Ghostsof1915
For those saying "Vancouver is closer...." 1. Tampa has won cups in recent years. 2. Nice climate. 3. Vancouver would have to go to the Conference Finals to start attracting more talent. 4. Way easier travel schedule during the regular season. 2

I think Vancouver is already more appealing than some of the other Canadian cities due relatively better climate, but we still have trouble attracting big free agents. And we wonder why Canada hasn't won a cup since the cap came in...

You would also see all the UFA's go to Toronto, New York, Detroit, LA
RupertKBD
This is good news for me. I would not have wanted to be paying $9 million to a 37 year old player. There are younger players who can help us up front....
Pickly
If the Canucks traded for his rights I bet he would have signed here too. At least management wasn’t desperate. Remember when Benning tried to convince Lucic to sign here and offered him 6.5x6? That would have been disastrous. I have full confidence in today. RupertKBD
Looking at the list of UFA's there aren't any with the pedigree of Guentzel or Reinhart, (other than Stammer) but there are still some interesting names out there.... Debrusk, Teravainen, Toffoli, , Stephenson, Sprong, Monahan, Martinook, Trenin, Carrier....

Coconuts
Never had the cap space to actually jockey with these tax friendly state teams.
VanOriginal
I guess Gaborik's house wasn't enticing enough for Guentzel

The US cities you state have high taxes but due to their tax laws, a lot more write offs and better way to off set some taxes than Canada. North Carolina is only 3.5% individual tax rate, but compared to none in Florida can add up to big difference. On gross of $7M is $245,000. Guessing contract is structured with some years where the salary is much higher than that, so the tax implications could be significant between the two states. The league really needs to address this disparity in tax regimes. Maybe set the cap for each team with this taken into account.
