, but sure, similar.
