NHL Trade Rumors: Flames & Devils Have "Renewed" Blockbuster Talks

James Wilson Saturday, June 08, 2024

The Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils have reignited blockbuster trade talks centered around veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom, months after a previous deal fell through.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports that the two teams, who were close to an agreement before the trade deadline in February, have resumed discussions, with Markstrom willing to waive his no-movement clause to join the Devils. This willingness has added momentum to the ongoing negotiations.

A significant obstacle in the previous talks was the Flames' reluctance to retain a portion of Markstrom’s $6 million annual salary cap hit, which runs through the 2025-26 season.

While New Jersey remains a primary suitor, the Flames are now receiving interest from multiple other teams, complicating the trade landscape.

The main sticking point remains the return price, as Calgary is firm on their valuation and is prepared to wait for an acceptable offer.

The Devils, led by general manager Tom Fitzgerald, are determined to secure a reliable starting goaltender and prefer Markstrom over other options like Boston's Linus Ullmark and Anaheim's John Gibson.

The Flames initially sought a significant return, including a first-round pick, top prospect Seamus Casey, and a young NHL player like Alexander Holtz.

While Fitzgerald is prepared to offer his 2024 first-rounder (10th overall) and potentially Holtz, he reportedly remains hesitant to part with a player like Dawson Mercer or Casey.

Markstrom doesn't move the needle for NJ. Change my mind.

Absolutely Marky would make a huge difference for the Devils. 10OA should do it if Flames retain a bit. Devils give up a lot of high danger chance. Marky would settle down their running around trying to stop every shot. They could play a solid D-zone where they allow shots from the outside. Marky stops those on his sleep. Devils get Marky and they will get back into the playoffs. Even though they are marshmallow soft.

Always the optimist Alf.  Lol.

Fitzgerald has been quoted as looking for more gritty players in free agency too.  So maybe they get quite a bit better this off season.  Their Hughes is sure softer then ours though.  Heck Jack is softer then Petey.

If the Devils don’t get an elite goalie like Marky they will have another bad year. Another bad year and Jack and Luke will want out. It’s a crap market. Very few care about hockey there.

So random thought but.... what if Lindy wants to follow his buddy to NJ? apparently one of the big reasons Marky went to Cowtown was their friendship.

Is there someone we can poach for cheap out of NJ since they'll need a lot of cap to land both of these guys?

How does a 34 year old goalie on the decline fetch that much?

Surely the Devils can get Gibson or Saros for that price no?

Marky still steals games, I suppose thats why? look at Bob's on FLA too, older goalies can still get it done. Plus he's on a short deal, so if it goes sideways it's not hard to move on.

Yea but that’s still a ridiculous price for a goalie you might only get two good years out of.

Right? If that's what Marky can fetch we should throw demko into the ring. 10th, Holtz, Mercer and Casey!!

This. That kind of package for Saros would make much more sense. Marky probably only has a couple more good years left whereas Saros is still in his prime.

He should have been one of the three vezina nominees this season. He had the best saves above expected in the league. According to Woodley he had an unreal season.

he was also if I’m not mistaken the best goalie off the rush chances and breakaways which would have helped NJ a lot this year.

marky a goalie that can steal games. And with NJ they need a solid goalie and it transforms their season.

i think they arE a clear playoff team with marky in net next season

Literally nothing you posted here is factual. He was 9th in goals saved above expected. Hellebuyck was 1st, Demko 2nd. He's averaged below .900 the last 2 seasons, and would be downgrading his defense, at the crisp age of 34 after multiple injuries.

He does nothing for the NJ except take up cap and give them false hope. He is not the goalie we had who bailed us out relentlessly. There's a reason we let him walk. NJ doesn't have the luxury of having Demko, but they have the luxury of Ullmark and Saros both being on the market in a buyer's goalie market this offseason.

Latest On Jacob Markstrom

June 9th, 2024 at 1:55pm CST • By Gabriel Foley

The Calgary Flames are trying to move former Vezina Trophy runner-up Jacob Markstrom as discretely as possible, shares Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. Friedman adds that the team was aware of the theatrics brought on by Markstrom’s trade rumors earlier this season. Markstrom publicly expressed his frustrationwith the team over his pre-Deadline speculation, amidst rumors of a pending move to the New Jersey Devils being reversed after Calgary went 9-3-0 throughout February. Markstrom posted a .928 save percentage while appearing in 10 games during the hot streak. He’d go on to post a measly .869 save percentage in 10 games following the strong stretch, floundering on a Flames lineup that went on to miss the postseason by 17 points.

The second half of season felt like an encapsulation of Markstrom’s play over the last few years – with dramatically up-and-down stretches culminating in a modest stat line. He posted 23 wins and a .905 save percentage in 48 games this year – finding the same number of wins and a stronger save percentage than he did last season, despite playing in 11 fewer games.

Markstrom has been a no-doubt starter for much of the last eight seasons, after joining the Vancouver Canucks in 2014 in the trade that sent Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers. Markstrom would make his first stand as a full-fledged starter in the 2017-18 season, posting 23 wins and a .912 save percentage in 60 appearances with Vancouver. He’s played in 40 or more games in every season since, totaling a .910 save percentage in 376 games. And while last season’s sub-.900 save percentage – and a tally this year that came close –  have caused some to pause, it’s hard to think Markstrom isn’t bound for the lion’s share of games with whoever he may suit up for next season.

That could be the New Jersey Devils, who have Markstrom as one of their top trade targets this summer, but Friedman notes they’re not the only teams involved. Friedman specifically named the Toronto Maple Leafs as a strong candidate for trade, largely thanks to Toronto now being manned by Brad Treliving, the general manager who signed Markstrom to the six-year, $36MM contract he’s currently on with the Flames. The price of a Markstrom trade could quickly test Toronto’s budget – especially as they approach a summer with just $18.83MM in cap space, with 12 pending free agents.

The Leafs are also woefully juxtaposed by a Devils team willing to move the 10th-overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft for lineup improvements. That offer could be tantalizing for a Calgary team looking for a breadth of young talent. At the very least, it’s an exciting bar in a goalie market that, per Friedman, has plenty of invested teams.

Flames are gonna do well in a Markstrom trade imo, if they can get a 1st and a good prospect that's a win imo

He ain't the future in Calgary and everyone knows it, the only real big issue is that this year's batch of UFA goaltenders isn't anything special, do they throw Wolf to the wolves?
