Derek Forbort | #27 | LD

Recommended Posts

Quick research notes:

- 6'4", so very tall, though not super stocky at 208lbs

- Almost no offense at all--can expect 10-15 points, 20 at best

- Ice time suggests he's probably a #5

- High hit frequency

- Slightly above average block frequency

- Relatively average takeaway-to-giveaway ratio for a stay-at-home defenseman

- Slightly negative penalties drawn vs. taken ratio--normal for a stay-at-home defenseman

- Fights on rare occasions (roughly one per year)

- A staple on the #1 PK unit for Boston in last three years with reasonably strong results

- Almost no PP time

- Solid Corsi of 47.6% given 38.3% OZ%, indicating a heavy defensive usage

A bit of an odd case where a guy doesn't get a lot of minutes 5v5, but is heavily relied upon for the PK. Not a bad add for $1.5M. Might be an example of what Juulsen could become.

Looks like Forbort used to have a big problem with giveaways in his first few seasons as a regular in the NHL with the Kings. Has started to improve on that though it looks like. Yikes! 17 giveaways in 8 games in the 2020/21 playoffs.

  • Jess changed the title to Derek Forbort | #27 | LD

Forbort, 32, signed a one-year $1.5 million contract with Vancouver on July 1st. Due to multiple injuries and some healthy scratches, Forbort only played 35 regular season and three playoff games last season. The former Boston Bruin defenceman failed to score but tallied four assists and finished with a plus-eight rating. But the big brute of a defenceman is certainly known for his work in his own end of the ice. Forbort finished second on the Bruins in average penalty kill time on ice per game (3:00), 46th in the league for hits/60 (5.68) and 36th in blocked shots/60 (6.26).

So is it safe to assume that #6 spot is occupied by who is playing best between forbort and Juulsen assuming the d group is fully healthy?
