An 18th OA pick + a 23yo 6'6" defender that played over 17min a night including 1:48 SHTOI... If they didn't buy low, it probably would have been the standard package of most star player transactions in this league: Serviceable Roster Player Prospect 1st Just missing the prospect. Patrick Roy for sure was the best goalie all-time to be traded for what he'd done up until then (Vezina's a couple Conn Smythe's) and at the time was considered quite the haul. Thing is, it wasn't a big haul for one of the best players in the league. Closest recent hypothesical, would be like trading Vasilevsky fresh off his Conn Smythe and Vezina. And not really. Todd Bertuzzi for Luongo. And right away knew who won that deal. Curiously, Schneider for a 9th (Horvat), might be one of the better hauls of any number one traded. Something to consider if anyone wants to try and make a Demko proposal. Better keep it lite. As in the return. That was costly for Montreal -- both in return and for the loss of Roy. I'm trying to think of top tier goaltenders that have been traded in their prime... like you said, Luongo and Schneider come to mind. -Buzzsaw-
This will make NJ a lot more competitive. Markstrom is far from being washed up... should have another couple good years in him.
Michael Scott
Just curious what the conditions are on that first round pick. I know it's top 10 protected. Let's say it's the 9th overall, what would the flames get?

Honestly, it's not listed outright, but it's just what can be assumed from past precedence of top 10 protected picks.
