Rallies certainly were not all peaceful. My partner works for Service BC and they had a crowd of probably 150 protestors marching up to the government building, they had to actually lock the doors because the protestors were walking up to the building to enter it. Didn't stop them from banging on it and demanding they be let in. They then went and entered the police station down the street.

But the issue is you can not govern without a plan if you don't have anger.  The current manifestation of the right has no plan only anger.  To continue stirring that pot they suggest a loss of freedoms, money and now an attack on kids.  The suggestion is that educators and people who are just there are pedos and groomers and kids are at risk.

 

The ignorant eat this up.  As you can see, there are a lot of ignorant people out there.  The very suggestion that being of an opposing view makes you a child molesting groomer is genuinely one of the most vile insinuations that side of the fence has come up with.  It's so sickening that it's hard to believe it's a thing, until you realize that's exactly what's happening

I will give you an example of how I, and pretty much teachers who actually even use the resource, incorporate it into our units.

 

First of all, SOGI isn't a course and it certainly isn't Sexual Health Education, which is mandatory in BC schools and is almost always taught by a health nurse liaison from the regional health authority.  Sexual Health education has been mandatory for decades in BC and that's where you would learn about masturbation, in grade 7.  

 

Sexual Health Education (not SOGI) is integrated into all grades from kindergarten to grade 12, with grades k-4 focused in on things like recognizing uncomfortable or dangerous situations, consent and respectful behavior within friendships.

 

In grade 5, they get the human body and puberty intro, with a focus on their changing bodies.  This is the first time that any kind of identity or gender reference is made.  MN any, many, many kids are already exploring gender by this point and someone has to give them.credible information to help them on that path, wherever it leads 

 

By grade 7, they learn about sexual health, including sti's, pregnancy, masturbation and respectful conduct within relationships (sadly, the YouTube influencers are more influential there than we are) etc.  I have taught it many times and I can tell that, thanks to the internet, you'd be shocked at what they have already gleaned from the device mommy and daddy put into their fingers.  Most have very distorted, misinformed ideas about sex.  Educators try to help clear up misconceptions and give them credible information in a supporting way. 

 

Perhaps you'd like to sit in on one of the anonymous Q&A sessions with a grade 7 class.  It is something to behold.  Still, the adults in the classroom conduct the class with the utmost respect, class and professionalism.  We are there to help them understand what is happening to them.....physically, mentally and emotionally.  Parents are permitted to opt out of this (even though it's "mandatory")......very very few actually do.

 

This is not SOGI.

 

SOGI is about inclusion and human rights rights

 

Last year, I taught the grade 6 social studies curriculum, which is focused on human rights and international organizations.  I used SOGI resources and lessons to talk about article 2 of the UN Declaration of human rights.  It is akin to how we might teach about racial discrimination........we learn about public perception, history of prosecution, discrimination and how the lgbtq rights have evolved over time and that inclusion and empathy are always the better path to take, even when you disagree about how a person lives their life.

 

"SOGI is a set of tools and resources to help create safer and more inclusive schools for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities, rather than a set education program.

That's what SOGI is......a collection of resources to help schools be more inclusive of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  

 

There is no influence, no indoctrination, no grooming.  Whether it is used or not has no effect on students exploring these things.  Newsflash, they're doing it on their own ........we just happen to be the safe space and trusted adults they feel comfortable with. 

 

We can't prescribe hormones and we can't set up doctors appointments for hormone blockers or sex re-assignment surgery.  We are here to educate and support them during a very confusing, very emotionally exhausting time of their lives.

 

In most cases, were the only adults who are.

The data is pretty solid.  Teach kids nothing, they learn nothing and then they struggle as adults. 

 

Example:

 

States that switch to abstinence only sex Ed saw increases in teenage pregnancy,  and STDs when compared to states that have comprehensive sex Ed.  

 

The kids who are taught this stuff are better able to handle teenage and young adult life.   Learning about this in a controlled place is way way better than in the dark back seat of mom's minivan.

 

Hazzard a guess at the types of parents who are against comprehensive sex Ed.  You'll find them protesting "woke".  They were the ones pissed off about Bud Light.

 

The only groomers we need to fear are the guys in flamboyant outfits reading stories from the Bible.  Not teachers teaching about real life stuff.
