I am told the other way to pick up a Duck is to compliment him on his hockey skills while twiddling with your hair and then declare 'omg i am like so drunk".

The first edition of 32 Thoughts - The Podcast of the 2024-2025 season was a big one, welcoming new co-host Kyle Bukauskas to the show. His energy was immediately felt as he told story after story about players over the summer and, of course, teary-eyed stories about Johnny Gaudreau. The first 8 thoughts were different stories and recollections of the Blue Jackets and Flames legend, an icon for players who've been told they could never make the NHL because of their size. Above all, he was an even better person. There was also a heartwarming story about Matthew "Matty" Gaudreau and his time in the ECHL.

The show continued by detailing the recent GM switch for recent GML champions Toronto Maple Leafs. Friedman talked about the differences between the former GM, Gator, and new GM, Johnny Eh Giver. Toronto fans have reason to be excited, and the parades through the city have the morale at an all time high.

However, Elliotte then moved to the rumours that began swirling around the Columbus Blue Jackets and their current roster makeup. After already dealing superstar Kirill Kaprizov for a package including recent first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky and making some huge splashes at the draft, Friedman thinks GM Honkin Hronek is far from finished. He wonders if they're looking at adding not one, but two top four defensemen before training camp even starts. He thinks that "one deal is already done but it's contingent on a secondary move from the other team," though he can't say for certain. Friedman also thinks the framework is there for another deal but can't say for sure if a snag has been hit. Bukauskus says he's heard much of the same, and wonders if high performing players like Josh Norris or Jacob Trouba may be moved for cap relief, picks and prospects that can be moved to supplement other parts of the roster.

Bukauskas also said he thinks that Columbus has been reaching out to teams of top 5-10 goalies to see if they'd be willing to deal their cornerstone netminders. Pieces acquired in other moves may be swiftly sent off again to make this happen. However, the message is clear: Columbus is excited for their team but they want to compete for the GML cup while Jack Hughes is still making only $8 million, and are looking to the trade market to make that happen. In a closing remark, Friedman said that "I wouldn't be shocked if Columbus was involved in at least 10 different assets changing teams before the season starts." It's a bold strategy, and we'll see how it works out for them. Columbus finished 16th in the league last year, but just outside of a playoff spot due to a strong division. They're still on the hook for Sam Reinhart's $3 million retention, though he doesn't see that as a huge issue.

Next, Friedman wonders if Columbus has yet to offer contracts to pending UFA David Pastrnak or pending RFA Juraj Slafkovsky. He thinks that Columbus wants "further clarity on their ever-changing cap situation" before making any concrete offers, but that contract negotiations will "start in the first few months of the season." He adds "Columbus wants both players to be Blue Jackets for life. [Friedman] would be shocked if they don't sign new deals."

According to Bukauskas, "it's an exciting time to be a Blue Jackets fan. There's always something going on behind the scenes."

*Disclaimer*

The use of Johnny Gaudreau was not meant to offend or make light of the untimely deaths of him and his brother, but to make a semi-realistic, but fictional, report of the first 32 Thoughts Podcast of the season for this fantasy hockey league. Drinking and driving puts you and everyone you share the road with at risk. Be safe and be smart.

GML Training Camp Opens September 15th!!

Hockey season is just around the corner, and that means training camp for our GML teams!

Quote

5.5 - Training Camp

There is a Training Camp/Depth Chart tab on all team charts. Beginning September 15th, GML Training Camp will officially begin.  Waivers will be in place beginning on this date and players who require waivers will need to clear in order to be assigned to the minors for the start of the season. All players will need to be assigned to their designated rosters from that point forward regardless of where they are listed on your Rosters page.  Players assigned to the active roster will be listed on this tab in bold type, players assigned to junior or the minors will be listed in italics.

As of 8:00am Pacific Time on September 15th, training camps are opened and waivers are in effect!

All teams will now see their Training Camp chart as the lead page on their team chart.  All players signed to a contract are listed here and organized by position.

Players highlighted in red are required to be placed on waivers and must clear if they are to be assigned to the minors.

Players highlighted in green do not require waivers in order to be assigned to the minors.

Players highlighted in blue still meet age requirements to be assigned to junior during training camp.

ALL PLAYERS who are listed on a teams Training Camp chart must be assigned either to the active roster, minors or junior prior to the end of training camp via a post in the thread.

Example:

Quote

The Atlanta Thrashers assign Franchise McSavior to the active roster.

The Hartford Whalers place Gary Pylon on waivers for assignment to minors.

The Quebec Nordiques have assigned Patrick Breezeby back to junior.

Players can be assigned all at once at the end of camp, or throughout training camp as cuts are made if a team wishes.

Once a player is assigned, they will be marked on a teams chart.  Active roster players will appear in bold type, players assigned to the minors or junior will appear in italics.  Players who have been approved for pre-season LTIR for season long or career ending injuries will be marked in bold and italics.

If you have a question or see any errors in regards to player position, waivers eligibility etc., please let me know so I can adjust it.

Also, any questions/comments/concerns are welcome!  I'm not sure I'm explaining it in the proper detail, but it is all pretty straightforward.

Thank you @Sludge for the intense back-and-forth negotiations! That was a lot of fun and I’m sure we’ll make more moves in the future 🙂

In terms of this move, I’ll do a deeper dive on this once other moves are completed and announced.
