Oilers Rumors: Edmonton Looking to Trade Evander Kane

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, there were rumors swirling in Vegas at the 2024 NHL Draft that the Edmonton Oilers asked veteran forward Evander Kane to waive his no-movement clause. Friedman had this to say recently via 32 Thoughts:

“There were rumours they had asked Evander Kane to waive his no-move clause, but as of Saturday, that had not occurred. That’s another one to keep in mind. We’ll see if that becomes a thing at all, but as of Saturday, it had not happened.”

Kane has two seasons left on his deal at $5.1 million per season and does hold a full no-movement clause for the 2024-25 season and this turns into a modified no-trade clause that covers 16-teams in March before the 2025 trade deadline. The 32-year-old winger battled through a sports hernia throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which kept him in and out of practices and games for the past several weeks.

Kane finished the regular season posting  24 goals and 44 points in 77 games and chipped in with eight points in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games. With all the hoop la on and off the ice with Kane, it's becoming quite obvious the Oilers would prefer to move on at this point.

The Oilers currently have a projected $9 million in cap space and have a number of pending free agents they'd like to re-sign including Connor Brown, Adam Henrique and Mattias Janmark. By moving out Kane for essentially nothing in a salary dump transaction, could allow for Oilers management to bring back their entire third line who were vital for success deep into the playoffs.

Kane's days in Edmonton appear to be numbered.

Good luck with that Edmonton. Can't imagine why any team would take this guy off their hands. He's not nearly good enough of a hockey player to be such a problem.

Utah says hello.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. This guy in a Mormon community.
Edit: actually never mind, he seems like the type of guy that would relish polyamory.

No to all players named Kane. Thank you.

If you look at Utah moves recently, looks like they are past being a camp dump.

He’s not a cap dump to them if some salary is retained, and they have ample cap to use up on a very young and inexperienced roster. Not saying Kane is the ideal personality in any way, but he can become trade capital again at deadline and they can afford to carry his contract until then and even play him up the roster a bit to build value. Maybe an SJS reunion is in the cards though??

To be fair, I never said I wanted Kane, just that it'd be a way to weaponize the salary cap for once and to also fill a couple of spots on the roster

So bring in someone more immature than the teenagers so they feel better about themselves?  Dubious plan.

like I said, it’s not ideal for Utah, but there are only a few teams who can afford to take him on at a discount and potentially recoup more from him afterwards.
SJS can support the contract but don’t have the pieces for him to play with to effectively boost his value.
EDM will be desperate to move off him so they can sign Walker on D who apparently is their prime target, not to mention extending a few other current players.

Never understood why Edmonton gave him money and term after everything he pulled he would have been lucky to get either.

Desperation is Ken Holland’s vice at times. Dumbbell Nurse comes to mind immediately.

“Holland chose to give into Nurse's demands, signing him to an eight-year, $74 million deal. The $9.25 million cap hit makes him the NHL's eighth highest-paid defenceman, when in reality he isn't even a top-two blueliner on the Oilers.”

Remember how excited Edmonton fans were when Red Wings wizard Ken Holland joined the organization?

Looks like he was riding the coattails of Nill. All he’s done is waste Edmonton’s window and sign bad deals. Now he’s leaving them with no notice or succession plan.

So he left exactly the way he ran the team.
