CGY needs cap space to find guys via UFA and at the same time they are bolstering their future. They're doing a retool the right way. Since the Tkachuk trade, the Flames have moved out: Toffoli Lindholm Zadorov Tanev Hanifin Markstrom In return, the Flames got: 1st Round Pick 1st Round Pick 1st Round Pick 2nd Round Pick 3rd Round Pick 3rd Round Pick 3rd Round Pick 3rd Round Pick 4th Round Pick 5th Round Pick Kuzmenko Sharangovich Jurmo Brzustewicz Grushnikov Miromanov Bahl All while maintaining a half decent roster to work with. Let's say they go out and grab a top 6F and a top 4 RHD: Stephenson? DeMelo? Top 9: Huberdeau-Kadri-Kuzmenko Pospisil-Stephenson-Zary Mangiapane-Backlund-Sharangovich Top 4: Weegar-Anderson Kylington-DeMelo Bang on, there's no reason they couldn't be competitive next season. Probably not a playoff team, but competitive. It really depends on who they're able to reel in via UFA or trade.

You can make a trade after the trade deadline but none of the players involved in the trade can play NHL games until the next season. If the regular season has ended and you are already out of the playoffs that really doesn't matter.

I think it's more that they've done well in getting value in return for all those guys. They now have assets in hand that they can flip for players on the trading block (ie. Necas?) Markstrom is an aging goalie with injury history, and a history of inconsistent tending. Calgary did very well with this trade to get a 1st and good 23yo D prospect with size.
