NHL Rumors: Blackhawks GM Speaks On Potential Reunion With Patrick Kane

James Wilson Sunday, June 09, 2024

Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson addressed speculation about a potential reunion with Patrick Kane, indicating it is unlikely the team will extend a contract offer if he becomes a free agent on July 1.

Speaking at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo, Davidson emphasized the difficult decisions made regarding longstanding players like Kane and Jonathan Toews, which were intended to help the team move forward.

"I think we made some really tough decisions on some longstanding players," Davidson said, as reported by Scott Powers of The Athletic. "I don’t foresee us going back on that."

Patrick Kane, 35, signed a one-year, $2.75-million deal with the Detroit Red Wings last November after recovering from off-season hip surgery.

The Buffalo native, who was selected first overall by the Blackhawks in 2007, spent his entire career in Chicago before his stint in Detroit, where he posted 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) in 50 games.

Despite his strong performance and successful recovery, Davidson noted that the Blackhawks are focused on building a new core without the overshadowing presence of former stars.

"He did have a really good year," Davidson acknowledged. "I think we’re all really happy to see that after having his hip procedure last offseason. That was great to see."

Davidson also highlighted the Blackhawks' commitment to their rebuilding strategy, stating it is "very unlikely" the team will trade down from their second-overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

I've personally wondered about signing Kane as a veteran winger for Pettersson. He was still really productive with Detroit this year and I think he'd be a better fit than Toffoli despite past chemistry he's had.

Kane is going to remain in the East. He would most likely re-sign in Detroit or another city close to both Chicago/Buffalo. I can't see him signing with the Canucks.

Though I just wonder, if we had Kane on his $2.5 million cap hit this season and put him on a line with Petey, how much magic the 2 of them could create...

Why would Kane play for the Canucks? They aren't an original six team. He's clearly going to Montreal, Boston, or Toronto on the cheap.

Funny how we've forget that Kane was on that 2010 cup team, and the others too.    Wasn't he a Smythe winner too, and weren't the Canucks up against them year after year before we finally broke through in 2011?   How did he go from a POS (rape allegations, rockstar lifestyle that could make JV blush), to a respected veteran we'd want on our team, not sure he's a good fit in our organization or want him around our core.   This is one topic I wouldn't mind hearing @King Heffy 's take on.    Some players remain the enemy, CHI well i'd stay away from anyone on that 2010 team.

And why would he pick the Canucks.

Yeah that's a hard no; he showed that he hadn't changed by publicly praising Bowman.  You don't want this piece of trash anywhere near the young players.

The Canucks have cap space and a top 6 rw spot alongside a 100 point guy.  There's also a strong American flair on this team.

I wouldn’t rule out him signing with Dallas or Colorado, despite them not being original 6 teams.

Don't hold the same grudges some do , (there is a lot to overlook here though, it's not like he's Gary Robert's who ran McLean repeatedly, Theo Fluery who kept scoring against us, or Brown who creamed us... he's just not someone that's easy to respect)  just like I said, why would Kane choose us?    And will his style even fit Tochett?  If Kuzemenko didn't, doubt Kane's will.   He's never been a guy who's been heavy on the back check.

If you restrict yourself to players that only play a certain way, youre going to be on the outside looking in, more often than not.

Kane is still a prolific scorer, a pp specialist and will be signing a short term deal at a reasonable price.

this feels more like a TDL kind of move.

I could see it, he's in the twilight of his career and those teams are as good a bet as any to try and go deep with

I think I'd be more interested in just getting a longer term solution for Petey, but sure free is good.

I think a 2-3 year placeholder until Lek is truly ready is perfect, especially if that player can still get 60-80 points

I am with you.
‘Don’t care how good they may or may not be for the team I don’t want this Kane or the other one near my team.  Entitled D-bags for decades, why do we assume differently now because they are veteran d-bags.

Pretty low risk though on a 2 year term, which is probably what he'd be looking for.

You also have garland as a contingency plan if Kane needs rest etc.

Boeser

Kane

Garland

Is a nice looking top 3rw

Sure but why do you think Patrick Kane is the answer?   He's never been a two way guy.   Offensive beast until the last few years sure.    It depends on his price.   Sure if he wants to play for us at 2 million and they don't think he'd be a distraction go for it.
