Euro 2024 GDT

Recommended Posts

Didn't see the match, but looking at the game stats, I have to say that the Dutch are probably happy with a draw against the French today....

OTOH, after the way Austria handled Poland earlier in the day, I'm a bit worried about their final group stage match on Tuesday....

People are only just realising why both Euro 2024 matches today kick off at 8pm

Nowadays it's standard procedure for all the teams in a group to play their last match at the same time. But the reason behind it dates back over four decades ago.

England WAGs live high life at Euros with 'glam teams', £15k VIP match packages, and private jets

One source said the England WAGs were being treated 'better than the players' with lobster dinners and private jets making their trip to Germany a special one

Hungarian forward Barabas Varga will have to undergo surgery after a collision with Scottish Keeper Angus Gunn..... According to the article I read, Varga has "several facial fractures" and judging from the reactions of his teammates, the injury looked as bad as it sounds.

The Hungarians were upset with the medical staff, who were taking too long to attend to Varga. At one point, one of the Hungary players ran over to the stretcher and started pulling on it in an attempt to speed things up. UEFA's response is (predictably) there were no delays and everything was done by the book....:classic_rolleyes:

Also of note was a play about 10 minutes from full time, where it appeared as though Scotland's Stuart Armstrong was brought down in the box by Hungary's Willi Orban. Even England's Alan Shearer, no stranger to the England - Scotland rivalry, called it a "terrible decision".

The end result is that Scotland is eliminated, while Hungary still has a chance of advancing, albeit without their striker, Varga....

Couple 0 - 0 draws to close out Group C.

England wins the group while Denmark looks to get 2nd.  Slovenia looks to qualify for the knockout stage as their goal difference puts them ahead of Hungary on 3 points.

Croatia is out for sure as they only have 2 points.

Tomorrow is the final group stage matches for Groups E & F.  Then the knockout stage starts Saturday.

Disappointing loss for the Dutch, giving up that late goal.....but unless I'm misunderstanding, they're going to advance anyway as one of the top four 3rd place finishers? :classic_unsure:

Also: How do they decided 2nd place in Group C?

Had to look it up. Denmark and Slovenia drew all 3 matches.  Same goals for and same goals against. It's likely 8 on this list.

The qualifier will be decided on the below criteria, with number one being the first used and then others following in order if the tie remains:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the head-to-head matches played between the teams in question.

  2. Superior goal difference resulting from the head-to-head matches played between the teams in question.

  3. Higher number of goals scored in the head-to-head matches played between the teams in question.

  4. If, after having applied criteria 1 to 3, teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams who are still level to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5 to 10 will apply.

  5. Superior goal difference in all group matches.

  6. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches.

  7. If on the last round of the group stage, two teams who are facing each other are tied in points, goal difference and goals scored then they drew their match, their ranking is determined by a penalty shootout. (This criterion is not used if more than two teams had the same number of points.)

  8. Lower disciplinary points total in all group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card.)

  9. Higher position in the European Qualifiers overall ranking, unless the comparison involves hosts Germany, in which case a drawing of lots will take place.

Soooo.....I went back through each team's three matches and guess what? It looks like it will come down to #9.....:classic_laugh:

EDIT: Gotta feel for Slovenia....if not for conceding in the 96th minute against Serbia, they'd be through....

Okay, just saw an article that said there was a yellow shown to a member of the Slovenian coaching staff that didn't show up in the game summaries that I looked at. (For players, both squads had 6 yellows each)

This apparently has given the Danes the 2nd place slot in Group C.

Two more draws today, meaning that the standings in Group E don't change. Romania win the group, with Belgium finishing 2nd and Slovakia 3rd. 4 points for the Slovaks will put them through to the KO stage, while Ukraine is done.

Couple draws in Group

Ukraine 0 - Belgium 0

Slovakia 1 - Romania 1

Tiebreaker city as all 4 in the group finish with 4 points, but not as complicated with Group C between the Danes and Slovenia.

Romania wins with superior goals for.  Belgium gets 2nd and Slovakia gets 3rd all on goal difference.  Ukraine is out.

Later today, Hungary is hoping that both Czechia and Georgia either draw or lose in their matches today.  If either of them win, then Hungary is out.

Some interesting permutations in Group F.....

Czechia can advance, but they'll need a win against the Turks. Georgia is in the same boat entering their match against Portugal.....the difference being the Portuguese have already qualified for the Knockout stage and can't be knocked out of the top spot in the group.

Will they dress a "B" lineup and give Georgia a fighting chance of advancing?
