I think we can all agree that Obama dropped the ball in 2014 with Crimea, because that just emboldened Putin to make this invasion. What he should have done is call the Kremlin, asked if the little green men were affiliated with the Russian army, and when the usual denial comes, just wipe those units out. Similar to how it played out in Syria. Crimea is the escalation to Eastern Ukraine, giving up Eastern Ukraine to a country that says the entirety of Ukraine shouldn't exist is just begging them to make a play for Central Ukraine.
